Well, over the last two weeks, seems like a few of the Big Lots stores here in the St. Louis area got a nice sized Sony restock, including a lot of the same titles listed (Batman serials, Steamboy, Freedomland - new one to the stock, along with the Escapist). As for anime....nothing new in quite awhile, plus my anime cache store got raided pretty good, so there's HARDLY anything left at ANY of the stores now.

This Saturday, I hit Hannibal, MO & Quincy, IL, and then next Monday or Tuesday, I'll be hitting a few of the Kansas City area stores. I'll update when I return from those trips.

Anyways, it bothers me when I see that. Once I bought a $2.00 DVD that was stolen lol.

Hit my three BL stores this morning and they've all restocked more of the same Columbia-Tri Star titles we've been seeing. Additionally, the Brooklyn Center store has a bunch of Mill Creek 20 & 50 movie packs and 4-disc television boxes. I was surprised to see the fairly new Cisco Kid, Ultimate Pirates and Hitchcock boxes. I also saw three of the 4-disc Very Best of One Step Beyond sets. The four discers were all $6 each. For some reason the Brklyn Ctr store is the only one I've see to feature these in stock.

Hey folks, just picked up a bunch of 20% off your entire Big Lots purchase in my Bay Area California Big Lots. These coupons are only good for Sunday Feb 24 2008 during special hours for Friends and Family Night. The special hours are 6 pm- 9 pm (until 10 pm for stores that close at 7pm or 8 pm). I don't know if this special sale is nation wide, so go ahead and call or visit your local Big Lots to ask about it. The coupons I picked up at the cash register at the Big Lots store were Xerox copies already cut to size stating 20% off for the special Friends and Family Sale on the evening of Feb 24. I sure hope the DVD inventory improves between today and Sunday because all they have on the shelves are the kiddie DVDs that have been flooding into the Bay Area stores.

Might be a nationwide deal - I got a similar coupon this week as well.

DVDmaniac14 02-20-08 07:12 AM

does anyone know what version of steamboy is at Big Lots...been really wanting to get this movie...and was wondering if it was the director's cut or just the reg edition?

also if anyone has that 20% off coupon i would LOVE to get a scan of it :-D

HOSALE 02-20-08 09:03 AM

The Steamboy DVD is the Directors Cut (anamorphic widescreen) and includes an exclusive Otomo illustration. It sells for $3 in the Bay Area Big Lots.

I've attempted to post an image/scan of the coupon below. I'm new at this so let me know if it works or not.

Steamboy is practically available all over the US, just like the rest of the Sony stock. You'll find it. :)

I've checked 6 Big Lots stores near me, and I have yet to see it, so it can't be that easy to find.

The Valeyard 02-21-08 12:42 AM

I FINALLY found a copy of Steamboy at one of my local Big Lots on Monday. This title has been eluding me for awhile.

basaro 02-21-08 10:08 AM

One of my local stores finally had some restock, but nothing to get excited about.
No new anime.
Some restock of Mill Creek stuff, Hitchcock, etc.

And a huge NEW cardboard bin loaded with the same old Sony assortment, but only maybe twenty or thirty titles, just many copies of each title. The bin was spring/easter colors, light blue I think, and said "Spring into savings on DVD Entertainment" or something like that.

They all sported fancy new Big Lots price stickers. They are square and white with the Big Lots! logo, UPC, and $3 price on them. Pretty spiffy! ;)

No copies of Steamboy either :( , but last week I was still seeing them among the leftover stock at a couple of the stores. I think the one closest to me still has the copy I returned over a month ago.

EDIT: 3 of 4 stores I went to yesterday had the new cardboard bin. Titles did vary among the stores, but there were a few titles that I hadn't seen before, even though they may have been spotted in other areas before:

Gunslinger's Revenge
Hustle And Heat
Dead Birds
Crimson Rivers - Angels of the Apocalypse (Special Edition)

I will gladly pick you up a copy of Steamboy (or Zentrix Vol. 1) if you can find another Vol. 1 of the Anime Legends s-CRY-ed. :)

Can anyone use this or do you have to have an associate's name/location?

"And a huge NEW cardboard bin loaded with the same old Sony assortment, but only maybe twenty or thirty titles, just many copies of each title. The bin was spring/easter colors, light blue I think, and said "Spring into savings on DVD" or something like that."

This was also at my nearest BL yesterday.

printerati 02-22-08 10:16 AM

I should also note that one of my local stores just received stock from a "drugstore buyout" (Eckerd) that contains some DVDs. These showed up in Eckerd-specific racks surrounded by disposable razors and shaving cream, not in the DVD/software racks. Most are priced between $4.99 and $9.99, plus an additional 20% off. This store had Roman Holiday, City Slickers, and various Saturday Night Live: Best Of discs at $7.99 after the discount, which isn't a deal at all. I imagine title selection will vary wildly among stores.

I didn't see any Memento either, but 1 of the stores had a bunch of Batman in the box with the other stuff. At least 10 copies.

And...
Anyone seen Heights? Any good, is it anamorphic?

HOSALE 02-22-08 01:02 PM

We bought and watched Heights last week. It is very good, superb cast, well written with a lot of shocks and twists and turns in the plot. I like these movies, where 5 different people discover they have something in common with each other as the plot moves forward. Its well filmed, very New Yorkish (ie the cult of Manhattan) and worth the 98 minutes of show time. I do not believe it is anamorphic, the back of the DVD cover simply indicates it is 1.78:1 Widescreen, as opposed to stating anamorphic widescreen as most DVDs do. We enjoyed the film and because of the twists and turns, it will probably rate another watching, now that we understand the connectivity of everyone, simply to enjoy the movie without the underlying questions of what the ties are to everyone.

DVDmaniac14 02-22-08 01:04 PM

think ill use this coupon to grab some of the shelves at my local big lots for cheap :-D thanks!

It is anamorphic.

Unfortunately, CTHE is one of the studios that didn't always accurately list that info on the back cover.

lolitazz 02-22-08 04:54 PM

The bin is not at every store. It is usually in those stores where they run ahead of schedule.

Besides the titles mentioned (I didn't see Ali, but saw the rest)

1 lonely copy of Batman
The Brothers
A league of their own
My Girl 2

I'd love to get my hands on Steamboy and Zentrix Volume 1, and I'd gladly make the trade with you if I could find another copy of S-Cry-Ed Anime Legends Vol. 1. I've only ever seen the one copy that I snagged for myself a little while back, but if I come across another one, we'll talk.

Sounds good...I've seen both within the last week. I'm also looking for Planetes Vol. 1.

I also saw the "Spring Into Savings..." bin today. All of the titles listed above, along with Wild Things 2.

1) I have "The Woods" and thought it was very good. Not sure why it didn't get a lot of press/good reviews. Creepy but not outright scary.

2) I like Anime but absolutely despised Steamboy. Hated every cell of it. It is one of the very few (literally 1 out of 1000+) DVDs I simply could not watch through the end. I find it a 100% bore..

just my opinion.

Agree with the review on 'The Woods'. It has a great atmosphere and is very effective in being creepy. Definitely deserved a greater audience - somehow it didn't end well. Which is the problem with most movies with a good premise.

DTStratovarius 02-25-08 04:19 PM

Meanwhile, during my trip to the Kansas City area, hit 3 or so Big Lots here (Shawnee, Overland Park, Olathe), and the Overland Park store had some anime, but nothing that I wanted or is on my want list. Shawnee didn't have much, other than that Sony Easter bin shipper. Meanwhile, Olathe had some decent anime selection, but yet again, no luck for me (saw plenty enough of the Vol. 3 2-disc Anime Legends version of "s-CRY-ed").

UPDATE: Well, wasn't able to hit any of the 3 planned Big Lots I planned to hit Tuesday, due to my girlfriend taking ages in the two Half-Price Books stores we hit in Lawrence, KS & downtown KC (and we had to get the rental car back at a certain time or face a per hour fine). However, given my luck when she's with me hitting Big Lots, it's not a very good sign if I would've found anything.

I especially liked the Lesley Gore songs in that movie. I actually bought one of her cds after watching the movie; too bad I can't get the movie version of "You Dont Own Me"

One of our local stores finally got this $3.00 "Spring" Sony display (as it so happened it was the store which hadn't had any new DVD stock since Black Friday!!). There were two layers of DVDs in the bin and multiple copies of all titles.

On Saturday, I picked up:

Batman: The Complete 1943 Movie Serial Collection
Body Double: Special Edition
Casualties Of War: Extended Cut
Freedomland
A League Of Their Own: Special Edition (2-disc)
Meltdown
Old Gringo (I'd been looking for this title to show up somewhere ever since it had been pictured in the Big Lots Black Friday ad)
The Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada

Another store I had checked this past Tuesday had a smaller restock of Sony titles, with nothing I didn't already have.

That store also had a few of the titles which have been showing up at Dollar Tree stores.

I remember seeing Cronicas and Corneil & Bernie: The Complete First Season (3-disc set).

Big Lots had them priced at $4.00 each (whereas Dollar Tree had been selling them for $1.00).

Biglesworth23 03-02-08 01:14 PM

I bought a few movies at the Frackville, PA Big Lots in the new spring box the other day. The only movie I got that I haven't seen others mention was a Philadelphia (Tom Hanks) 2 disc special edition for $3. They only had one of 'em.

Checked mine out today and got:

Ali: Director's Cut
Blue Thunder SE
Body Double: SE
Charlie's Angels: Deluxe Superbit
The Passenger (Jack Nicholson in an Antonioni film)
xXx:Uncensored Unrated 2-Disc Director's Cut

All for $3 a piece.

I have still never seen the 1943 Batman set, but I'm sure it will turn up eventually.

Thanks.

Good luck finding Vol.1, it's pretty elusive. There are at least 2 others here that are still looking for it.
I did however see Vol.2 and 3 again today, they're pretty common around here. Email me and maybe we can work out another trade :)
