Just an FYI to those comments about Big Lots receipts. They do have a new system coming with normal thermal receipts that give more information. Granted, they still will not give the DVD title because they scan generic UPC's, but you can tell the DVD distributor. For instance, my receipt says "DVD VIDEO SONY ASST #1". The non-DVD items on my receipt were very detailed with the product description because they scanned the actual product UPC. One of the Big Lots in my area has this, but they said it is coming everywhere soon...

Yeah, they have the new system in all the stores around NH now:

Hi Folks, can anyone recommend specific Big Lots locations in PA or NJ that they had good luck with? I've been to a few around me and can't seem to find any that had a decent movie selection.

Thanks in advance.

I've had stores tell me "the truck" comes either Friday or Monday. I guess it's truly YMMV.

As I said in the very post you quoted of me, I didn't doubt you at all, and only gave a reason why I'd doubt anyone who I wasn't familiar with as I am with you. Great job on the pics.

They don't have a trend, they arrive whenever, at different times in different stores, sometimes days/weeks apart. I would go Saturday morning since you'll be ahead of the weekend buyers. Best way to know is actually this board.

I know the just got a bunch of merchandise (a lot!) but no DVDs yet.

Nice bunch of movies for $3.00 each!

I've hit 7 different Big/Lots, and found something to pick up at all but one.

Where in socal are you finding these juicy big lots. Ive never found much at the big lots around me (north OC). Any DVD talkers got a lead on decent big lots in north oc or south LA county?

CaseyB 02-08-08 10:16 PM

I noticed a lot of new ones today....El Matador, Murderball and some others I was looking forward to for $4 each....then I noticed they were the previously viewed DVDs....so I didn't buy them.

printerati 02-08-08 10:46 PM

I did spot one title that I hadn't seen before, Mamoru Oshii's The Red Spectacles. It's a Bandai title, so it's conceivable that it got mixed in with the anime blowout...but it also has an old Media Play price tag on it, which I've never seen on any other title there. I'm wondering if someone just slapped a Big Lots sticker on it (kind of like that guy who threw Heroes in the toilet ;)) and returned it to get $3 back. If so, he probably even made money on it; I spent less than $3 on several titles during Media Play's final days.

The Valeyard 02-08-08 11:26 PM

I hit a couple of new Big Lots in the Alhambra to Monrovia area (in SoCal). The most exciting find was a ton of Sony Wonder/Classic Media titles including:

The Best of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Vol. 1
The Best of Boris and Natasha, Vol. 1
The Best of Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Vol. 1
The Best of Dudley Do-Right, Vol. 1
Casper - A Spirited Beginning
Casper's Spookiest Tales
The Best of Little Lulu - Vol. 1

And a TON of Seasame Street/Elmo titles.

They were all 4 bucks each.

No, I've seen it in at least two stores (bought it from one just because, actually)

I've also seen The Red Spectacles for $3.00 at Dollar General mixed in with the Bandai anime titles they carry (I bought one there last year).

Be warned that The Red Spectacles is not really an action movie as the box artwork suggests - it's more like a Japanese David Lynch movie - strange and surreal, a bizarre hybrid of several genres.

My brother hated it but I kinda liked it - I guess I have a greater tolerance for the avant-garde.

basaro 02-09-08 02:17 AM

Have also seen The Red Spectacles among the Bandai anime assortments, just forgot to mention it before ;)

It has an orwellian feel to it, and coincidentally I just watched it tonight. It's the first part of a trilogy which Oshii made, it seems to be an homage or satire of a bunch of different styles, I will have to watch it again before I take it all in.

CaseyB 02-09-08 01:07 PM

Xage...I'm sorry...but still not sold on you getting the Heroes set from Big Lots for $3. If you put it in the toilet and took a crap on it that would seal the deal and you'd be the man! -poke- :)

lol, that would be funny and disgusting at the same time. made me giggle.

DeepSleep 02-09-08 02:39 PM

Here are the ones I saw from Columbia/Tristar/Sony Pictures. They were all $3.00 each. They must have just re-stocked, since they were all neatly shelved.

Closer - Superbit
Pulse
Peep Show
Bottoms Up
The Escapist
Final Fantasy-The Spirit Within - Special Edition 2 Disc
Striking Range
Out of Reach
Dean Martin Double Feature - Who was that Lady? and How to save a marriage. Both remastered in high definition
Batman - The 1943 serial collection 2 disc
Freedomland
The Order
The Lords of Flatbush
Where the Truth Lies - Unrated Theatrical Edition
Blue Thunder SE
Heights

docdoowop 02-09-08 04:36 PM

If you run across "Beautiful Country" from Sony Pictures Classics, grab it. I just finished watching it and was very moved. Nick Nolte's appearance is limited to the final twenty minutes or so, but he's just top-shelf. Best $3 I ever spent.

Liontamer 02-10-08 01:38 AM

I went to two stores today (one of which must have had a major restock), and was able to get a pretty good haul. I even managed to find one copy of Vol. 1 of the S-Cry-Ed 3 volume edition, completing my set for a total of $8 + tax. I still can't find Zentrix Season One though; is it still popping up anywhere? Other than that I was able to find:

Mars Daybreak Vol. 1-6
Capote/In Cold Blood Double Feature
Yukikaze Vol. 1-3 (volumes 2 & 3 are the 2-disc versions)
Gundam Seed Movie II & III

The Zentrix Season One set is about the only thing left that I'd like to find (other than maybe the Batman serials one) since I got the Season Two last week. I might go back and get the Fantastic Children volumes if I spot the lone missing one from those two stores, Vol. 3, somewhere. Thanks for the heads up on the good selection at Big Lots!

Raw_and_Vital 02-10-08 11:32 AM

Didn't see anything at the pittsburgh,pa BigLots store except for "The Squid and the Whale" for 3 dollars. I'm going to check the store in my hometown today... I will post my finds!

I saw it within the past three weeks here. I bought both volumes as a Christmas present for one of my nephews, but have no interest in owning it myself.

Kraagh 02-11-08 12:35 AM

Liontamer, I don't know where you are located but, I just saw Zentrix Season One at the Knoxville Big Lots on N. Broadway. This was Friday.

Thanks for letting me know it's still out there. Unfortunately, I'm in upstate SC though.

I went to the store by century III behind the mall and say many copies of Squid and the whale. I took a trip to Belle Vernon yesterday and they had tons of them there as well along with some other titles... Kiss Kiss bang bang was another one I saw.

I did see at another store, "The Profiler season 4" for 14 bucks. sells for 89 on bestbuy.... I suppose this is a good deal?

Yeah, it took a lot of looking, but I did eventually find one copy between the 5 stores I've been to in the last month.

Is the 3 a typo? Does it look like this?

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...KL._SS500_.jpg

basaro 02-14-08 07:54 AM

^
Not really a typo, I know it's confusing, I was going to clear it up yet again ;)

On the security seal sticker on the top of the case it says:
"S-Cry-Ed 3 Volume 1" or something to that effect meaning it is the S-Cry-Ed 3 Volume version, of which each volume (Anime Legends 1-3) contains 2 of the regular 6 volume releases.

Confusing enough? :D

...
Still no new stock in NH for 3 straight weeks :(

I belive it says, "S-Cry-Ed 3 Volume Edition Vol. 1" on the sitcker, indicating (as you said) that it is volume 1 of 3.

HOSALE 02-15-08 06:17 PM

Hey folks,
Here's what's new in Big Lots in the Bay Area, California. I visited three of the stores in our area this Friday to beat the weekend rush and see what the new offerings would be. The sad news is that the wonderful Anime series seem to have run their course here. There were NO new anime offerings. This weeks offerings were very heavy on the kids fare. Four or five different Sesame Street DVDs, I picked up CinderElmo for $4 for the kids. In addition, here's what I picked up and noted was new in all of the stores I visited today:

The Best of Rocky and Bullwinkle Vol 1
The Best of Boris and Natasha Vol 1
The Best of Dudley Do-Right Vol 1
The Best of Peabody & Sherman Vol 1
Baby Genius: A trip to the San Diego Zoo

They had several other Baby Genius, quite a few Casper DVDs, Best of collections for Little Lulu. Like a say, a good day to pick up stuff for the little ones.

I also scored "Monty Python's And Now For Something Completely Different", but that was a remainder from previous shipments. All the above DVDs were $4.

Here's hoping for a resumption of Anime or Adult fare in the coming months. God bless and happy hunting.

darkhawk 02-15-08 06:18 PM

For $3, I found Angels Over Broadway starring Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Rita Hayworth from 1940. Also found the tin of Yu-Gi-Oh! Season 1 for $13

BobO'Link 02-16-08 07:49 AM

...and mine *still* has the same 30 or so left-overs from the past 6 weeks... :(

laidbacklarkin 02-16-08 09:31 AM

Came home with Van Demme's 'Wake of Death' for weekend viewing of guilty pleasure. You wouldn't believe this - someone had so neatly sliced through the length of the case and removed the disc from inside while preserving the shrink wrap.

This is the sort of thing that always makes me avoid stores like Big Lots, Walmart and their likes - inviting society's dregs and giving them all the 'encouragement' to make away with merchandise. To top it all, I have to drive to ghetto areas. Fcuk it, no more Big Lots - I feel like I have contracted some disease when I am there.

Alan Smithee 02-16-08 11:44 AM

How desperate does someone have to be to steal a $3 disc???

laidbacklarkin 02-16-08 11:49 AM

I also did see plenty of the "Best of" volumes. Decided not to buy. I could NEVER understand why "Best of" volumes would be released. Wouldn't season sets work better. If you're a fan of the series, I'd figure season set buys would be the way to go. Watching episodes in chronological order seems to be much more satisfying.

Didn't buy and just figured those available episodes would show up on season sets.

HOSALE 02-16-08 04:19 PM

I regard the Best of Volumes as samplers for the uncommitted or just cheap alternatives for the kids. I'm not a big Rocky and Bullwinkle fan, although I did grow up with the cartoons. These samplers are a great way to expose my little ones to the cartoons without a major investment on my part. I agree that true fans of the series wouldn't be satisfied with just a taste, when the whole meal is available.

I would like to point out however that quite a few of "The Best Of " series that I listed included episodes that have not yet been released, (ie episodes from the not yet released Volume 4 of Rocky and Bullwinkle for example), so die hard fans that can't wait, or in the event that sales are so slow that the studio fails to complete the entire series, would have an opportunity to buy episodes they are missing.

EarlB 02-16-08 04:27 PM

[I could NEVER understand why "Best of" volumes would be released. Wouldn't season sets work better. If you're a fan of the series, I'd figure season set buys would be the way to go. Watching episodes in chronological order seems to be much more satisfying.]

I've got the Best Ofs for Rocky & Bullwinkle and Boris & Natasha and, except for one story of the R&B disc, these don't appear anywhere else ... and sadly, probably never will.

From what I've read, many episodes in the already-released season sets have been "juggled" a bit (like introducing Dudley Do-Right earlier in the mix than he was originally, etc) and Classic Media finds themselves with episodes featuring Dudleys, Peabodys, Fractured Fairy Tales and the like that they've already used. Perhaps they're trying to avoid the expected "I've already got this" complaints (though why they didn't think anyone would complain over their watermark is anyone's guess).

As a long-time fan, I'm pretty bummed that season sets seem to have gone the way of the Dodo, but at least I can still get previously-unreleased stories (BTW: Classic Media, there are still more. Let's have 'em).

While I prefer the full season sets (and like others am frustratedly awaiting Season 4), at the *right* price (~$4 at BL would do) I might purchase a couple of the "best ofs" for no other reason than to get a quick fix on a single character or get a few of those eps. that are not yet on DVD. BUT the full season sets have been as low as $12 each with far more content, so...
