Just checked out the DC store, which closes today. Virtually no DVDs left and a few CDs. CDs and DVDs were $1 each. I did find 8 CDs that looked interesting enough to buy for $1.

Dallas, TX Tower closes tomorrow (Thursday). CDs/DVDs/vinyl were 80% off today with singles 90% and rap $1. The selection is very thin - 3 or 4 racks of DVDs and a rapidly dwindling selection of CDs. I didn't see much of interest.

Pasadena, CA closed down at 2pm on Wednesday.

Monterey Park is at 80% for CDs and DVDs. It closes for good on Thursday. They don't have much left. I did pick up the Korean flick "Memories of Murder" for $5.

Went to Tower Uptown (66th & Broadway) and was told today was the last day. I picked up a couple of CD's, but except for some bad direct-to-dvd tv movies, the store was picked clean.

I've been wanting to go to my local Tower for a while and I just happened to stop by it today and saw a "last day, 90% off" sign. There was a reasonable amount of ok stuff, some horror and TV box sets too. Even a movie I rented last week and thought was pretty good.

Instead of 90% off it was $1 for any DVD or CD so I spent $40 and the receipt showed I saved $780. I have a big bag full of stuff now.

Was this the one at Stonestown?

I was there today, and they only had 80% off.

I got lucky though, since I kind of know one of the employees there. I had 14 cd's and he only charged me $1.50 for 6 of them, and gave me the rest for free.

Today the Tustin store had buy any 4 CDs for $1 get the 5th for 1 penny, yesterday I bought $900 worth of CDs and DVDs for $150 at the Brea store. I was surprised I was still able to find a few gems I would have never paid Tower prices for, mostly imports. I looked through every section, I found a lot of the CDs that I bought mixed into the rap and latin areas. I don't know if they were put there intentionally for later % mark downs or not.

I'll miss Tower, especially their music DVD section (one of the best besides Amoeba's), this truly is an end of an era. I never thought I'd see the day and I'll go kicking and screaming to digital downloads. There's just something about being able to touch and read the booklet that makes owning music more enjoyable to me. Digital downloads just seem so cold, that's not to say that the music isn't the most important part, it's just different to me.

I was at the Burlington, MA location last thursday, and it was pretty pathetic. Lots of stuff that had been brought in from liquidators, and very little product that was worth buying, even at 70% off. I left empty handed.

I was there Tuesday and it was even worse. How bad does crap have to be that it's not worth it at 80-90% off??

Store closing date post updated. The end is definitely near - go to your local store now unless it is already closed.

Aiea , HI / 98-199 Kamehameha Hwy. Unit F-1 --
I haven't been out to Pearlridge in a while but the Star Bulletin said the Aiea Tower closed 2 days before the other two, on the 15th. So unless somebody no knows better, I think you can bump that one down to the Closed list.

Just got back from the Greenwich Village (NYC) store, which is closing tomorrow.
All DVDs are 90% off. It's a great opportunity to see all the crap that we normally never hear about. No-name performers in movies that never were released except to these strange labels that aren't even as enticing as Delta or Alpha or Platinum.

So long, Tower - it was great knowin' you.

In my third and final visit during the going out of business sale, I went to the Philadelphia Broad Street store with 8 days left before closing (as it turned out, just 6 days, I guess). I bought $40 worth of CDs and DVDs ("You save $85"). Besides that, there was nothing left I was interested in, unless maybe it had been $1. But it was still just 60% off DVDs and 70% of CDs.

I'll miss Tower. I'm sure I spent several thousand dollars over the years there, and I have great memories of the Tower stores in Philadelphia and in the SF Bay Area. Sad to see it go.

Imagine what it would take to put Amazon out of business. Maybe when music and movies are downloaded directly into our heads and the Internet becoems unnecessary.

Now back to going broke via Buy.com and the Google checkout.

Went to the Lincoln Center (NYC) location tonight at 6pm and they announced over the loudspeaker that they were closing at 7pm for the last time. DVDs were $1.50, CDs were $1. Slim pickings indeed. One major find though-- the terrific bowling doc "League of Ordinary Gentlemen", which I had bought (at 60% off) last week. Bought another copy to give as a Christmas gift.

Looks like the fat lady has pretty much sang in New York for Tower.

I stopped by the NoHo NYC Tower Thurs. night and everything is now 90% off. The dregs are left, I never would have guessed that anyone would stock so many obscure DVDs in hopes of selling them at anything near retail. May be a reason for their demise. Their diminishing inventory of CDs contains some imports that would probably interest audiophiles.

Tower's closing was on the local news today. They first opened in New York in 1983.

Better said, their first NY Store opening was in 1983.

"Tower Records is a retail music chain based in Sacramento, California. Tower was founded in 1960 by Russ Solomon in Sacramento, California. The store was named after his father's drugstore, which shared a building and name with the Tower Theater[1], where Solomon first started selling records."
