For me, that would be Open Range. But yes, 'West' is an amazing film.

You only picked 3 free titles?

Does anyone recommand THE LAST TYCOON as blind buy?

I recently watched "street car name desire" and "east of eden" for first time. Elia Kazan was absolutely ahead of his time. I am sure THE LAST TYCOON is not up to these two but is it good?

As a side comment, what I always find amazing about these sales is that many people are ordering so many "staple" titles (in my opinion) that I bought ages ago at higher prices (for instance, the 4 Jack Ryan movies, Truman Show, Untouchables, Italian Job to name a few). After I had learned my first lesson and reduced my max catalog DVD price to $6, when I saw these titles hit $5 + tax, I figured it was time to buy. I got lots of these at Walmart for $4.88 + tax or at other DDD sales in the $4.80 to $6 range. Now I'm down $2-$3 per title and I bought dozens of them. It's not a big deal as the money lost is about a full tank of gas. I'm just amazed how so many people knew to pass on all these good titles when they were in the $4.88 to $6 range because they'd eventually be in the $3 to $4 range, but I wasn't smart enough to know that would happen. I always congratulate the people who know how to play this game right. Perhaps I should take this as another lesson and pass on any future Walmart $4.88 bins knowing the DVDs be $3-$4 at DDD in a year, or is this a one-time event?

I don't know about everyone else, but for me it wasn't/isn't special forsight about what will drop in price but lack of funds/OOS when they were at WM or others. My general luck is that 25% of what I purchase thinking "This is a limited market item" or "Better get this one while it's available" type thing turn up in one of these sales or the WM dump bin and are in print several years beyond what I expect. At least 25% of my general "wish list" typically goes OOP before I make the purchase simply because I guessed wrong about what would be available later. As far as price, my general rule-of-thumb is if I want it, the price is below $6 total (tax, shipping, etc.), and the funds are available, I'll get it.

And, of course, the other response is that many of us will pay the full (but discounted) new release price for ones we're really excited about and will wait around on many others for the possibility of truly bargain prices. And, in the end, a difference of a few $$ for true bargain titles near the end of in-print status is more a matter of luck than anything else. In any case, you offered thoughtful comments, Manzana.

Manzana 10-06-06 11:59 AM

Thanks for those comments, BobO'Link and inDefiance. I was curious to hear if it was luck or people had a strategy that works better than mine. I do stick to the $6 rule pretty tightly, and I rarely buy new releases (Little Mermaid, Simpsons S8, Three's Company S8 are my only new releases for the last 3 months). I find my biggest dilemma are those $4.88 Walmart sales. They are usually pretty good prices, but more than a few times the same titles go down into the $3-$4 range, especially at DDD or Fry's. For me there is no issue about having funds available (I'm a single lonely guy), so it's a matter of when to pull the trigger, and I'm bad at predicting the future.

In today's Fry's ad, 3 of my most recent (unopened) Walmart $4.88 DVDs are now $3.99. That's very little money, but if I happen to go by either store I'll see if I can get it for $3.99 and return the $4.88 ones within the 90 day window. Sometimes it's barely worth the effort for a few dollars, and I think I must be doing it on "principle". Part of it is lingering resentment against the movie industry having paid so much for laserdiscs in the old days. Now I look back and say "what was I thinking then"?

Don't be mad at the the movie industry. It wasn't like it was their plan to keep you down. The price was dictated by our good friends Supply and Demand, and they were out to maximize profit, like they still are now.

The market for DVD keeps changing so looking at things in hinesight is only going to drive you crazy. I am sure there will be a time when used DVDs will sell for 1.00 a piece.

even with the 4.88 films I have gotten some lower like in this sale and there was a buy 1 get one free sale last year were all the prices started at 5.99 for only a couple of days which I got lucky and scored about 40 movies at 3.oo a pop over a year ago!

Basically you are going to win some, you are going to lose some. just get films you like or are interested in and you come out ahead.

I think of it as I get 4 4.88 movies at Walmart for 20.00 if how much would it cost to see them in a theatre? Even with new formats DVDs still will have value to me similar to a good book sitting on my shelf. Plus i would be very surprised if ALL the movies I have now will be remade into HD or BlueRAY. The big blockbusters will of course but all the quirky, less popular movies I just dont see it.

So just buy your DVDs at what YOU think they are worth enjoy them and dont look back!

the problem with manzana is that he's a glass half empty type of guy so if you read his posts enough, he thinks he's getting the short end of the stick all the time.

This was discussed up-thread. Apparently, the AMEX coupon can't be used in conjunction with sales, hence the missing box.

lxl 10-06-06 03:37 PM

finally got The Godfather 1 & 2 :D

Wouldn't he be a "glass is half empty" kind of guy?

animatedude 10-06-06 04:27 PM

Well, at least one poster up thread said it worked for him, and the ensuing posts indicated that you just needed to log in log out (unless I missed something...?)

Not trying to beat a dead horse, just seeing if it died, or if it's currently just a few of us who are having problems....

You're right. Must have missed that one. Post in here if you CAN get it to work. I couldn't get the box to open even after I logged out and back in again.

Yeah, I tried it as well. Had $60+ in basket(non-b1g1) & discount was working. Added 2 titles from sale & extra discount poofed - even for just the non-sale items.
