Shouldn't you be able to say to amazon customer service that you have an online invoice that shows that the amount to be charged to your card is $14.99 (.75 if you used A9), and be within your rights to cancel the order/return the order for a refund without paying for return S&H costs (although, if they charge me for both items, I may still return the items on my dime...beats spending $30 when I would just as soon have spent $0.00 dollars).

My total, first off was $31.98, which wasn't even the ADVERTISED deal (!)....
And second, yeah, I went ahead and told Amazon CS that I had multiple records (even their own site in order status! nevermind my order confirmation email..) that said my Grand Total was "14.99"

We'll see what they say tomorrow...

This is the amount according to your credit card records, or are online Amazon records changing? Thanks.

Even on my Amazon.com Order Status page, it still lists:

Total Before Tax: $14.99
Estimated Tax: $0.00
-----
Grand Total: $14.99

(though in truth, it does curiously say above that:
"Item(s) Subtotal: $31.98
Shipping & Handling: $0.00
Best Value Savings: $0.00
Best Value Savings: $0.00"
which contradicts my original order confirmation email, which lists "Best Value Savings" of 16.99)

That's strange. My order is still 'in process' and is not 'shipping soon' yet, but it does still indicate the correct order (see below). I just printed out the Amazon order status page in case they try any funny business with my order. It still shows:

Item(s) Subtotal: $31.98
Shipping & Handling: $3.97
Best Value Savings: $-16.99
Best Value Savings: $0.00
Super Saver Discount: $-3.97
-----
Total Before Tax: $14.99
Estimated Tax: $0.00
-----
Grand Total: $14.99

It showed up as $14.99 during the checkout process, but now when I look at the order on my account page, it's showing $37.97. Think I should go ahead and cancel?

My order status page still shows 16.30 after tax.

Is this dead? The combo with the CD is now Elton John - The Captain and the Kid. If you go to the DVD page the combo is with the REM CD, but it's 39.98. At no point during the checkout process does it get reduced. Maybe they fixed it?

Well, after their first pathetic CS attempt (which talked about shipping?! I didn't say I was charged shipping! That's the second time their CS department responded with an irrelevant issue to me...) I responded AGAIN on the subject and got this:

Thank you for writing to us at Amazon.com.

First, please allow me to extend my most sincere apologies for any
frustration this matter has caused. I would like to assure you that
I have reviewed all of the previous contact regarding this matter
and I see that our prior communications have not appropriately
addressed your concerns. I hope that I can be of some help.

I've investigated your order #[riiiiiiiight] and sorry to
inform you it was not the extra authorizations on your card. You
have been erroneously charged for the additional amount of $16.99.

To correct this error, I have requested a refund of $16.99 to
reimburse you for the amount you were erroneously charged.

This refund should be issued to your credit card within the next
2 to 3 business days. We will send you another e-mail to let you
know when it has been completed. You may also view refunds by
clicking the "Your Account" link at the top of our web site, then
clicking "Go!" next to "open and recently shipped orders."
Completed refunds appear at the bottom of an individual order's
summary page.

We are very sorry for any inconvenience that this situation may have
caused and would like to thank you for your understanding and
patience. Thank you for shopping at Amazon.com.

The phrasing is kind of funny (sorry to inform me it was not pre-authorization? huh? I guess when I said "pre-authorization" I should have said 'unposted,' but oh well) but there on my order status page it says:
Total: $18.99
Refund date: September 14, 2006
Refund Amount: $16.99
Refund date: September 14, 2006
- Payment method: Credit Card | Status: Processing
Refund Amount: $2.00

...So I may end up only paying 12.99. Weird.

Double charged as well

Same here -- charged independently for both items and it took two e-mails to Amazon as well.

Their first response was absolutely clueless and had very little to do with my original query (droning on about promo certificates). The second follows the logic of FangsFirst's reply from Amazon, but I was credited the $16.99 so that's all that matters (but not the additional $2 like FF).

(And I did receive the CD set today.)

My CDs should arrive today as well; I'll probably know tomorrow, though possibly monday, the full details of their refunding...

EDIT: Speak of the devil, only a few minutes later and a knock on the door...

I recieved this:

Greetings from Amazon.com.

We regret to inform you that an error caused the "And I Feel Fine:
Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 [COLLECTOR'S EDITION]" Audio CD and
the "R.E.M. - When the Light is Mine... The Best of the I.R.S. Years
1982-1987 Video Collection (2006)" DVD to be displayed at an incorrect
promotional price.

In accordance with our posted policies on pricing, we are unable to
offer these items for the incorrectly posted promotional
price. Therefore, we have cancelled your order for the items. Please
accept our apologies for the delay in our notification.

At any given time, despite our best efforts, a small number of the
millions of items on our site may be mispriced. We do, however, verify
prices as part of our shipping procedures. If we discover that an
item's correct price is higher than our stated price, we will, at our
discretion, either contact you for instructions before shipping or
cancel your order and notify you of such cancellation. This policy is
posted in the Help section and is accessible through numerous other
areas of our web site.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

We value your business and hope that you will give us a chance to
serve you again in the future.

Sincerely,

It looks like I will receive an e-mail after the fact...I went to check on my order and it no longer shows up in the "Where's My Stuff" section. My credit card was not charged, so the cancellation is not a big deal...gave the deal a shot, even though I suspected it would not be completed by Amazon. At least I do not have to deal with customer service and push for a refund.

If you are unhappy with the results you have gotten with this, email Jeff Bezos - [email protected]

He is the GM of Amazon.

Nothing to e-mail Bezos about. This was a clear price mistake, we took a shot, they have every right to cancel the orders. Of course, I don't like an order I legitimally placed just disappearing from the website as if it never happened. Kinda slimy.

But this happens all the time--there's a price mistake, some of us take a shot, some of us get it, some of us get canceled. Life goes on. I frankly didn't need these anyway, and likely won't buy them otherwise, so this saved me $15.

There is something to complain about. Never notifying me that it was cancelled is plenty of reason. I could have been sitting around for 2-3 weeks expecting it to come and never receive it. I just happened to look at my order online or I may have never known. Obviously they cover their ass with the price mistake, but not keeping us aware of what is going on, or shipping it in some cases and then changing the price, is not acceptable.
