Re: DVDs at Ross - Dress for Less!

Yesterday, tuesday, the Ross store on Market Street, San Francisco, had the Universal "Franchise Collection" titles, e.g. Bing Crosby, Carole Lombard, Rock Hudson, all for $6.99, but no Marlon Brando. And, the DeMille set, was the one from Universal with "Union Pacific." Seperately, the Marlon Brando Collection is available from inetvideo.com for $7.99. Tuesdays, is seniors (55 or older) discount day at Ross.

Re: DVDs at Ross - Dress for Less!

As I remember "How The West Was Won" box set was $5.99 last December, 2010, at least at the San Francisco Market Street store.

Re: DVDs at Ross - Dress for Less!

This was probably a total fluke, but picked up Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Collector's DVD Gift Set (with Gollum statue) for $9.99. A bit shocked to see it there, but keep your eyes out. And on a non-related note, they had a four-pack of cool Star Trek glasses for $7.99 in housewares.

Re: DVDs at Ross - Dress for Less!

The two Towers and Return of the King gift sets have been spotted at Ross since about Nov. of last year. I picked up a few for gifts before Christmas.

Re: DVDs at Ross - Dress for Less!

I've seen the LOTR sets with the statues or bookends for $9.99 at Ross more times than I can count. Since I already bought the EEs when they came out, I never could justify paying $9.99 for a statue or bookend to clutter up my already cluttered shelves.

I also saw the Bonnie & Clyde sets for $7.99, and at that price it's a bit debatable for me to buy a DVD (rather than BD) given that I thought it was just an OK movie but not a great one. At $4.99 it would be an easier choice. Seven is a good deal at $4.99 if you don't already have it (I got it for that price at BB many years ago).

I saw the How the West Was Won 3 disc set for $7.99, but the new packages are smaller and must be missing some of the extras from the fatter $5.99 set which I'm glad I got while it was there.

At least my Ross stores have gotten some new inventory since Christmas so the shelves aren't quite as bare, but still nothing I wanted to buy.

Re: DVDs at Ross - Dress for Less!

Stopped by today for the first time in a couple months. There were 2 Lombards: 1 @ $6.99 & 1 @ $9.99. They had moved the dvd rack from the front of the store to 1/2 way back & it was the emptiest I've ever seen it. Nothing worth mentioning other then the Lombards.

I picked up one of those Woodstock Ultimate Collector's sets for 20.99 at a Ross in Charlotte last night. Wow, that thing is huge and frakking cool as hell!

be warned: I got mine today. 2 of the discs were loose in the sealed case (though i did not hear floaters before I opened it), & there's a gouge in The Crusades. With Ross, you can always return it, but for those considering a mail order purchase it could be more problematic.

I don't blame the seller, it looks to me like it was a manufacturing issue with very poor case design.

Re: DVDs at Ross - Dress for Less!

I bought Demille from Newbury Comics on amazon a while ago and the case was a little damaged too. Unfortunately the hub was messed up on the case holding a disk. But i decided it wasn't worth sending back for the cheap price paid.

Re: DVDs at Ross - Dress for Less!

I checked the worst disc (Crusades) with Nero CD/DVD speed & it likely won't play (scored 46 out of 100). I've emailed the seller, see what happens.......

Re: DVDs at Ross - Dress for Less!

I've seen several of the Woodstock sets but no Wizard of Oz. I can't imagine what the packaging for Woodstock would look like had there not been the outer protective plastic case. Every one I saw was destroyed, one having coffee spilled all over it. I've held off buying it on principle, I am also irritated by the extra performances spread out over several exclusives, but I may have to bite soon....

If you buy Blu-rays, and you don't mind importing, the UK "Woodstock" release has all of the content from both of the U.S. exclusives, and is region-free. I don't like importing, but doing so was a must, in this case.

Re: DVDs at Ross - Dress for Less!

Is the UK DVD Region-Free though? That could be the only issue there, as DVDs tend not to be Region-Free, whereas Blu-rays often are.

I'll have to check for you, almost all my players are region free. Will post back.

Re: DVDs at Ross - Dress for Less!

The UK Woodstock 4 dvd set is NOT region free, however most cheap Philips players ($35 & under) can be easily made region free with a 4 digit handset code.
