Vu

After reading the DVDTalk review of the Ronin SE, I decided to pick up the cheaper version. Many of the newer SE's don't offer much improvement of their cheaper versions (Knight's Tale, Princess Bride and Ronin, to name a few). I always check out the SE additions before blindly upgrading.

Thanks all for the recommandations and cupon for the nice list ;)
Here's what I ordered:

DDMGD008501D HOTEL RWANDA 1 $6.98
DDMGD007379D WILD AT HEART 1 $6.98
DDMGD006976D JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG (SE) 1 $6.98
DDMGD004704D WINGS OF DESIRE-SPECIAL EDITIO 1 $6.98
DDMGD003426D THE LAST WALTZ (SPECIAL EDITION) 1 $6.98
DDPRD023074D THE CONVERSATION 1 $6.03

The list would have been much longer, but I already own a lot of the titles in this sale...

As happy as I am to see theis sale, I can't thelp but think that Sony is dumping inventory on MGM catalog titles, the way they dumped inventory on a lot of Sony catalog titles earlier this year (The Sony $5.98 sale still going on at DDD). I have this sinking feeling that once these titles are gone, Sony won't bring them back and instead will focus more on recent fare and we won't see new catalog titles taking their place.

I don't think that's what is happening.

I believe that all of these MGM DVDs are MSRP ~$15, and regularly sell for $9.00 and change at DDD.

Actually, last year around this time they had a sale with most of these MGM DVDs that was buy two, get one free, which put them in the $6.00 range.

I think thats EXACTLY what's happening. DVD Empire has just raised the MSRP on all MGM titles from $15 to $20.

Edited: Technically, they may not have raised the list price, however they are no longer discounting MGM titles, so something is afoot.

They will probably re-release the Mgm catalog titles in the format know as FULL SCREEN only, like Sony/Columbia did with alot of their titles in the past couple of years.

Jackson_Browne 08-14-06 10:08 PM

I really hope nothing is afoot here (although it does appear that something is up) because I don't want to have to spend another $50-$100 to get a bunch of titles that I decided could wait till later when I made my last order just because they are going out of print.

So you're saying that you think their supply is Running on Empty?

Thanks again.

I picked up The Last American Virgin from the last DDD 20% off sale and it is one of the most over looked 80s films ever. Better or at least on par with some of the Hughes movies. Most people don't know this, but it is actually a remake of an Israeli flick which came out around that time and both are really good movies.

Since this is Sony, there is always something afoot. It wouldn't surprise me if these are going OOS/OOP and I wouldn't doubt that Sony won't reprint them since they are trying to turn attention to their own proprietary format (ahem...Blu-Ray) so I doubt they will concentrate much on DVD now or if they do they'll mess them up and put them in FF. Now I'm going to spend a bunch since that's I'm sticking to my conspiracy theory and don't want to miss out. Really sucks that it is happening now though.

Kevin Phillips 08-16-06 08:54 PM

I ordered about 30 titles last night. :( It would have been more but I didn't want to buy any P&S or non-anamorphic titles.

I'm a little disappointed in the number of full-screen or non-anamorphic titles. On the other hand, I'm also kind of relieved, because it kept me from buying even more, and my wife is already going to be a little mad when she finds out what I've done...

Jackson_Browne 08-16-06 09:00 PM

Wait, would Sony really let almost the entire back catalogue for Woody Allen go out of print? We're talking titles like Annie Hall and Manhattan here as well as the more obscure stuff also in this sale. I'm not thinking this is going to happen.

I don't think Woody Allen films will ever go out of print (except for Everyone Says I Love You, which is now). But Sony is evil. They believe all dvd's should be 29.99, which is why you have to shell out big bucks for Manhattan Murder Mystery.

Also, their decision to produce Sweet And Lowdown in Fullscreen only from now on (also 29.99).

Who knows what they're going to do with the MGM stuff.

Quatermass 08-17-06 03:40 PM

I just got a shipping notice that my backordered Troll/Troll 2 dvd shipped today. It's not a Midnite Movie but I think it's a good sign that they are getting new stock.

kintnerboy 08-17-06 04:23 PM

I had 2 Midnite Movies ship today (Comedy of Terrors / Raven and Oblong Box / Scream And Scream Again).

However, The Burning Bed (Farrah Fawcett TV movie) is officially OOP....

Sean O'Hara 08-17-06 11:58 PM

I also had Comedy of Terrors/The Raven ship, but Masque of the Red Death/Premature Burial and Tomb of Ligeia/An Evening with Edgar Allen Poe are still on backorder. The other Poe films I ordered through DVD Planet's sale, and they all shipped.

I thought Fox was taking over for sony in the new distribution deal for mgm?

That could be it. Sony could just be purging all their MGM titles, which will all eventually be re-released by Fox. There may be quite a gap between the current DVD going OOP and the new one being released though.

Cameron 08-18-06 12:41 PM

Fox will be the new distribution for MGM....these titles (mostly) have all been around before even the sony buy out....i think its just a sale, no trickery ensues....they are just doing sell through pricing on old titles...to get those last bucks out of them.

as far as the midnite movies. To my knowledge only the single movies have gone OOP, all of the double features remain intact. Killer Klowns is one of the few titles that remains a stand alone (though i could have sworn i saw a double feature in a bargin bin last halloween)
