I notice a few have mentioned Michael Mann's THEIF - be warned : its a crappy non-anamorphic transfer - and not worth parting with your money

(until someone pulls their finger out and gets a Special Edition on this title !! come on.... he's got MIAMI VICE out at the moment........ then again..... THE KEEP has yet to appear as well !!)

Jtnguyen12 08-09-06 01:42 AM

Do not forget Terminator 2 (Extreme edition) for $4 at bestbuy this week ;)

SterlingBen 08-09-06 02:07 AM

I wouldn't pay 5 dollars for any of these (of course I have paid more for quite a few of them years ago)

JohnnyDrama2006 08-09-06 02:08 AM

As eldad9 mentioned, it's pretty simple and can be automated into a script or macro. I did it the quick and dirty way:
  • create a list of urls
  • use an app to download the pages
  • merge the pages into a single file
  • identify the dvd 'title' lines by some shared characteristic
  • cut/copy those lines into another file
  • do a little bit of cleanup: sentence case, alphabetizing, reformatting certain titles (eg, 'The Big Country' to 'Big Country, The), re-alphabetizing, etc.

I've found that dvdpricesearch.com often makes a good replacement interface for DDD, you can set it to filter a bunch of different ways, making it pretty easy to get a similar list from them. One benefit of using dvdpricesearch is that if DDD was sloppy and missed putting any titles on these special pages, dvdpricesearch will still find them.

JohnIan 08-09-06 05:40 AM

Thanks for the heads up NoirFan. I only picked up three titles. I have other box sets to pick up this month: "Veronica Mars: Season Two", "Surface: The Complete Series" and "Invasion: The Complete Series". Plus a few others.

Land That Time Forgot/People That Time Forgot
War Gods Of The Deep/At The Earth's Core
Lifeforce

It's odd, last week I was thinking about "The Land That Time Forgot". Did some searches. Read a rumor that the Sci-Fi channel was considering remaking it (please don't suck). And looked at various images. Ok, besides the obvious things in the image NOT in the movie, could someone please explain why is there a T-Rex underwater attacking the German sub?

Even at a cheap price, it's amazing how quickly it can add up .....

docdoowop 08-09-06 07:27 AM

I'm so freaking spoiled by $3.88, $3.99, $4.88 etc pricing. Going in for a few that have been on my want list. Does anybody have the skinny on "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World"? FF? WS? Special edition coming?

I think so. It's Kubrick's first movie and while it's not as good as The Killing, I do like it a lot. It's a good film noir and definitely worth the price.

The Void 08-09-06 08:43 AM

I think the only one I'm ordering from this sale is Killer's Kiss

Anyway, I picked up Best Years of Our Lives, The and Killing, The -wink-

I may go back and pick up a Pam Grier blackspolitation movie later. Any opinions on which one was her best?

I do not think you will be disappointed with Coffy. Very well written and well made drive in movie (actually well wrtiten and well made movie, period) and Pam Grier =

Very interesting commentary by director Jack Hill also.

Buy now!!!

I might fill up my Cronenberg and Carpenter collections here. I'll probably be in for Brood, Scanners, and The Fog. Possibly one other.

The disc is widescreen, released under its OAR. There are a decent amount of extras on the disc as well. I paid $15+ for this film when it first came out. IMO, the greatest comedy of ALL-TIME, and thus a no-brainer at this price. I haven't heard anything about a Special Edition, at least, not yet.

Which makes it all the more puzzling when a site like DDD fails to make navigation that easy.

Thanks for the post. I'm going to try to be good and only get a title or two...

bunnydojo 08-09-06 10:26 AM

Most of these are usually either $9.49 or $9.42, so this sale is bringing them to you cheaper than even the 20% off sale would. It's amazing, I found 6-10 titles that I was interested in, but said to myself I wasn't willing to pay over $5 each so I'm not getting anything. DDD has really spoiled me. :)

For what it's worth, 12 Angry Men, The Long Goodbye, The Manchurian Candidate, and The Killing are all probably in my top 20 favorite movies and are worth getting. Birdman of Alcatraz was very well-made, but I can't see myself watching more than once. I bought Thief from DDD a while back and was disappointed, despite liking Heat, The Insider, Collateral, and even Manhunter. In the Heat of the Night and House of Games (if you like Mamet) are great films as well.

DVDho78DTS 08-09-06 10:31 AM

Thanks for the heads-up!

I recommend 12 Angry Men. What a well acted and written film. The Killing is a fine film that has a dud for an ending.

Manzana 08-09-06 11:25 AM

I'll throw in my 2 cents here. While $6.98 is an OK deal, MGM titles have had 2 for $10 deals at CC (and occasionally at BBY), so $5 is my price point for a MGM DVD, but if there's something you really want to own now then it's probably worth paying an extra $2 than waiting for another MGM deal which you never know when it'll come.

Another word of warning on MGM. In the early days they weren't as good about doing anamorphic, so check if that's important to you. MGM also has (had) a tendency to use single layer over dual layer (i.e. lower bitrate to buyers and lower cost to them) or to put both widescreen and pan & scan/open matte on the same disc (resulting in the same lower bitrate), except on fairly recent releases. In my opinion, most of MGM's DVDs seem like budget titles (and are often skimpy on extras) that should go straight into the $4.88 bin when they're released.

"A list for the lazy"

Or, a list for those who don't want to spend all night thumbing through DDD's endless, slow loading pages.
many thanks, Cupon.

"Not only is it a pain in the ass to navigate, but who in the hell sorts by 'the' when sorting alphabetically... "

I totally agree, Paul. I've posted the same beef a while back but others defended the system. I guess we're in the minority.

yeldarb367 08-09-06 11:40 AM

My cart as of now, coming in just under $50.

BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ $ 6.98
NO MAN'S LAND $ 6.98
TOUCHING THE VOID $ 6.98
PATHS OF GLORY $ 6.98
THE KILLING $ 6.98
KILLER'S KISS $ 6.98
FRAILTY $6.18

I'm still debating a few others. Terminator, Theif, Graduate and some Altman and Allen films.

docdoowop 08-09-06 12:23 PM

For those looking for a good blind buy, I highly recommend "Kiss Me Deadly"...with Ralph Meeker as the best Mike Hammer ever. Plus the ending will blow you away! (When I first saw it I was reminded of the first time I saw Cagney's "White Heat".)

Cameron 08-09-06 12:41 PM

some sam peckinpah in there as well

the killer elite
bring me the head of alfredo garcia (GREAT FLICK)
junior bonner
straw dogs (i think the mgm copy may be FS only though)
jinxed (uncredited film, which i have never seen...might pick it up)
