I think I got mine slighty cheaper at Digital Eyes with one of their coupons.

I pre-ordered mine from Amazon for $124.01 after the A9 discount. Even without A9, I would still choose Amazon. They package box sets much better than the Infinity Resources three (DDD, DE, DVD Planet).

I already got the box set a few years ago, so I don't want to double dip just to get the series and the remake, neither of which I liked, but I hear it comes in a case that looks like one of the apes, so that's cool.

This new set has all five movies remastered in anamorphic widescreen, a first for 2-5. It also contains the Apes animated series, for what that's worth!

I know per movie this isn't a bad price, but it's too much to blow at once... I'll hope that the price eventually drops heavily, like the Matrix box sets...

But for those that don't want to wait that long, isn't the next DDD sale due in April? Or is that May? I forgot when they have been doing it...

If you don't care about the big Caesar ape-head packaging, or the TV series, or the animated series, and just want the movies with all new anamorphic transfers for 2-5, they are also issuing a new Legacy Edition box set for much less. Or individual titles if you don't want them all.

Press release with details, and a picture of the ape-head packaging for the Ultimate set:

prefer it without the head thing

I know some of you have said you like that Ape Head Thing ... or that it was cool. However, my preference would be to get the DVDs without that head. But, that is my preference for most / all sets. I did not get the neat porcelain figurines with my extended LOTR sets, and I didn't get the Neo bust with the Ultimate Matrix. I guess I just prefer the DVDs without the trinkets. It would be nice if they sold the Ultimate Ape collection without the head.

I'm not really sure what the ape head is for. Do the DVDs actually go in it? Because on the pictures it shows the ape head and then next to it is one of those case things that is apperently holding all 14 discs. Even if you don't want the ape head, you could always just ebay the ape head and keep the discs.

With the Alien Head packaging the head was actually the case. Also, this one actually seems to be limited to 10,000(theyre individually numbered), unlike the Matrix one which seems to be quite unlimited.

It looks like all mention of this set has been removed from DDD. The link goes to a blank page, and the set does not show up when you search for "Planet of the Apes" on DDD.com

It's available on Amazon.com for 125.99.

I wonder if it's worth it to just wait for inevitable hd-dvd or blue-ray release concerning this release. I am a huge apes fan, but don't want to keep buying the same thing three times since I already own the original apes set, tv show, 2 disc doc from image, original se and the remake. However if I find this set for under a $100, I may bite. It sure is tempting.

Heres hoping that you can get a set of 14 discs and not get a scratched one or six in the bunch. I had to exchange my Matrix set a few times and was still unable to get a copy of one of the discs without having scratches on it.

This set is going to include the cartoons also. I wasn't aware that they have been released yet.

Yes.

Well, if the picture showed the ape head with the discs inside, there would be posts from people wondering if it was just the head for that price or if the discs were hidden inside it somewhere. They had to take a picture of something.

Looks like the case of DVD's might fit inside the chest area directly under the head.

It might be like the original Battlestar Galactica video release.

The first ones came boxed inside the silver Cylon head. The later ones just had the box.

I enjoy these "prop" type offerings because I can display them on shelves in my home theatre. However, one I didnt like was the Leave It to Beaver lunchbox because the dvd set itself doesnt fit well with my other DVD's when removed from the lunchbox. It appears the apes case will also make an awkward fit.

Leave it to Beaver Lunchbox comments -- thumbs down!

Off topic but I felt the same way about the Leave it to Beaver special packaging: the actual disc storage unit is an awkward size and won't match the rest of the season sets. Packaging disappointment! It would have been better if Universal had simply included the "regular set" inside the special packaging.

The link is now working.

They also have the Legacy set posted for $36.59 here

Amazon has the Legacy set for $34.99 here

I might go for the Legacy set, but no way I'm getting that damn dirty ape head set.

Indeed it is.

People will be able to walk around, head in hand, and ask: "Would you like to touch my monkey?"

Are there any prices up for retail stores carrying it?

Bestbuy? Frys? Circuit City? Walmart? Target? Suncoast? Sam Goodys? Borders?
