I didn't know the Norwood store was already closed, but I don't frequent that area much these days. Hell, you can get shot in the McDonald's parking lot next door...not that I am against shooting McDonald's patrons.

I was tempted to just grab 7 dvds and find out, but I was short on time. So my question to the OP is the following: Did the 50% off discount show up automatically at the register? Also, were there any signs indicating that an additional 50% off would be taken?

I have not seen the additional 50% off mentioned in any way at two Cincinnati locations (Cincinnati Mills and Western Hills).
|
Media Play in Florence KY (greater Cincinnati area) only has DVDs for 20% off the MSRP. I found that funny since the "40 Year Old Virgin" sticker said something like $26.99 yet the Circuit City just down the street had it for $13.99.
By the way, you can pick up one of the season sets of Friends for close to $50 (per set)!! That's got to be the cheapest price anywhere!! (Note: Sarcasm). Media Play sucks (as far as prices are concerned) and has for quite some time. I, for one, am not surprised to see them go out of business. |

Next phase...
starts Wed. Stuff is supposed to be 40-60% off.

Media Play in Charlotte (Woodlawn) had everything from 30-50% off, with some items (such as the bargain books) being 60% off.
For people looking for cheap DVD storage racks/shelves, they have a pretty good selection. I was at the one in Matthews last week and spotted a few nice ones, but held off until the prices dropped a bit more. Both locations had a good variety of racks ranging anywhere from 75-300 capacity or so, at 30% off. I got a LaserLine that holds approx. 215 DVD's for 20 bucks plus tax. The floor model looked sturdy enough to sway me... As I figured, the store was full of browsers, but there weren't too many buyers. And whoever wrote the holiday song "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" must have lived in a time before automobiles. |
The Media Play near me has always had a decent selection of Criterions. If their DVDs start to drop to 40-50% off, I might pick up a few. I also saw the OOP "Almost Famous" Bootleg Edition, which I might grab too.

I went earlier this week and the majority of everything on sale was only 20% off, very few 50% off items. I was watching the news and they mentioned that the stores might have raised prices before the sale started so an investigation was going on. I went to bed before the story so I don't know all the facts.

Stopped into a Media Play last week, then again yesterday. NO bargains.
They moved everything to high retail then marked it to "their" discount (about 5% off) then posted 20% off (last week) then 30% off (this week) sale signs. Those dvd's won't even be a bargain when it gets to 50% off "lowest sticker" price. I hated Media Play then and do now. They won't get a dime of my money! Glad they went belly up! |
Most every K-mart closed last year and did the same thing...marked everything up to mfsr price (way more than anywhere else) and then gave a 30% discount. Everything was still cheaper everywhere else, but the morons were eating it up like it was pudding. Savvy customers like us deal hunters know the prices suck, but they catch the general public who dont shop around and dont shop online and end up getting more profit than they would have before the "sale" price.
My media play closed about 10 years ago...they used to be pretty good, but then again so did best buy. I remember when almost every cd in best buy was 9.99-10.99... |
Last week when I went into one of the two local Media Play stores, the huge signs said "20%-40% off everything" with "Limited Exclusions" in smaller print at the bottom. Looking through the store, the video games, PC software, electronics and storage were all at only 10%. I don't know about any of the other stores, but at this Media Play these items accounted for close to 1/4 of the store area, which was hardly "limited". Things have improved somewhat with the move to 30%-50% off, as PC software is now 30% off, but the signs are still misleading. One of the more pathetic overprices I've seen is on their 13 oz. bags of Christmas snack size Snickers candy bars. They sell in any normal store for around $2.99-$3.49, but at Media Play, they were marked at $5.99! Even with the discount, they come in at well over the normal price. The only decent things I found were the last Ultimate Matrix w/Neo bust for $28 (inc. tax) and a $.50 Christmas CD that I'm going to add to my sister's gifts. I have been looking for a week and a half to find something to spend a $5 Replay gift certificate and a trade-in gift card on and it's pretty sad that those two things were all that I found.

the best deals i've seen so far have been the posters, got one of the Twins from Matrix Reloaded for around $4
|
All DVDs and CDs were 30% off at my two stores yesterday and today. I spent $80 on CDs. I'm waiting for one more price drop before I start considering the DVDs.
30% off their DVD prices is about what you can get the same DVD for anywhere else. |

Thanks, Sade Sade, Used CDs and DVDs were only 30% off...and it was amazing how many Wal-Mart 5.50 titles they had for 13.99 USED. |
Our store's moved to 40-60% off ... snagged Dick Van Dyke Season 3, Heat SE, Black Hawk Down SE, Say Anything, The Fugitive, The Graduate, and Titus. Anyone know when the prices drop again? I've got my eye on some Shure earbuds there.

Our Media Play has most DVDs at 40% off, so I picked up some of the lower priced titles I have been looking for, such as the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes series, the (original) Dead Zone, the Ox Bow Incident, etc. at about eight bucks a pop. I did see some Criterion titles that I already own, like the Rules of the Game mixed in the wrong sections.
I may check in later to see if they drop their prices even more. |
40% off DVDs at my local Media Play. I picked up Six Feet Under S3 and S4 for $55 each. Also had the Seinfeld 5+6 giftsets for $41.
|
40% off DVDs at my Media Play, too. Got Batman: TAS vol. 2 for $25 and Superman: TAS vol. 2 for $15.
|
40% off at mine as well:
Constantine 2 disc - $13.79 The Nightmare Before Christmas - $8.99

And can anyone else confirm the Seinfeld 5+6 set for $41? |
