He came up to the front and told them to give them to me, as they were removing the others from the shelves.

DUDE, for the love...which store in OKC was this ??!?!?!?!?!?!?

Anyone checked the Eugene or Springfield Oregon stores?

I took them to the register and they scanned at regular price. I acted surprised and said there was a shelf tag for them that said $5.99. The cashier said they could only sell them to me at the scanned price but I could speak to a manager at customer service. When i went over to CS, I took them over to the tags and showed them the price. and we both went back to CS. She said she would have to get authorization to sell them to me at that price and walked away. They had me waiting there for about 30 minutes until they came back and refused to sell them to me at they price.

They offered to give me a 30% discount on any 2 TV DVD set I wanted. Now their counter offer is of course a "bait and switch" tactic. They actually tried to take advantage of their own mistake by trying to get me to purchase a higher price and more profitable DVD set from them. I of course refused their offer.

In California that would be illegal, scanner laws..If a price rings higher than shelf price you get shelf price and 3 bucks if it is lower than 3 bucks you get it free.
If they have a shelf tag up they are 100% required to honor that price.
you could call weights and measures but iam sure they fixed it by now.
then they would be even more pissed at the 10k fine

Well I was able to find "3rd Rock From the Sun" and "Remington Steele" tonight. Everything else rang up at regular Target price.

I wonder what the aftermath of this deal will be? Considering Target solds hundreds of thousands of their DVDs for $5.99, an average of a $40 loss (boxsets)...will this mean shitty weekly deals? Will this mean there will be no more stock of Boxsets (i.e. Not ordering anymore Little House of the Praries)....Guess we will find out eventually.

For Target, it will probably be taken as a hit against earnings for this quarter and then forgotten about. For the studios - assuming Target restocks - it will be more fuel to on the fire for the TV-on-DVD fad.

And, if that one guy who got arrested gets lucky, it mean's he'll never have to work another day in his life again.

I don't know if that story is true. Might be, but seems a bit unbelievable if you ask me.

He probably works for Target and thinks he can scare people into not looking.

I agree. They wouldn't throw you in jail overnight for thinking of shoplifting.

Right on the money. Well, it's the 13th... anyone else still finding this deal out there?

sotra 08-13-05 01:12 PM

Can somebody just confirm for me that the only non-boxsets priced at $5.99 found during this "sale" were Jaws, The Jerk, Pocahontas and Mary Poppins. I already have Mary Poppins and Jaws, but got Pocahontas for $5.99 and would like to go and see if they still have The Jerk.

In this case, the scanned $ would be the price.

Some (grocery) stores use to even give you one of the product free if it rang up higher than the shelf/advertised price (Randalls/Tom Thumb comes to mind).

This is absolutely true. If an item is marked or scans a low price, they, by law, have to sell it to you. They can correct the error after you leave, but they have to sell it to you.

If anyone has an extra copy of Pocahontas to part with, I'm game :)

Nope, my fiance and I got The Bourne Identity for $5.99 also.

Someone on another forum reported finding the new Pooh Heffalump DVD for $5.99 as well. Would have picked that one up for my son had I known that was another title to look for.

BiMonSciFiCon 08-13-05 03:04 PM

the Pooh Heffalump DVD tag on the shelf @ my local target was marked 5.99 - but no copies left or i would have snagged one for my niece

paulringodaman 08-13-05 03:05 PM

The Princess Diaries 2 was still scanning for $5.99 (For my sister, not me!)

That may be true about the scanned price, but it's not true about the price marked on the box (at least it's not a federal law, some states may require those prices to be honored). Otherwise people could just stick another price tag on a product (which is a crime, but they'd have to prove it) and get it at that price.

They also don't have to honor the price in the ad if they post that it's a mistake--they often do, to keep good will, but they don't have to.

Maxflier 08-13-05 06:05 PM

Finally made it out to the Target in Harvey,LA and none of the ones i scanned came up at $5.99,but the deal was obviously in effect at some point because every season of Friends was completely sold out as well as BoB.

How about the next guy to pontificate on what a store can and can not do wrt to misprices actually back up their BSing with links to authoritative sources? Stating your opinion and calling it fact doesn't help anyone - it's just mental masturbation and thus should not be done in public.

two4one 08-13-05 06:37 PM

Perhaps mental masturbation should not be done in public... But it does seems that you like to watch...

This is true, so long as there is verbiage on the flyer stating that they are not responsible for typos.

I think that if something is pricemarked, a store must honor that price. Switching tags is a seperate issue that the store needs to police. I think that is why most store use price scanners and don't mark items with a price tag. In essence, this turns the tag on the shelf into the tag on the packaging, which stores must honor.

I will visit the BBB website to look at consumer rights to end the "mental masturbation."
