I agree MScottM - there are some good prices there. Some are better than "supposed" future online sales events, some are close within a couple dollars or less and some not. You have to decide if you want to chance the online or see it and be sure (floaters, etc.). I actually made up a spreadsheet to calculate the prices, including sales tax and shipping so I can know for sure what is the best price and the difference in price between the top 3. This way I can make an informed decision on what is "best," qualified as is it low enough for that DVD that I will pay, do I want it now, do I want to chance it going lower (a sale here or there), if not the lowest is the extra cents or dollars worth it or so small not worth quibbling over.

Sometimes when you do the math, as MScottM said, you may find out the pricing is better than expected, if not the lowest......real close.

IMHO.

If I had the 10% Members card, I'd probably be all over this, but factoring in the $25.00 for the card, and probably never using it again during the year, I don't make out as well. I buy all my books through Amazon, and wouldn't purchase dvds at B&N unless there was some kind of promotion like this.

EvlAsh 05-28-05 10:06 PM

Does this sale apply on a national level or is it a local thing?

I was in a B&N today and the clerk told me the B2G1F sale was going to be going to be going on until 6/30. I was kinda surprised, and asked her if it was 5/30 or 6/30, and she insisted it was 6/30. Can anyone else confirm this?

The sale runs through the end of June.

Shagrath 05-29-05 05:39 AM

First post edited to reflect new ending date. Also, some people have said that multi-disc sets (even just 2disc Criterions) are supposed to be 10% off. Is this on the tag (because all the ones at my store say $39.99) or something that's taken at the register?

Also, f one of the mods can actually change the thread title to reflect this, that would be great.

I think it might depend on the store - at my local Barnes & Noble, most of the boxed sets have a 10% off sticker pasted on the outside of the box (and it says members get another 10% off on top of that). A different B&N nearby did not have these stickers last year, but they do now.

Also - for people who figure out the price ahead of time : at my local store, if you buy something for $100, the cash register takes off the first ten percent, leaving $90, then takes the next ten percent off the $90, leaving $81, so it is more like a 19% discount, instead of 20%. It is no big deal, but if you are spending hundreds of dollars, it can throw off your math a little.

MScottM 05-31-05 07:40 AM

I think anything marked at $39.99 or above with at least 2-discs qualifies for the 10 percent discount.

And if you look at my above posts, you will see that when I did the math, I took into account how they apply the discounts.

It's on-line too. www.bn.com

Folks, there are some good deals here if you do your homework! Here's the online order I just placed:

Essential Steve McQueen Collection...... 48.28
Seinfeld - Season 4........................... 34.96
M*A*S*H - Season 8......................... FREE

Total = $83.24

Used $5 off $50 code (XPR9PTN), which made the total $78.24

Used the Discover Card link which gets me an extra 7% cash back:

http://www2.discovercard.com/shopcen...n_movies.shtml

With free S&H, no tax and the above discounts my effective total is ~ $73-

The total for these 3 items would be ~ $93- at DDD AFTER deducting 20% from their current prices!

NOTE: The deal would have even been sweeter if I had been a B&N member or had ordered items of more similar value (least expensive item is free).

OP: You might want to change the title of this thread to reflect the fact that this deal is now also available online.

Unfortunately, not everything is available in the deal online. I just checked a couple of the Criterion boxsets, and they don't fall under this deal. I had to look up about 10 of the 29.95 titles to find 3 that would take, and even after the $5 off 50 coupon, after I add in tax, I'm back to an avg of $19.51 a piece. At the DDD sale, these titles will be $17.25, which is friggin' awesome!

Great deal for anyone looking for all the South Park seasons....

I came out pretty well on this deal, making 2 purchases (and I am a member)

South Park- Season 4 : $40.49
South Park- Season 1 : $32.39
South Park- Season 2 : FREE
TOTAL : 72.88

South Park- Season 3 : $40.49
South Park- Season 5 : $40.49
That 70s Show- Season 2 : FREE
TOTAL : 80.88

So all 5 South Park seasons and That 70s Show Season 2 for $154. Considering the best price on the 5 season pack of South Park is $146, this was a steal. Thanks to original poster.

I saw the 48.28 price WAS there in the last couple of days - just changed so he must have picked it up then.

BN does adjust prices up and down over time. I have seen prices go up, then down, then down and then up again, ad infinum. Just what happens - so wait if you want to it may go back down and may go up. Not all their prices change like this - it only appears to happen to the ones you really want.

Apparently, they raised the price since I placed my order (~ 10 a.m. on 6-1). They also had the Complete James Dean Collection for 48.28, but that has also now been changed to 55.18 and they upped the Seinfeld season 4 to 39.96 :thmbsdwn:

EDIT: Have also noticed that most of their Criterions are no longer discounted at all.

NatrlBornThrllr 06-06-05 02:58 AM

I'm glad I ran across this...with a B&N membership, I should be able to strike quite a deal on some Criterions. I'll probably attempt to restrict myself to the $29.99 titles...though, if they're offering that additional 10% off of all $39.99+ titles, I might have to pick up three of those as well, as that'd come to 19% off plus the B2G1.

Anyone have any luck using this 10% printable coupon on top of the discounts for boxsets and the membership discount? If it works, that could make the deal even sweeter.

10% Off Coupon

NatrlBornThrllr 06-06-05 04:25 AM

Expires June 8th. That's enough for me...I'm printing it off and heading out to the nearest Barnes and Noble first thing tomorrow. I'll post letting everybody know how it turns out. It says nothing at all about "this coupon may not be combined with any other offer," so if they reject it with the other discounts...I'll definitely raise a fuss.

Christi P 06-06-05 06:37 AM

My local Barnes & Noble usually has a big stack of new releases, but since the sale started, they have only been getting in one copy of each new release (1 copy each of Moonlighting, Newsradio & Batman Animated 3, etc.).

They can order in another copy if you ask, or reserve the one copy they have on order for next weeks new releases (I had them reserve Lois & Clark and Wonder Woman 3 for me).

The clerk said he had never seen this before, and I asked him if they were only putting one copy out at a time to deter people from using the buy 2 get one free sale on box sets, and he said that was probably the reason.

So, if you are planning to use the sale to get boxed sets, you might want to call your B&N a few days ahead of time and ask them to hold or order the sets you want.

NatrlBornThrllr 06-06-05 02:43 PM

For the record, the 10% printable coupon that dvd182 posted does, indeed, work with this deal, making it even sweeter. I picked up the following:

Scenes From a Marriage CC ($49.99)
Solaris CC ($39.99)
Naked Lunch CC ($39.99)

...for $70.24 out the door. At Amazon, it would have cost me $116.88. 10% off the sets priced $39.99 or higher, 10% member discount, 10% printable coupon, B2G1. Comes out to $30 for Scenes From a Marriage, and $20 each for Solaris and Naked Lunch...after tax. Can't beat Criterion titles for 1/2 the MSRP.

Edit: While I'm at it, I guess I'll also brag about the rest of my shopping day. I hit a few GameStop locations, and picked up The Fox and the Hound for $12.99, Out of Sight, The Color of Money, and Curse of the Jade Scorpion for $6.99 each...and best of all, the OOP Supergirl LE for $6.99.

Sorry, just felt the need to bump this. That printable coupon expires in a day and a half...and there are some very solid deals to be had.

Just bought some textbooks (not in a college store) and used the preferred reader's discount at the same time, but I think the latter is always usable.

Bobbin 06-07-05 03:39 PM

Sweet...I used my B & N member discount online, forgot the $5 off but still got:

1 $40.45 Rescue Me: Complete First Season
1 $0.00 Seinfeld - Season 4
1 $35.96 Martin Scorsese Film Collection
------------------------------------------------------------------------
$76.41 Net Product
$0.00 Free Shipping
------------------------------------------------------------------------
$76.41 Total Shipment Price

A lot better than the DDD 20% off sale, and much quicker shipping!

Christi P 06-07-05 10:38 PM

I am planning to send in for the Cheers/Frasier rebate, but I noticed that Frasier rang up as the 'free' DVD. Has anyone ever tried sending in for a rebate with a receipt showing you got the DVD for free?
