Picked up a few of these from Big Lots last night, haven't watched any yet but they're all single-side and single-layer! That means they've most likely got too much compression, like the 50-movie box sets from Treeline.

Abbot & Costello Shirley Temple

I got Abbot & Costello double feature dvd Jack & The Beanstalk + Africa Screams (with Frank Buck) in a case. They also had a Shirley Temple A Little Princess DVD with a bunch of bonus shorts on it in a case. Which made me go "aw I bought one in a cardboard sleeve without any shorts a couple of months ago". Man am I cheap.

This isn't about this bargain, but it is about the $1 we see. My cousin sent this to me, and I found it interesting, even though it's old.

I got The Great Rupert(Jimy Durante and George Pal work) / Something to Sing About (James Cagney) under the banner Comedy Movie Entertainment copyrighted by Dollar Entertainment. Oh and I didn't really care for that article, the author's opinion shows through, his thoughts, these are crap and people are buying them because they are lazy and cheap, is bull. I want these films, I love these films, I would buy better versions of some dollar DVDs if they were better made but I would rather experience this great lost art that has gotten such little attention by those with control than not at all.

If all these "double features" are single, sided, single-layered, that REALLY makes them worse than useless. The compression artifacts would make the quality worse than VHS by default. Too bad they can't chage $2.00 and make them DSSL or RSDL discs.

The ones from Dollar Entertainment (I think the same company that does the Treeline "Megapacks") are single-layer and so are overly compressed, but the double-features from Genius Entertainment that have shown up in the thin plastic cases at 99-Cents Only stores are dual-layer! I picked up 5 and of course haven't had time to watch any yet, but the encoding quality of those should be decent.

Did anyone buy Rescue From Gilligan's island with the episodes of Dusty's Trail as a bonus? I have the Rescue From Gilligan's Island dvd from Miracle Pictures that looks terrible and i would like to know if this other dvd is any improvement.

Well I haven't seen the version from Miracle Pictures so I can't make a comparison, but the double feature Gilligan/Dusty looks OK. If you're expecting something that looks like it came off one of the official Gilligan's box sets, you'll be disappointed . . . remember this is only a buck so there's really nothing in the way of any restoration/remastering going on here. For a dollar DVD, it's fine and has the original music to boot.

Hi. I just saw these at my local Dollar Tree. Here is a web page that compares the transfer quality of two $20 versions of 8 Samurai. Does anybody know wich version the Dollar Tree version resembles more? One looks like crap, but one looks incredible.

It's the crap one.

Also, if you ever run across the Platinum version, it's crap.

I bought the Platinum one last year and it came with The Dragon Princess. I picked up the one from the dollar store in hopes it was the better one.

Oh well.
