Didn't realize he was that young. Lewy Body Dementia body was the same thing Robin Williams had that led him to take his own life.

I always liked his art on The Maxx, but it was definitely an acquired taste, and always seemed to land gigs that his style wasn't appropriate for. (Sandman, Aliens: Earth War, Batman)

Very sad. I loved his art, and he's like the first of the earlier Image Comics creators to pass away (even if he wasn't a founder of Image or anything).

I'm glad I got to meet him at the Rhode Island Comic Con a few years back.

I know he had plans for a series of graphic novels in his "Troutverse" (or was it "Trout-A-Verse"?) line of comics, that would have culminated with a story that explained at least some of the lingering mysteries from The Maxx. Hopefully, these may see the light of posthumously.

In any case, rest in peace, Sam. Your art was beautiful.

Yeah. The dude definitely had his own unique art style, which, to me, is always a compliment whether you like the art or not.

RIP

I remember when I was collecting the Batman Black & White statues for a while and I never could make up my mind if I really wanted the statue they did based on is artwork. I thought it was ugly and cool at the same time.

Sam Keith art would be very much not for me and then very much yes for me, and that is, I think, part of what makes him an interesting artist. I also got the vibe that he doesn't compromise on using his own style while also being a good team player. No one else did it like him. Peace to his family.

I just remember he and Kelley Jones (on Batman) just had these freakish proportions but with a full understanding of art, it was just their design work. Wasn't always for me but at times I dug it. Both worked on Sandman which fit like a glove.

I remember tracking those Marvel Comics Presents issues with Keith creating the Wolverine bad guy Cyber.

I did not care for his art at the very dawn of my comic book exploration, because I preferred the more polished bullshit out there. Years later I re-discovered his artwork. I think Sam Kieth & Jae Lee's work make for great double features.

Jae Lee really changed/refined his artwork Early stuff (also Marvel Comics Presents, Namor) was definitely Bisley inspired and more abstract, but I think by the time he got to Inhumans it was still stylized but I dunno, cleaner?

Yeah as a kid I didn't really appreciate, say, Bill Sienkiewicz's art on New Mutants or even Mignola on Cosmic Odyssey, it took some artist friends of mine to really sing their praises for me to give them another look with a less critical eye on comparing them to the mainstream. Kieth was like that too.

I used to get so irritated as a kid when I saw his name attached to a comic I wanted to buy. I hated his stuff. Now, as an adult, I think it is brilliant.
