Gold Key and their awesome painted covers!

I have to say that as a kid, their covers always got me excited, only to usually be disappointed with the inside art. :(

^ I looked this one up out of curiosity and apparently the first three issues were drawn by Wally Wood, so at least on those books the Gold Key cover-versus-interior divide probably narrowed considerably. The wiki also notes that Dark Horse reprinted those three as a trade paperback (pricey now, though). With the color coordination and diverse lead characters, I was kinda surprised that the concept wasn’t taken from a toy line or adapted into (or from) an animated tv show. Seems like it would have been an ideal series for Hanna Barbera to produce with, say, Alex Toth handling the design work. :)

There was quite a bit of feuding going on between the Image founders and the "company men" back in the early 1990s. PAD was taking a lot of potshots at Image Comics in his "But I Digress" column that culminated in a debate between David and McFarlane at a con. And Byrne wasn't a fan, either.

I'm not really sure which side started it; but I remember David and Byrne taking a lot of digs at Image and the founders back in the day. I remember, back in the earliest days of Image, the climate was generally anti-writer and there was sort of attitude that writers weren't necessary -- and they were frequently listed in the credits behind the colorists and letters in what seemed like a passive-aggressive move. Maybe that sentiment is what pissed off PAD?

I think that was more or less the gist. Image was comics by artists while writers were an afterthought. It's why early Image crashed and burned, producing almost no acclaimed or memorable runs until Liefeld got Alan Moore on Supreme.

Until the 1990s Gold Key was pretty much ignored by mainstream collectors. There had always been collectors that specialized in collecting Gold Key, Barks Donald Duck, or painted covers in general, but not the DC/Marvel crowd. When Valiant began putting out new comics of Magnus Robot Fighter and Doctor Solar, it created interest in the older silver age issues. For whatever reason, M.A.R.S. Patrol Total War also became collectible.

That's exactly right. I think the Gaiman Angela ownership situation further fanned the flames, but the Image guys basically said (even before they went to Image) that they didn't need writers or worse that the writers were holding them back, and that directly threatened PAD and the like. And these guys were rock stars and were treated as such. And it's not like it was a new thing, there's that famous story about Liefeld on Hawk and Dove where he drew parts of the comic sideways and Karl Kesel had to lightbox the pages and basically redraw/rearrange them to publish the normal way, and that was like really early on in his career.

So many tv shows you wouldn't necessarily think fit the medium received limited runs in the '60s and '70s.

I only had a copy with schmutz on the cover and I found this replacement copy in high grade that cost me a whopping $50 (it only has one really noticeable spine ding, nice light cream pages, no heavy musty smell, and no other major corner bends/creases). Probably overpaid, but worth it for such a sweet copy. I picked it up from Kermitspad on-line eBay store at least 4-6 years back and it is marked as part of the C'ville collection.

To read the book, you ended up paying something like $30-$40 for a box of cards and $15 for the binder on top of that. Really soured me on Defiant Comics. As that was their first release, I really didn't want to get started on a company that was going to pull costly stunts like that.
