I always loved that cover of the first issue. I can still remember seeing it for the first time in a grocery store on the magazine rack and wanting to buy it so bad. I sat there and read it but still wanted to buy it. But it was $1.25 in 1982! That is the equivalent of $4.15 for an issue today. Regular issues were 60 cents so that is equivalent to $1.99 today. So, I could score two issues instead of this, so I went with the two issues. Choices were tough as a kid with limited means! Mowing one yard could get me between 2 and 5 bucks depending on the size so it was tough to part with that much for one issue, especially with Ms. Pack-Man, Galaga and Gyruss calling my name. No matter how cool the cover looked!

I thought this was a direct sales (non-returnable) title, it was sold in grocery stores?
But yeah, great cover!

I believe that a lot of these stories were inventory material that otherwise didn't have a home, that may explain why a lot of the stories were a bit underwhelming.

I could have sworn that was where I remember seeing it because we didn't have any comic book stores in my area in 1982. At least none that I knew of or ever visited.

Wasn't it magazine size? I swear I have a very ingrained memory of looking at this book on a magazine rack. The cover was that striking to me and I was only 9 at the time.

Thanks for the opinions on the stories being underwhelming. Saves me some money and I will just check them out digitally.

This is one ugly ass cover...for several reasons.

It wasn't magazine size, normal comic size but with glossy white paper, hence the hefty price tag. Childhood memories can be a bit deceiving (I know that from personal experience!), perhaps you saw a used copy for sale somewhere? Or maybe a Marvel magazine with a similar cover? Anything is possible.

 To be fair, I'm a bit older than you, I was 14 when the first issue came out so my memory may be a bit sharper on those specifics. ;) And we did have a local comic shop back then, so I bought some of these as they were coming out, depending on how much money I could scrounge up for comics, and this title wasn't cheap in 1982 dollars!

I am starting to think we need a book of just Gold Key covers.

I think I have posted this cover before, but this is one of my favorite Blastaar appearances probably because it was my first FF I ever owned, if my memory is correct. Cultshock may need to correct me on that. ;)

Re: Comic Book Cover Of The Day

It was around this issue that I quit buying the FF. It had just gotten crazy weird at this point. (well...weirder than usual) and I was more into DC at the time, so I had less money to spend on the stuff I wasn't liking as much. I would stick with certain titles longer than I probably should have, even if I wasn't enjoying them as much as previously, because I knew a new creative team could happen at any time and being the completist I was, I hated having breaks in my runs if I could help it.
