Looking at those covers featuring Frankenstein makes me wonder if they had permission from Universal Studios to use their trademarked likeness of the character, if somehow didn't run afoul of their trademark, or if it was just something that was ignored back then because it was just comic books.

Tomahawk has always had a small but dedicated fan base. Given its lack of popularity, issues go for more than you'd expect for a Silver Age title. It was a back-up feature in World's Finest during the '50s.

Good point, those look like the Universal version. But yeah, due to the era and that these were only ephemeral kids comic books, it was likely just ignored, if even noticed, by Universal.

I don't quite understand what is going on with this cover. Did he somehow get a kiss on the cheek from a painting, and she is mad about it?

And it looks like he busted Olive in the cheek.

I've never seen that Frankenstein themed Detective Comics before, that's cool! Also cool is that it's a Canadian edition, I'd guess those are quite a bit rarer than the US versions.

I kinda thought the same thing but if you notice, Popeye's ears are very red along with his mouth, nose and chin so I think that means they are just mad? Or embarrassed? Or ashamed?

Just weird coloring and a weird cover.

I don't remember that. By the time he became a teen he was a lover, not a fighter. :D

I don't have anything to add, but "Frontier Frankenstein" is some very satisfying alliteration.

Cool, a Pre-Trend EC comic, and the precursor to Classics Illustrated.

OMG, I forgot about those Marvel indexes, I always wanted to get a couple of those when I saw them advertised back in the day.

I love the bizarre FF Steranko cover. Strange that those indexes were NOT released by Marvel itself at the time.

The saga of Air Pirate Funnies is an interesting story, frequently referenced in the history of underground comics.

A while back I was finally able to read copies of those books (wink-wink, nudge-nudge) and found them to be rather uninteresting.

I had a graded copy of the first issue that I found cheap at a toy convention. Since it was slabbed I wasn't able to read it, but I did end up selling it on ebay for a good profit. :) The saga is really interesting, one or two books have been written about it.

I've been fascinated with underground comics since I was a teenager (and in small town Canada in the early 80s, they were really hard to find), and built up a decent collection of them.
