Aquaman

So if you grew up in the 70's or 80's you may have been of the opinion that Aquaman was kind of lame. The depiction of the King of Atlantis was less than heroic on the Super Friends TV show, and that image of the character seemed to stick.

Of course, since then there has been a great job done to rehabilitate the character's image. The movie with Jason Momoa certainly didn't hurt, but some great comics, including the Geoff Johns run, helped, too.

I got the Aquaman by Geoff Johns Omnibus, and I've flipped through it and the art looks fantastic, and the stories seem to be really well plotted and scripted. But the thing I've really been most impressed with is the run by Steve Skeates and Jim Aparo from the early 70's. That was some really good storytelling that held up really well against what Marvel was doing at the time. (Many DC titles still read a lot like early 60's comics in the early 70's, while others were ahead of the curve, like Dennis O'Neil's work on Green Lantern/Green Arrow and Batman.)

But that run by Skeates and Aparo was really good. Between that and the Geoff Johns stuff Aquaman has definitely had some great runs.

I collected Peter David’s run during the early 90’s which was great.

Aparo's run was great.

It was! And how about those great Nick Cardy covers!

Yeah, I kind of dug the Peter David run where they Wolverined him up.

Any discussion about Aquaman always brings back memories of Taffer and Aquaman eating his little fish buddies.

Always a fan of Aparo, but I liked the New 52 run as well (not sure how far I actually read tho).

I tend to like Aquaman comics each time I dip into them. The Peter David run is a standout that I still need to finish.

I’ve been buying all the new Aquaman related titles DC has been pumping out this last year, but haven’t actually read much of it yet.

Given how much I like the character and the comics I've read so far, I'm definitely going to get the two trades compiling a large part of Peter David's run. Unfortunately, the third volume has yet to see release. Bummer.

If you liked the Peter David run of Aquaman I recommend people check out the early 1990’s run of Arion as well, which loosely tied in with Aquaman.

Re: Aquaman

I just got the Aquaman by Peter David Book 2 in the mail today, and ordered Book 1.

My only question is will there be a Book 3 to complete the run? It just seems odd to not put out Book 3 given the success of the Aquaman movie and the fact that the sequel is coming up before too long.

(And, yeah, I know that with all the corporate merging and a lot of stuff up in the air for DC both cinematically and with the comic division we may not get any word on this for a while, if at all - unless it's already set for a release later this year.)

Don't expect anything rational from DC's trades department. They've been all over the place the past few years.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of.

I hate single floppy issues, but if I can't finish the story otherwise...
