Treasury Editions & Oversized Comic Books
 

I though we had a thread about this but couldn't find it. My decision to start one is because one of may favorite things about comic books are the treasury-sized ones. Even though the majority of them were released before my time, once I learned about them, I started collecting them. I have a pretty big collection of Treasury books but throughout the years I missed some releases and have learned of some obscure ones that are a little harder to track. Just this past month, DC released a treasury edition, (or Famous First Limited Collector's Edition like they call it) of their first comic book ever, New Fun Comics #1. At one point, this was supposed to be a Wal-Mart exclusive, but then it was supposed to be released at LCS and book stores, but with the pandemic, it seems that it was only released as of now through Amazon. This book is hardcover, like some of the Famous Firsts from the 70's and it's gorgeous.


There was a nice website called Treasury Comics that had a up to date listing of all the Treasury and oversized books released by every company but apparently that side died. There this other site that a good list (don't know if it's complete) up to 2018.

The listing of course is missing anything released over the past 2 years, including the 3 X-Men Grand Design Treasury Editions. Does anyone know of a site that has a complete listing?

They seem like they'd be fun to collect. Never really got into Treasury editions but their size lends them to being displayed.

I have quite a few that I bought new (yeah, I'm an old fart). I had no idea that the format continued past the 1970s. That New Fun book looks nice! Might have to do some huntin' for that.

Edited to add: Well, that didn't take long! Got it on Ebay! Doesn't come out until the 20th though.

One thing of note: Even though Marvel has been releasing Treasury Editions for the past 4 years (starting with the Spider-Man one, Guardians of the Galaxy, Women of Power), some of the books they call Treasury in recent months, are not Treasury size per se. This happened with Silver Surfer: Black and History of the Marvel Universe. They are oversized but not Treasury sized.

Image put out a fun one a few years back, Giant Size Kung Fu Bible Stories. It was mostly Erik Larsen and Bruce Timm.

I’ve always loved Treasury editions, but can’t quite remember my history with them.

I’m almost positive I picked up a lot of the original DC ones back when they originally came out, but at some point lost them all. More later, past my bedtime.

but before I forget, there is a cool treasury podcast as part of the Fire and Water Network of shows.

I bought several Treasury Editions back in the 70's and early 80's. My favorite was always the Spectacular Spider-Man edition from 1975, which was actually a reprint of ASM Annual #1 (Sinister Six) and ASM #6. It had a fantastic John Romita cover (which immediately caught my attention). After that I was hooked on the oversized editions. Great stuff!

Unfortunately, I read them all to death and they're beat to hell. I think I've still got them somewhere. I love those things.

I bought a bunch of these in my youth and still have several floating around somewhere. My favorites were the Defenders and a Holiday Grab Bag from Marvel and the Tarzan books from DC.

A cursory check using the Price Guide shows that I have almost all of the DC editions. What's missing is all the Rudophs. :lol:

I love them, but I only remember buying two when I was a kid, a Hulk Treasury, and Batman vs. Hulk. I'm sure I would have bought more, but I had limited funds and $1.50 or $1.75 would get me nearly a half dozen regular comics.

Also fantastic about that Spider-man Special Edition is the back cover is a reverse angle of the front (showing the back of the villains and Spidey's "face").

Some old school dealers have told me stories of how some scammers (including dealers themselves) would rip off the top cover for the DC Treasuries and try to sell them to rubes as if the book were the real deal. For example, a con artist would rip the cover of the Superman #1 Limited Collector's Treasury and try to sell it as if it was the original golden age Superman first issue. Well, to my surprise this type of scam still happens on eBay

This was my very first comic book that I remember owning. I got it when I was 6 in 1977. It had all the Flash/Superman races up to that date, plus all kinds of fun bonus pages like blueprints to the Fortress of Solitude, the bottled city of Kandor, and much much more. It was lost to time but I managed to snag another copy off eBay.

Not a fan of over-sized comic books. Too hard to store. I prefer a uniform size for everything. Even those old Love & Rockets TPBs and Epic Moebius TPBs are a pain in the butt to store on my bookshelves.

The only Treasury I remember owning is back when I was a kid (actually one of my first comic books) was Marvel's adaption of The Empire Strikes Back.

I first Oversize comics was DC Special Series #27, Batman vs Hulk with art beautiful art by the GREAT Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez.

Last year, I found the sequel to it in paperback at a local habitat for $0.50. Found a Pizza Hut bookit certificate inside for a free personal pan. I wonder if it is still redeemable?
