The 4th Annual DVDTalk Eisner Comic Book Challenge - February 2018

Eisner/Award Challenge

What's a Comic Book Challenge?

- monthly threads to encourage more reading and discussion
- a way to figure out "what do I read next?"
- motivation to try different genres
- motivation to keep reading and make progress on our unread piles
- a place to get recommendations

How does it work?

- we pick a genre (or company, or title, or whatever) for a month
- we post in this thread and talk about what we plan to read and read throughout the month
- you could keep a spoilered list in one post and update it all month, or post as you read
- in theory the lists could be kept in a separate thread to allow for fancier formatting while avoiding clutter

What makes it a "challenge"?

- well, unofficially, the goal is to read 100 comics a month, but that isn't stressed
- the group discussion will challenge and encourage you to read more (the main goal of most participants I imagine)

Who can participate?

- anyone and everyone!
- you don't have to list your reading or even post at all to participate, but what's the fun in that?
- quasi-technically, anyone on the planet who reads a qualifying book for the month is a participant, whether they know it or not

When does it start and end?

- it begins at dusk on the last day of previous month, and ends at dawn on the first day of the next month
- this bonus time allows for possible "double counting" cross-Challenge content
- content eligible for both Challenges has the bonus of being able to be counted for all 24 hours of the last/first days of both Challenges

How does counting work?
- as with every other 'rule', we're pretty liberal and you can count any way you want really
- in general, a comic book counts as one
- for graphic novels and oversize books, feel free to count one for every twenty pages

Who wins?

- there are no losers, the person who reads one page a month is equal to the person who reads 20 books a day

What is the schedule?

January - TV/Movie/Book
February - Eisner/Harvey/Etc Winners
March - Rotating Company
April - TBD (random idea every year)
May - Make-Your-Own
June - Reality
July - Science Fiction
August - Fantasy
September - Outside-Your-Comfort-Zone
October - Horror
November - Comedy
December - Holiday (w/ bonus Thanksgiving and New Year's time)

Want a personal checklist to help you pick stuff to read?

Obviously you'll want to edit the below spoilered example checklist to fit your needs.

Any comic nominated for a major award qualifies.

I was going to call it Awards or something generic but decided to honor the great Will Eisner.

Challenge begins at dusk on January 31st and ends at dawn on March 1st. Full double-counting crossover possible on both those dates.

Wikipedia list of international awards, thanks Joe!

And a wildcard that anything done by Eisner counts.

I hadnít planned on this one, but just skimming one of the lists, it looks like a lot of comics are eligible somehow or another.

Re: The 4th Annual DVDTalk Eisner Comic Book Challenge - February 2018

I discovered yesterday that Google Play has a good selection of digital comics, so I bought some, and even found a free issue of Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olson, which just so happened to be written by Jack Kirby.

I liked Black Hammer vol. 1 but feel I should read it again now that I'm familiar with the characters.

I finally got around to reading the first volume of The Incal, which I'm sure has won some kind of award sometime. The art style had kind of kept me from reading it before, but I liked the story once I got into it. I'll buy some more because they're on digital sale right now.

Sounds similar to my ďproblemĒ where Iíll sample first issues or volumes, often for each Challenge, but move on to try new things, building an incredibly huge backlog of runs to finish.

Iím thinking of finally reading Letter 44 this month, but the stack next to my bed is already several months worth of smaller chunks.

Re: The 4th Annual DVDTalk Eisner Comic Book Challenge - February 2018

I started reading Blackest Night, and just finished the Prologue. I've always wanted to read it, but only recently bought the E-book on Google Play. If anyone is interested, some of the higher tier episodes in DCUO are about the Blackest Night storyline.

I signed up for Comixology Unlimited last night, since I stumbled upon it and it offered a 30 day free trial. Looking forward to seeing all that is available on there.

My problem is sampling things for sales (and Challenges too). It's so easy to buy a cheap first volume to try something out, then buy the rest while it's still on sale, but then move on to the next new thing on sale before reading the old one.

Letter 44 is a perfect example. I liked it enough to get the first four volumes, but I didn't get that far, and now the next volume is on sale again.

Seeing as how Bob Budiansky won the award for being inducted into the Transformers Hall Of Fame, I think I might put Blackest Night on the back burner till next month, and start on the Transformers Classics I bought from Google Play.
