Comics Bento

Anyone ever try this yet? My local FYE had a couple boxes for sale with a coupon for a free month. Basically it's a monthly subscription box where each month gets you four comics. My box contained a Captain Marvel TPB, a Loeb/McGuinnes Batman/Superman, an Indy comic I forgot and a hardback Bloodshot TPB. I think I might try it for a couple of month even though I'm afraid that I'll just get junk I don't want to read.

Re: Comics Bento

Haven't seen a FYE in awhile, but I have tried the monthly subscription by mail boxes. We have a thread about them here somewhere.

I've definitely thought about it. I think if you go on YouTube they have people opening them up.

Re: Comics Bento

I've been a member for about five months. I tried one month with a coupon code, enjoyed it, didn't cancel, then a couple weeks ago saw a 20% off code so I cancelled my monthly sub and re-joined for the one-shot 12 month membership. Turned out to be 16-18 bucks a month versus the 30 in the month-to-month.
Each month is themed - horror, strong women, creator-owned; this month's theme is Teamwork.
I've only had one title I really didn't like, an Inhumans title, and some I've really liked. This month's box had 6 books, 3 of which were 'digest' size; total cover price was about $66.
I started rediscovering comics when preparing for a move and going through my collection (turned out to be about 10 short boxes full), and I want to read 'new' stuff but I can't stomach paying 3.99 for a single issue.
Bento is heavy on Valiant, Image, and Marvel so far.
It's usually a diverse box (although with that theme), and the 'value' is definitely more than the monthly fee.

Re: Comics Bento

I always worry I would get Vol. 3 or whatever series Marvel has clearances Out recently. That’s what has kept me from signing up.

Re: Comics Bento

Valid point, and my initial concern.
Here is (most) of what I've received over the last few months. There's a few titles not included here, and Polarity, Pilot Season, and Translucid also weren't from them, nor is the hardcover Batman on the far right.
Click the link, sorry, can't figure it out.

Re: Comics Bento

If you haven't tried this, don't bother -
I just got an email from them saying
"With that, we’d like to announce that the JUNE 2018 Otherworlds Bento will be our last box shipped to subscribers. "
They say they're staying in comics but not describing in what context.
I know it was probably a little too specific a market (people who are into comic grab bag boxes but not enough into them to have a high likelihood of getting duplicates), but I have enjoyed my subscription.
