The 2nd Annual DVDTalk Fantasy Comic Book Challenge - August 2016

What's a Comic Book Challenge?

- monthly threads to encourage more reading and discussion
- a way to figure out "what do I read next?"
- motivation to try different genres
- motivation to keep reading and make progress on our unread piles
- a place to get recommendations

How does it work?

- we pick a genre (or company, or title, or whatever) for a month
- we post in this thread and talk about what we plan to read and read throughout the month
- you could keep a spoilered list in one post and update it all month, or post as you read
- in theory the lists could be kept in a separate thread to allow for fancier formatting while avoiding clutter

What makes it a "challenge"?

- well, unofficially, the goal is to read 100 comics a month, but that isn't stressed
- the group discussion will challenge and encourage you to read more (the main goal of most participants I imagine)

Who can participate?

- anyone and everyone!
- you don't have to list your reading or even post at all to participate, but what's the fun in that?
- quasi-technically, anyone on the planet who reads a qualifying book for the month is a participant, whether they know it or not

When does it start and end?

- it begins at dusk on the last day of previous month, and ends at dawn on the first day of the next month
- this bonus time allows for possible "double counting" cross-Challenge content
- content eligible for both Challenges has the bonus of being able to be counted for all 24 hours of the last/first days of both Challenges

How does counting work?
- as with every other 'rule', we're pretty liberal and you can count any way you want really
- in general, a comic book counts as one
- for graphic novels and oversize books, feel free to count one for every twenty pages

Who wins?

- there are no losers, the person who reads one page a month is equal to the person who reads 20 books a day

What is the schedule?

January - TV/Movie/Book
February - Eisner/Harvey/Etc Winners
March - Rotating Company
April - TBD (random idea every year)
May - Make-Your-Own
June - Reality
July - Science Fiction
August - Fantasy
September - Outside-Your-Comfort-Zone
October - Horror
November - Comedy
December - Holiday (w/ bonus Thanksgiving and New Year's time)

Re: The 2nd Annual DVDTalk Fantasy Comic Book Challenge - August 2016

I'm finally digging into some of my Dynamite bundles. I feel like I have tons of Red Sonja in both physical and digital but haven't read much of it. I started with Queen Sonja and her gravity-defying outfit, and I'm tempted to get more in the Comixology sale, even though I should just read that other stuff.

8/1
Queen Sonja 1-3

Image spoiled for size, and maybe NSFW:
Spoiler:

8/2-3
Queen Sonja 4-5
Red Sonja She-Devil with a Sword 35-40, 2, 0, vol. 2 3-6
Red Sonja Altered States

8/4
Game of Thrones 1-2

8/5
John Carter Warlord of Mars 1-3

8/6
John Carter Warlord of Mars 4-6
John Carter Warlord of Mars 0
Outcast 1-3

Tales of the Batman: Alan Brennert

8/29
Game of Thrones 3-6

8/31
Red Sonja Omnibus 1-3

After reading maybe 100 books in July, I think I'm at about 5 for this month. Working on the September thread now.

I had no idea this was a thing, but actually read some stuff this month that counts. I'm very new to comics, so these might be a good way to find some new reading material.

Lumberjanes #21-28
Lumberjanes: 2016 Special: Makin' the Ghost of It
Gotham Academy #1-7

Also maybe Paper Girls #3-5, but not sure that counts as fantasy, or more sci-fi only.

I consider any superheroes qualifying as fantasy. But most of my reading has been actual fantasy, and this is one of my better challenges. I just finished the first volume of Game of Thrones, which has been an interesting read after watching the TV show because it offers a bit more depth in places. Now I want to get some more volumes.

I don't disagree with your assertion. I was considering pleading that case at the beginning of the month, as I am not really into what most likely actually qualifies as fantasy. That being said, I do enjoy Game of Thrones, and do have the first volume of the graphic novel. I've been putting it off, as I have tried the get into the novels, and have found them to be not to my liking. If the GN is similar to the show, without getting too much more depth it sounds like it would be right up my alley. I just found the original book to be too dense, and overwhelming.

I don't really worry about what qualifies since Trevor is about as lenient as it gets.

I've read part of the first novel of GOT and enjoyed it, but I haven't gotten that deep into it. I do think the comics are sort of in between, mostly following the main TV storylines but with a bit extra. It is a bit of an adjustment recognizing some of the characters, though. I think it'd be worth giving your GN a shot.

Re: The 2nd Annual DVDTalk Fantasy Comic Book Challenge - August 2016

Yeah, so far, I think superhero books are all I've read this month, so I'm glad they technically qualify.

Back on the first I downloaded a bunch of pure fantasy books to my Dark Horse and Comixology apps, but keep ignoring them.

Read something from my:

Comixology - Crisis on Infinite Earths 8-9
Dark Horse digital - Dark Ages 1-4, Archie vs Predator 1-4
DC - Crisis on Infinite Earths 7-9
Groupees bundles - Athena 1
Humble bundles - Queen Sonja 1
Marvel -
original graphic novel -
physical collection -
physical single issue -

I actually accomplished my goal this month of getting current on both Akame ga KILL! manga series. Now I am not sure at all what to read for next month.
