Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
Specifically the Superman and Batman hardcover editions. Are they worth the money? Are they quality collections? I ask because I want to check out some of the early stories of both characters, but the Superman Volume 1 seems to be out of print. Is it worth trying to track down the hardcover, or just wait for the paperback edition that is coming out, but has about half the content.

Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
The only problem I had in the past with DC Omnibuses was the bad quality of paper (first print of the Death of Superman Omnibus) or the binding ungluing because the book was too thick. I believe that those Superman and Batman were an improvement over past omnibuses so they may be fine for what they are.

So it depends how soon you want to read the material versus how highly you value that oversized Omnibus build. If you don't care about size and want to read ASAP, get the paperback to get started. If you're into the Omnibus type books, then I'd say either hold off for the reprint or plunk down the extra cash to get a copy now. DC's Omnibus build is generally better than what it used to be (no more pure glued bindings, etc.) but it can still vary book to book. I have no idea about this first Golden Age Superman Omni but I'm sure there are reviews about it out there on the Google. |
Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
I have Batman and Superman and both are worth it. Good builds and page quality. Vol 2 of each comes out this summer.
|
Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
Thanks for the responses guys. I'm not in any rush to read the books, but do want to at some point. I just dont want to miss my chance. I placed an order on Amazon for Superman Volume 1. We'll see if it comes in any time soon. In the mean time, it seems that the moral of the story is that I should get Batman volume 1 now, and volume 2 of both Superman and Batman when they come out.

Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses

Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
Yeah I don't know if I'd bet on the first Superman being reprinted. It took 3 years to get the volume 2. I'd say keep an eye on ebay if you're willing to spend a little bit over list. I think there have been copies that went for less than $100 in the past few months. I'm really liking the $75 list price on these DC omnibuses. Getting 52% off at IST makes them a great deal and a day one purchase for me.

Justice League of America Silver Age Omnibus Vol 1 - April 2014 Batman Golden Age Omnibus Vol 1 - November 2015 Batman & Superman World's Finest Silver Age Omnibus Vol 1 - March 2016 Supergirl Silver Age Omnibus - June 2016 Justice League of America Silver Age Omnibus Vol 2 - July 2016 Superman Golden Age Omnibus Vol 2 - July 2016 Teen Titans Silver Age Omnibus Vol 1 - November 2016 DC's old material Omnibus game is definitely ramping up as of Batman Golden Age over the winter. The first JLA Omnibus seems to still be in print, so it's really just that Superman Omnibus that's gone OOP. Much like Marvel reprinting earlier Omnibus volumes of good selling titles (Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.), I think DC will see that there's going to be more demand for it, especially now that there's a volume 2 and probably more in the pipeline, and especially because it's Superman. Plus like I said before, DC is generally better about reprints, even of deluxe books like Absolutes/Omnibuses, than Marvel is. So I wouldn't worry about the fact DC was a little slow on the rest of these Golden and Silver age Omnibuses. |
Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
Supergirl Silver Age Omnibus - June 2016
Is this real!? Holy smokes, DC finally does something right. |
Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
You forgot the Flash and Green Lantern Silver Age omnibuses.
I got the World's Finest Omnibus in the mail today. I like the matching dust jacket design to the Golden Age books. I sort of wish the other Silver Age books matched. Also, I still can't believe I'm getting the Supergirl omnibus for $17.99. |
Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
As discussed in another thread, a Legion of Superheroes Silver Age omnibus would be a great addition to that list. It's even Superman-related!
I'm happy that they're releasing these Age-appropriate volumes. I saw there's a Bronze Age Brave and the Bold Omni coming, and that's the Batman I grew up with, but I have both Jim Aparo Legends of the Dark Knight volumes so I'm not sure if I need it. |

The Green Lantern Omnibus Vol. 1 - November 2010 The Green Lantern Omnibus Vol. 2 - November 2011 The Flash Omnibus Vol. 1 - September 2014 All three appear to still be in stock. Added to the breakdown: The Green Lantern Silver Age Omnibus Vol. 1 - November 2010 The Green Lantern Silver Age Omnibus Vol. 2 - November 2011 Superman Golden Age Omnibus Vol 1 - June 2013 Justice League of America Silver Age Omnibus Vol 1 - April 2014 The Flash Silver Age Omnibus Vol. 1 - September 2014 Batman Golden Age Omnibus Vol 1 - November 2015 Batman & Superman World's Finest Silver Age Omnibus Vol 1 - March 2016 Supergirl Silver Age Omnibus - June 2016 Justice League of America Silver Age Omnibus Vol 2 - July 2016 Superman Golden Age Omnibus Vol 2 - July 2016 Teen Titans Silver Age Omnibus Vol 1 - November 2016 I still think we'll eventually get that Golden Age Superman reprint if DC wants to sell more subsequent volumes. |

Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
A couple more to add to the list.
Wonder Woman Golden Age Volume 1 The Flash Silver Age Volume 2 |
Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
Had a 20% off coupon at Barnes and Noble, so I ordered the Batman Golden Age Omnibus volume 1 for 37.50. Incidentally, some third party sellers on Amazon had lsited the Superman Vol 1 Omnibus for mid $40s, so I grabbed that. And of course I got a notification that my actual Amazon order had shipped. Amazon still lists it as out of stock though.

Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
Amazon says "In stock on April 1, 2016."
Hopefully DC quietly reprinted it. |

Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
The Superman Golden Age Omnibus Vol. 1 is in stock on Amazon, and if your direct market sources don't have it yet, reprints are definitely on the way:
SUPERMAN: THE GOLDEN AGE OMNIBUS VOL. 1 HC (FEB130227) (2nd printing) |

That's what I figured. Does anyone know if there is a way to tell, without removing the shrink wrap, what edition the book is?
To each his own but I've never understood the desire for first prints of a trade that's just a collection of reprints unless something has actually changed with the design or build quality of the book. This second printing is likely going to be identical in every single way except for one tiny word in the indicia. |

Unless the price changed, DC's company spine logo changed, or the country it was printed in changed, then probably not. DC isn't usually like Marvel changing cover material or paper quality to the point that you can spot physical differences between first and subsequent printings.
Thanks for answering the question. |

It's that late 80's/early 90's comic book mentality still shining through. ;)
And I agree with you. I have seen some changes in the Marvel volumes in later editions, but not print runs. Sometimes subsequent editions have a thinner paper that makes the book slimmer, which is a plus for me. On the other hand, they seem to significantly raise the prices as well. Again, this is new editions, not just a second printing. |

I also agree, but I didn't collect in the late '80s/early '90s. :)

You really like the thinner paper? Some printings are practically see-through with the thin paper Marvel is using these days. And that thinner paper is much more prone to getting wavy with the slightest change in humidity. I find that absurd for premium items like Omnibuses. Dark Horse and IDW use some real quality paper for their premium editions. And in Dark Horse's case, they somehow provide more content in that format for a lower price than Marvel or DC.

Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
There is a listing for Golden Age Superman Volume 3 on Amazon coming out in December. They are really pumping these books out at a fast rate.
|
Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
Is there any word about Superboy(or Legion of Superheroes) or Superman Family(Lois Lane and/or Jimmy Olsen) Omnibuses?
|
Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
I would love to see a Legion Omnibus, even though I have most of the Archives.
I was pleased to see them pushing into the Bronze Age with Brave and the Bold. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...4,203,200_.jpg |

I am counting the days until that one comes out.

Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
Pretty tempted by the Supergirl Silver Age Omni with the Darwyn Cooke cover.

I'm getting it.

Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
Anyone collecting all of these? Just saw that not only is there a preorder page for Supeman Golden Age 2 on Amazon, but also a volume 3 as well.
|
Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
I did bite on the Supergirl volume, but in general I'm not a big Golden Age guy. Even Silver Age can be hit and miss for me.
|
Re: Thoughts on DC's Golden Age omnibuses
Ive got Superman, Batman. Wonder Woman is on pre-order. Also have Silver age Flash and Supergirl. They are all solid releases.
