I'm conflicted. My daughter has a gymnastics meet that day, out of town championships. She usually says she doesn't want anyone to come (she gets nervous), but this is probably one of those times where one ignores such pleadings and are there with your child.

If it makes her nervous for you guys to be there, then give her the space she needs and go enjoy free comic book day.

I never enjoyed it when family would show up to my athletic competitions. The only time I ever struck out twice in one game was when my grandfather from out of state showed up at a game.

Re: Free Comic Book Day - May 2, 2015

My friends and I have kind of made going to this a yearly thing. We don't have a comic book store in town but there's one a few hours away. We typically go the day before and go to whatever new superhero film is opening then the next day hit up the comic book shop. Sort of a fun yearly tradition. I don't really care so much for the free titles but the store we go to uses the day as a day for sales on most of their stock of trades/graphic novels, single issues, and figures.

I'd choose my kid 100 percent of the time. My kids would all get nervous when I showed up to their stuff. If it was something big, I'd tell them I couldn't make it and I'd hide in the back.

I can't see any scenario where years from know you'll be upset you missed FCBD in 2015... but if your kid does something amazing on Saturday, you'll never forgive yourself. About 10 years ago, my son pulled off a one-man triple play the same night I got dugout tickets to see the Astros (they were good 10 years ago!). To this day, I regret not being at my son's game.

I don't think the conflict is whether to go to FCBD but whether to abide by the wishes and not attend. I like the hiding idea. She won't be nervous, but if she's awesome you can pop out and congratulate her and she may be glad you were there.

Does Comixology not offer the FCBD specific releases digitally? I guess there is some delay before those appear?

They won't get all 51+, but they'll get a good chunk of them and post them over the next few weeks. That's my guess based on the past.

Turns out her event isn't until the evening so we don't have to leave until late this afternoon. I've hit my two local stores, but won't have time to actually shop for stuff or drive around to other stores as I normally would. To compensate, I did the Mile High annual 'deal': spend $400 and get all the FCBD books.

My local store surprised me by having Matt Wagner there! Introduced Jen and myself, thanked him for the decades of entertainment, and got a free sketch!

Got a pretty decent haul at my first store. I forgot how fun FCBD can be even though I'm not sure if it makes for new readers or not. The only one I wanted to get I couldn't was The Phantom one. My regular store was completely cleaned out and they were giving away random junk issues instead.

It's cool how the 2000AD sampler includes barcodes you can scan to download PDF material, the first one I tried was an ~8 page sampler of a graphic novel.

Marvel versus Attack on Titan [b story in Secret War #0] is one of the weirdest ones I saw; almost as odd as that 'Immigration and Customs Enforcement' book.

Savage Dragon Legacy looked cool at a glance, planning on reading it later.

@Trevor - epic picture / story, very nice!
@terrycloth - great deals, I didn't notice any standout bargains at my local cbs - Bedrock Comics in Houston.

My area had plenty of Bob's Burgers and my daughter grabbed a copy of Spongebob so they were out there. It's odd how inconsistent some of the books are, I've noticed omissions before.

Re: Free Comic Book Day - May 2, 2015

Got everything I needed this year plus some stuff for my niece and nephew.

First stop - A Shop Called Quest (Claremont, CA).

They let you take one of every FCBD book they have but they don't order every book. Just the stuff they think will move. Also, they usually only have a few Indie books for FCBD. Example: They only had 3 copies of this year's Tick book. I picked up most of my books here.

Second stop - Comics Factory (Pasadena).
They stock everything but only allow 10 books per person. I picked up the rest of whatever I'm looking for here. They also had a Buy 3, Get 1 Free sale so I stocked up on some back issues.

Third Stop - 4 Color Fantasies (Rancho Cucamonga).
This one goes all out every year. Tons of back issues with $4 for a pound. Artists signings. And a blood drive. I usually pick up any stragglers here but this year I didn't need to so I only stopped by to give blood. Tons of Futures' End 3D books.

All in all, a very good year.

Trevor - Great sketch!!

Didn't get any freebies but I picked up the following for half off.

Batman: Mad Love and Other Stories
Daredevil and Batman: Eye For An Eye
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Avengers
Guardians of the Galaxy: Angela
Spider-Gwen (issues 1-3, plus got a second copy of issue three that's a variant. Thought it was the fourth issue).

Re: Free Comic Book Day - May 2, 2015

Wow, some of you have great deals at your shops! My local two were only 25% off today.

But wow, with some of those deals you got I'd have bought ten long boxes worth today alone!

Which means I should probably be glad I don't live near you.....

My daughter's meet went well, she did great except for the bar event. Have any of you ever been to a gym meet? Wow. Four hours of sitting so far, for four minutes of her performing. Ugh. Good thing I had some FCBD books and a Grendel hardcover (newly sketched by the author!) to keep me awake.

Oh, man... I am so jealous right now.

Grendel is my #2 all time favorite series right next to Sandman.

Re: Free Comic Book Day - May 2, 2015

Missed this years FCBD. One Daughter had SAT another had soccer game. Full day of waiting, watching and driving.

First one I missed in a long time. I can probably still pick some up but then I always feel chincy going in after FCBD even though they are sitting there.

What's with the whole "donation" thing. Seems kinda shady to me.

Re: Free Comic Book Day - May 2, 2015

one of my local shops has a charity set up a table out front with all the free books and usually has a bunch of past issues. with donation of 5$ you can get one of each instead of the 5.

one of the main pro is the shops at the mall and they put the booth outside the store so it keeps majority of the people getting free stuff and leaving out of the store and leaves more room to shop the sales

My local shop had three free issues, or ten if you brought in a food donation for the local shelter.
