Superman's New Haircut
So not only does Superman have a new power and a secret to share with his best pal Jimmy, it looks like he's getting a new haircut.
DC started releasing their Post-Convergence June solicitations and Superman #41 gets a new writer and a new cut. http://i62.tinypic.com/290v2ts.jpg I did not enjoy the first story arc from Johns and Romita and found it hard to get through at times. I've never read anything from this new writer but I may give this issue a try. However, there's a lot of new DC that month including a new Batman Beyond, new Bryan Hitch Justice League, start of the Darkseid War and the We Are Robin book. I dunno. |
Re: Superman's New Haircut
That's a new costume too, isn't it? Doesn't his costume have some kind of odd wrist/glove thing?
|
Re: Superman's New Haircut
I actually don't really mind it. He's had some different hair styles over the years and this looks modern so I think it looks okay.
|
Re: Superman's New Haircut
How does Superman cut his hair, anyway? Kryptonite scissors?

He looks so dark and intense. EXTREME!

Re: Superman's New Haircut
Yeah. He blows his solar load with one blast and then he needs a full day to recharge. During that recharge time, he's powerless.
Don't know if it's just this picture but this Romita Superman is pretty trim. Romita usually draws his characters "chunky." I like the look. |

Back when Byrne was writing Superman in the late 80s, I remember at least one comic that showed him shaving by using a mirror to reflect his laser eye beams back at his face. |

Re: Superman's New Haircut
I haven't been following Superman in the comics since the first year of the New 52, but I wish they'd stop screwing around with the character. I understand that all superheroes develop over the years, but it used to be once every decade or so...Superman's changes seem to happen annually these days.

Although I guess that's when he can cut his hair. I have no idea why they would think to add this particular power, though. |
Re: Superman's New Haircut
Apparently, John Romita, Jr. asked for this new power. Or maybe he just asked for a new power in general and this is what they came up with?
Good idea with the hair cut explanation. I was totally over-thinking it with a Kryptonite Flowbee. |

Re: Superman's New Haircut
People are bitching about this new power, but Super-Ventriloquism is still OK?

I think most people would agree that the Silver Age got silly with all the powers. The worst in my opinion was the "super amnesia kiss" from Superman II. What the heck? Superman can give you amnesia by kissing you? |

Who said anything like that? I think you just created a strawman.

Are you kidding? I love super-ventriloquism! That's his greatest power. Especially when he's drinking a glass of water.

Re: Superman's New Haircut
I was finally going to give the new 52 a try but they're altering these characters so much from the original conceptions that they're becoming unrecognizable. Why not just create new characters?

That was because Donner had to change the ending... IIRC Superman 2 was originally going to end with Superman 1's ending, the whole reverse time thing (which is also silly, but I still contend that it was just a visible representation of Silver Age Supes ability to go back in time, and not really reversing the spin of the Earth). But that still isn't as stupid as throwing the super shield, or "rebuilding the great wall of china" vision.

The new hair partially resembles the design from Japanese collectibles company Kotobukiya for Superman. http://morethanjustreviews.com/wp-co...er-612x252.jpg |

Wasn't the super amnesia kiss something Lester did? I thought it was. The Donner Cut of the movie got rid of the kiss and replaced it with the spinning Earth reverse time thing. So both Superman I and the Donner Cut of Superman II have the same ending with Superman reversing time to fix things...
Boom! Retcon Kiss!

I haven't read much of the New 52 myself, but I was under the impression that Superman (under Morrison's Action Comics at least) was very close to the original concept of the character. Morrison restored the social crusader Superman of the 1930s/40s.
DC did stick with Clark being the social crusader for awhile tho. He quit the Planet and started his own blog to talk about social injustice and whatnot. |
Re: Superman's New Haircut
Yeah, I meant it was originally Donner's idea to use that as the ending for II instead of I, and Lester took over and the kiss became the resolution, sorry for the confusion.
|
Re: Superman's New Haircut
Yeah, the "kiss" was stupid, but nowhere near as stupid as turning the world backwards to turn back time.
I frankly hated that when I saw it as a kid, and I hate it even more now. It also bothered that Superman never bothered to do anything about the other missile, and just saved Lois. |
Re: Superman's New Haircut
Well, the other missile went into space. In the Donner Superman II cut, it's the missile that unleashes Zod and his crew from the Phantom Zone. It was supposed to be a plot point but again, that all got thrown out with Donner.

Re: Superman's New Haircut
In addition to the haircut, Superman and Wonder Woman are getting new costumes too.
http://i.imgur.com/NgtVi71.jpg http://i.imgur.com/fLMw1ya.jpg http://i.imgur.com/3DPWdXw.jpg http://i.imgur.com/UKrgJ4V.jpg I know Superman had that t-shirt and jeans look back during Morrison's run since that was an origin story before he got the "real" Superman costume, but I wonder why the t-shirt and jeans are coming back. The Bat-Bunny armor looks stupider every time I see it. It's freaking enormous too. I didn't know it was supposed to be that big until I saw that last pic. Are they trying to copy the Hulkbuster armor or something? Is this supposed to be Supermanbuster armor or something? This whole thing reminds me of the 90s when everyone was getting radical new costumes. We know how long that crap lasted... DC and Marvel never learn their lessons. |
Re: Superman's New Haircut
Maybe it's too early to tell but is the hint that at least with Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman the biggest result of Convergence is a new costume? Maybe the solicitations are just guarded/limited and Wonder Woman does mention a "daring new direction."
I hate the new anime hulk robo-Batman look... |
Re: Superman's New Haircut
Hurm.
|
Re: Superman's New Haircut
I thought Convergence was supposed to result in the continuing new 52, plus another continuity (the old one?) Or did I dream that up?
That looks like pre-Flashpoint Superboy all grown up. Are we sure that's even Kal? I'll say this for them, they're definitely not changing costumes for the sake of making it easier to make live action movies. |

Re: Superman's New Haircut
Short-haired Superman looks like a dick.
And Wonder Woman has faux Wolverine claws. That Batsuit looks like it came from a Donnie Darko anime. |
Re: Superman's New Haircut
Wow those costumes are beyond douchery! -ohbfrank-
|
Re: Superman's New Haircut
Mecha-Bat has police lights, for whatever that is worth.
