February 20
Chew / Revival [one shot] – unexpected crossover that doesn't quite mesh but it's ambitious, I enjoyed the first Chew style story more.
Chew: Warrior Chicken Poyo [one shot] – getting thin, one shots are interesting but the focus on Poyo is odd.
Chew 41-45 – The last two issues are some of the best stuff I've read, really a great payoff with nice action and drama.
Batman: The Long Halloween 1 – interesting art design, weighty story so far although some of it feels cliche after movies/rehashes.
Total issues: 119

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Eisner Comic Book Challenge - February 2015
Sorry for the lack of updates the last few days. It was partly due to some work stuff and my grandma entering hopice care, partly because I was reading a Usagi book where it was hard to tell which issue was which.
Day 21
Usagi Yojimbo 32-38, and some random shorts that I'm counting as another issue.
I did read a lot of Goon today, 19-31
Total books read: 91

Batman: The Long Halloween 2-4 – fun to see a diverse cast of characters but some of the dramatic irony feels too obvious.

Batman: The Long Halloween 5-7 - meh, I'm committed but not grabbing me as much as I expected from it's epic reputation.

Batman: The Long Halloween 8-13 - picks up nicely in the last chapter playing with reader assumptions and redeeming some of the slower parts.
Moving on to Powers and maybe some Invincible Iron Man (2008) or Dark Horse Presents...

Mainly for next year I guess, but here is a list of links to a bunch of awards. I tried to make the links go right to the lists to make them easily searchable, some are in yearly link form though. I spent some time going thru them and enjoyed the walk thru history; and finding some stuff that qualifies that I wasn't sure about.

The Goon 37-39
I'm hoping to get up to 120 by Saturday. I'd like to finish off the issues of The Goon I have and read at least one more Usagi Yojimbo book.

Powers (2000) #1 - I've since read more of the series and it picked up but this was a disappointing introduction; mis-directed focus on a random kid with little to establish characters. Bendis' dialogue seems hit or miss at times feeling overly crass and other times too "hip."
Total issues: 129
Thanks, epic list. For some reason I've just focused on Eisner winners this year. I wonder if having the challenge open to EVERY award (there are 21 listed) wouldn't end up being too open ended although I haven't really done much comparison... maybe only time will tell.

^ Yeah, it does open things up a bit. But it still only represents a small percentage of comics.
Unless you want to get really lenient and say that any Marvel comic from 2004 qualifies because it won publisher of the year from Wizard.

I understand if a movie has won an Oscar, but comics are kind of like a TV show winning an Emmy, only worse since they can run even longer.
Again, not criticizing the challenge or the people running it or participating--just going through my own ability to figure out what to read.
Too much work to figure out what came out that year.

That's not what I'm thinking at least. I think you have to read the storyline that actually won or was nominated for an award.
So if The Walking Dead won an award one year for best whatever, then only that year's issues would count.
I'm probably making it sound more complicated than it is. Seems pretty straight forward to me.

My thinking is the Eisner more or less counts for the run. So if Mark Waid won for Daredevil, his run counts. But a new writer wouldn't count unless they also won. Since indie books usually have the same creative team, it covers the run.

For example, winning a "best new series" Eisner should only happen once but not winning "best continuing series" in my opinion doesn't necessarily mean the creative team and title elements are less "award winning." Love and Rockets: New Stories #6 winning "best single issue" to me suggests the entire run be challenge eligible since they are so similar in design qualities but that issue was a pinnacle of the series' typical high quality. It would seem difficult or even arbitrary to place rigid cut-off for only specific issues or timeframes and often the award itself is vague olabout cut-off.

Wow, and I thought I was the super liberal one with Challenges!
I sort of see your points, but think the cut off isn't that arbitrary in most cases.
Some of these creator runs are years long, and they only won the award once. And single issue seems obviously just that, a single issue.
Not used to being on this end of the debate. But the 'rules' are overruled by each individual's interpretation, so go for it!

Powers (2000) #2-6 - Nice assembly of mystery, pop culture, and social commentary told in a unique style (sort of news docudrama with muted colors and spaghetti western faces) - after a slow start I'm hooked.

Eh, the more I think about it the more I agree with you guys.
I've been reading Bone and Nexus and while both have received a bunch of awards, it'd be a pain to have to search the award databases and make sure that every issue qualifies.
I still think that some discretion is appropriate though. For example, I guess it'd be 'safe' to count the entire original run of Bone, but I'd take a look at the actual awards before counting one of the follow up minis.
And if something won best individual issue or best storyline, I personally wouldn't count any other issues unless the series itself (or creator that year for that series) had awards.

I was also thinking it was the whole run, but (1) I haven't really dug into eligible titles and (2) I don't know a whole lot about the Eisner awards.
E.g., I know some people have been reading Saga, and I have the new TPB I want to read, but I hadn't really thought about whether these specific issues counted (or what issues they were reading). I just figured what was good enough for them was good enough for me.

The Goon 40-44. With that, I've finished off my Goon backlog, other than The Goon Noir, which I'll read some other time. I think I should still be able to get to 120 by the end of the day tomorrow.

Powers (2000) #8-11 - Stylized series with good atmosphere but this story arc seems a bit anti-climatic, clever plot that develops some of the series mythos.
February 27
Powers (2000) #7, 12-14 - Issue 7 seemed strangely inconsistent seemingly an inside Warren Ellis joke, the Little Deaths story arc was good and surprisingly seedy with a unique approach but a bit of filler.
February 28
Powers (2000) Annual 1, 15-20 - The annual was slow with an experimental approach using court transcripts. Powers' docudrama approach with procedural and focus on the media is interesting but just when it seemed to wear thin the Supergroup arc redeemed the series. Issues 17-20 were highlights of the challenge.

Almost forgot about the cross-Challenge double counting possibilities! Sorry all, should mention that in the OPs from now on. I wake up hours before sunrise, and remembered, so read a few double qualifiers this morning.
Finally starting reading the digital Preacher series that I bought all of last year. I had read the first issue before, and loved it, but keep putting off the entire series for some reason. Maybe this month.
Then, since I began the Challenge with the great Will Eisner, I finished with him as well, reading a couple issues of The Spirit. Seems weird counting it as DC, but I guess they publish/distribute it now. Love each one I read, debating whether to finish my hardcover collection of just go digital on it.
