The First Annual DVDTalk Eisner Comic Book Challenge - February 2015

Any comic nominated for a major award qualifies.

I was going to call it Awards or something generic but decided to honor the great Will Eisner. Should have opened it up for discussion or better ideas days ago, but forgot, sorry all. Not too late to change it I guess.

Challenge begins at dusk on January 31st and ends at dawn on March 1st.

Wikipedia list of international awards, thanks Joe!

How about a wildcard that anything done by Eisner counts?

If anyone has Maus on their to-read list, it won a Pulitzer. It was the first comic book to do that, But it also won an Eisner and a Harvey and pretty much every other award.

Thanks for the reminder to re-read that. Although one could wait for the Historical/Reality Challenge too.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Eisner Comic Book Challenge - February 2015

Ok, here we go.

Day 1

Usagi Yojimbo Mirage Series 7-12, 14

Goon 1-4, the ongoing series. I screwed up on the reading order, but it's ok, because I've read the stuff in Nothin' But Misery before. I'll be rereading it anyway.

Total books read: 11

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Eisner Comic Book Challenge - February 2015

February 3
Astonishing X-men 1-4: Tense effort that redefines the X-men with a novel adversary but seeing some elements in early stages that get over-exaggerated later (like Wolverine / Cyclops schism) it feels "over done" in retrospect.

Spoiler:
February 1
Started All Star Superman (issues 1-6 so far) - weighty spin on the Superman mythos with a good balance of eccentric science fiction and drama.

February 2
All Star Superman 7-12: Satisfying read but doesn't end as strong as it starts.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Eisner Comic Book Challenge - February 2015

February 5
Astonishing X-men 5-10: Wendon does good with dialogue and characters with Cassaday's artwork has a solemn feel that lends a good gravity to events.

February 6
Astonishing X-men 11-14: Gets almost psychedelic with surreal twists and a lot crisscrossing threads, fun stuff.

Hoping to move through more of Astonishing X-men then start up on Saga.

Day 7
The Goon 9-10. I like that this series is picking up some depth and character moments as it progresses. I was worried it was going to be all gags - which are very funny - it would just be hard to sustain for 40 some issues.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Eisner Comic Book Challenge - February 2015

February 7
Astonishing X-men 11-25
Giant Sized Astonishing X-men 1.1-1.2 - satisfying end with a nice gut punch. Tried to read issue 26 but it seems too different than what proceeded I decided on a break.

February 8
Sex Criminal 1-5 - just the right combination of surreal, playful, "too much information," and action but risks pushing the scale too far in any one direction depending on how things proceed from here. Semi-explicit and frank but at times too hooked on that alone.

Hoping to move through more of Astonishing X-men then start up on Saga.
