Probably not on the Spawn/Hellboy/Deadpool level, but Static (Shock) from Milestone hits the cutoff... the cartoon ran for four seasons!

I loved the Milestone version of Static. It's actually one of my favorite run of books in my 25 years of collecting. But there's no way Static is bigger than any of the other three you mentioned me thinks.

I'll reveal myself as a cranky old fart when I say that the only thing Deadpool means to me is that they have run out of decent superhero names a long time ago. No name recognition for me, but I have been out of the new mainstream comics game for 20 years.

I think people are underestimating Spawn's popularity and over estimating Deadpool's. Spawn was regularly selling 6 figures in his prime, he had a video game on the SNES and a video game on the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube. He was a playable character in Soul Calibur 2. He had a cartoon series on HBO, a live action movie, and a toy line that lasted for over a decade. By far he was the most popular character created in the last twenty five years. On that note however, nobody cares about him anymore at all and he's basically non existent.
Deadpool is popular, but he's mainly popular with comic book fans, and he can never reach the level of pop culture impact that Spawn did in the 90's.

Why would that be hard to believe? You have your favorite. I don't really care about DC comics or Spawn. Marvel is all I collect and read.
What would you want me to say: Defenders of Dynatron City, NFL SuperPro, Sleepwalker

It was a joke. Your username is "darkhawk," so I didn't really find it hard to believe that he's your favorite.

I hope you don't follow current-age Marvel, then, particularly after Civil War and what's been happening in Avengers Arena (though the cosmic stuff in War of Kings involving Darkhawk a couple of years ago brought him back to some prominence). Actually, if you're reading Avengers Arena, I hope you don't like the Runaways that much either.

After the Civil War, my wife and I had our first child. It has been too busy to read that much. I have Avengers Arena, but have yet to read it.

This article about Bruce Timm's comments on Harley in Suicide Squad made me think of this thread. She's not really well known yet beyond comic and video game audiences, but depending on how well Suicide Squad actually does Harley might count here even though she was created by the TV show.

Harley and Deadpool are the most popular ones now if the original question was asked today. Ninja Turtles probably third. Spawn.....I don't know.

Ninja turtles are older than 25 years, though.

That's ok. I re-read the thread and someone brought them up two years ago and taffer corrected them then too. I still say that Venom as kind of an anti hero was up there when the thread first started. The Guardians of the Galaxy have a ton of exposure, but the characters are all much much older.
Jessica Jones will get more exposure when they release her Netflix series, and Daisy Johnson is on Agents of SHIELD, though they're relatively minor characters.
Rhodes was around for long before, and was Iron Man for a stint, but I think War Machine makes the cutoff.
And Big Hero Six, though most wouldn't recognize the comic incarnation. Do the Incredibles count?

The only thing the movie version has in common with the comic is the name; it was all but forgotten until the movie was released. As for the Incredibles; it borrows heavily from the Watchmen but no one outside of comic readers seemed to notice.

The X-Men used to breed popular characters like it was going out of fashion back in the 70s and 80s. That trend seems to have stopped sometime in the 90s.

And it's still Deadpool, with Harley Quinn coming in a close second, and then, probably, Cable and Gambit tied for a third.
Deadpool is huge right now, he's got a movie coming out and Marvel pushes him like crazy. His first appearance in New Mutants #98 sells for big bucks despite having a healthy print run back in the day.
Spawn was kind of a blip on the early 90s radar; the character is mostly forgotten and Spawn comic books don't sell dick squat anymore.
