Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
This guy has 90,000 comics. I thought my collection of 30 longboxes was large enough, but he has 319 longboxes.

Re: Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
'I have them racked so they don't need to be moved around much. If I need to get a comic I go to my database, see what box the comic is in, go to that box in the storage rack and pull a single box to get the comic I want.' Still collecting, Bob reads around 115 comics a month - new and old. On a side note, I never understood getting busts like that. Seems super expensive and there are so many different ones. Of course, that's coming from someone who collects action figures and "dolls" (Hot Toys). |

He used to be a co-host on the Comic Book Page podcast for quite a while and frequently posted on their forum. www.comicbookpage.com
The page has some other information about his collection. |

Re: Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
I had about thirty long boxes but got rid of them this year because I was sick of looking at them and taking up space. I don't totally regret it but I do miss some of them sometimes!

Re: Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
You wish. He's married. He hangs out on the Eleven O'Clock Comics forum. He's a pretty cool guy.
He got the record when he saw some guy in Australia claim to have the world's largest comic book collection at 60,000 (or something like that) and thought "Hell, I have more than that." So he called up Guinness and asked them what he needed to do to get in the record book. He's been pretty blase about it -- he's sure somebody is going to come along any day now with a bigger collection; he recognizes that he just happened to be the first to call up Guinness. The other really cool thing: to get the record, the collection had to be displayed to the public. So he put the word out on message boards and at UC Irvine and basically had an open house this spring. And he basically gave away a ton of comics to everyone who showed up (stuff he had duplicates of). Anyway, here's the thread where he described the process and posted pics: http://bullpenbulletinspodcast.com/f...?topic=16874.0 |
Re: Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
No way I could do am open house if I were him, I would be so paranoid that something would get stolen. I mean with all those figures and stuff all over the place how easy would it be for people to just take something and make off with it?

Re: Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
That's a lot of comics! And that's coming from someone with 30ish long boxes and 10 short boxes!
|
Re: Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
It's a surprisingly neat and organized collection, for one so large. Most collections that size end up locked away in a storage facility or warehouse.

Re: Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
This reminds me, how do you all insure your collection?

I heard of one guy with a large and expensive collection that did have his stuff stolen from a storage complex. Inside job too. You've got to invest in a secure place and never tell people where it is, which is exactly the opposite of what this guy (that I've heard about) apparently did. |

Re: Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
I dropped spidey and comics in general in the 90's with the clone saga... got back in around 2003-2004 and read up to SINS, and baled again... this time only on spidey, as I still have my pull list everyweek

Re: Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
I don't bother to insure my comic collection. I have 30 longboxes full, and comics are my #1 hobby, but if I lost them all in a fire or tornado or whatever I wouldn't bother to replace them.
|
Re: Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
I'm the same way. If I lost my whole collection, I wouldn't bother replacing it. I'd probably force myself to go digital or give up reading comics all together.
I mentioned this to my wife once and she jokingly replied "Where are the matches?" |
Re: Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
I don't think it's financially worth it to insure anything but Golden and Silver Age books.

I can't stand digital comics. I have tried them, but I just don't like them at all. So if I lost my collection, I would just quit reading completely.

Re: Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
Love comics on the iPad, but only for comics I don't buy for flipping or collecting (GA and SA).
After moving three times in the past decade, it really made me wonder why I have so much physical media. Got rid of so many Trades and GN's and paired down 3 long boxes into one short box. DVD's and CD's have long been downloaded and sold. |

Re: Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
I know it makes me a terrible luddite, but I just can't stand digital media. I like the idea of buying a comic I can read forever, not a license I can use for as long as Comixology stays in business and doesn't change the terms.

I like to frequently re-read old books, re-watch old movies/TV shows, and re-play old video games. I'm not a once and done kind of person. So not actually owning the product and just owning a license is not for me at all. I can safely have assurance that barring a flood or fire or tornado or whatever I will still own all my printed comics 20-30 years from now. There is no such assurance that Comixology will still be around then. |

As of today, I have officially hit 14,000 comics.
That is all. |

Honestly, I lost track. I'll have to head upstairs to count at some point. |

A general rule is that a longbox holds 250-300 comics, but this changes depending on things like page count, paper thickness, bags, boards, and how tightly you want to pack the boxes. |
Re: Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
I have most of my collection in Drawer Boxes which are a bit smaller than normal long boxes. I think they hold 200-220.
|
Re: Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
Damn, I'm jealous of his collection and I'm currently close to 75k! but I don't have the huge collection of statues or toys that he does.
My goal this year is to finally convert over to the drawer boxes and make the media/storage room that I keep my collection in more presentable and purty. |

That is all. I was right at that total until three years ago. before moving for the forth time in 5 years and because we needed money towards a house I sold about 9500 of them. Wish I didn’t have to do it. I really miss having them . But it was a huge process to move them and the house was too small for them. Wasn’t going to pay to store them. Kept important stuff like everything Spider-Man Bats and Supes and a few others. |
