Spoiler:

That Judge Dredd is a classic reprint released by IDW. There's a different 2000A.D. title that will be oversized.

EDIT: This is the one....

^ Thanks for posting that. I'll have to check one of our sister sites to see if they got it in. I didn't see that one yesterday.

Is there going to be a Lego Superman toy freebie? I've seen a mock-up of one and it might be the only thing that motivates me to go out on FCBD this year.

I haven't seen that. I know there's an Iron Man 3 Heroclix that a few shops are getting.

Did anyone find an online store that is participating? I wouldn't mind getting The Walking Dead and FUBAR.

Re: Free Comic Book Day - May 4, 2013

No mention of freebies, but gohastings has a good sale for FCBD today, Buy 2 Get 1 Select Comic Free w/code: ULTRON, 40% OFF Select Graphic Novels (even though it says select, everything I tried worked), Must Buy 4+ w/code: GROOT

I snagged (all new):

The Walking Dead Compendium Volume 2 TP Trade Paper $24.30
Chew Volume 3 : Just Desserts Trade Paper $5.65
Chew Trade Paper $5.26
Space Cakes Trade Paper $6.07
Chew Volume 5: Major League Chew TP : Major League Chew TP Trade Paper$5.65
Chew Vol. 1 : Tasters Choice Trade Paper $4.35
International Flavor Trade Paper $5.65

Could have gotten the volume 1 and 3 of Chew Omnivore Edition for around $15 each (used), but decided to go this route to save a few bucks and have them match.

Any other cool compendiums/omnibuses out there you guys recommend?

You have to pay a small shipping charge, though.

My local store was great again, tons of everything and you could take 1 of each.

Sadly, they didn't have any of the stuff I wanted to buy.

Re: Free Comic Book Day - May 4, 2013

I had planned to hit a couple of stores in the Pasadena & LA area but discovered a store near my house that had just opened a few months ago. They let you grab 1 of each title and did not stamp the comics with their store information. Tons of mainstream stuff but low on indie (obscure stuff). No Heroclix. There was a small line at first but right before the store opened, it grew fast. I grabbed everything I needed and headed out unscathed. A group of teenaged girls in front of me grabbed every single title.

This may become my new LCBS.

Re: Free Comic Book Day - May 4, 2013

Largest comic book store (chain) in San Diego and they only let you grab 1 (comic) per person ... bullshit man.
No store stamp which did my OCD good, but wish I could have grabbed more. Didn't feel like driving to all the locations but got a Walking Dead and my Daughter is an Adventure Time fan so I let her get that.
As I said before, first time going to FCBD so not sure if the 1 per person is the norm or not. I would think you could get all of them but I guess that would mean they need to print millions upon millions.

It was fun though. Kinda like a pre SDCC. Actually a few kids and adults in costume

My shop let each person get 5 free comics, but if you buy something, you can get 5 more. Also at least 20% off almost everything. There were a lot of people there even though it's been raining all day.

Re: Free Comic Book Day - May 4, 2013

My friend in Austin snagged a good haul including all of the Walking Dead stuff and a copy of the 2000 AD for me.

He went to that joint that has the 10ft Hulk display.

Re: Free Comic Book Day - May 4, 2013

I went and tried another shop down the way and this shop is 1/3 of the other store and I was allowed to grab one of everything. Not much since I went late but grabbed one more Walking Dead, got Superman and Grimm. Saw a copy of 2000AD but it was jacked up like someone read it and proceeded to use it for a placemat. Not going to touch something like that with my OCD ...

Re: Free Comic Book Day - May 4, 2013

This was actually my first time going to FCBD despite the fact that I collected comics steadily for at least 15 years (prior to quitting cold turkey 2 years ago because I couldn't afford it anymore with 3 toddlers at home). It always struck me as something that wasn't really for the true fans, and most of what they give away for free is crap. I still feel that way for the most part, but my twins are going to be four in a couple of weeks, and I thought this would be a good way to expose them to comics for the first time. I'm not sure there if there was a limit, but I asked for Sesame Street/Strawberry Shortcake, Tinkerbell, Ninja Turtles, Spongebob, Kaboom, and Walking Dead (last one for me, obviously) and I got them all. Also I was pleased with the lineup of people actually buying stuff instead of just grabbing the free shit and leaving, which is what I expected. I was glad for the guys who run the shop, as they're a great bunch of guys and I do feel bad that I can't really afford to support them anymore.

All in all it was a really good experience and my girls really seemed to enjoy it too. I think we'll go again next year (I'd take them sooner, but by the way they've handled their books so far, they're not ready for books that cost real money).

BTW, a friend just mentioned to me that Comixology is giving away a free Guardians of the Galaxy 60 page issue of some kind. I'm going over there right now.

Re: Free Comic Book Day - May 4, 2013

At both places I went, I saw pretty much everyone who got free comics, buy something as well. I think it probably had to do with FCBD discounts.
I bought one comic but I could have walked out with a bag of stuff but I would have been sent to the dog house if that had happened.

I collected YEARS ago, most of the '80s and a little into 1990 but was also a rabid sports card collector. I just couldn't do it anymore. I only recently started to look at comics (horror) again and I'm just not impressed. I see a lot more art than story in a lot of stuff. For some, that art tells the story so little dialog is needed, but I see a lot that just is boring.

Today I picked up the first issue of THE COLONIZED
Fan of Zombies. Fan of Aliens. Why not ?

Re: Free Comic Book Day - May 4, 2013

I have two stores in my little city of 60,000. Both were slightly less generous than last year; the bigger chain store allowed 2 books per person versus I believe 5 from last year; and the smaller store gave one free comic and one free graphic novel from a small selection of their overstock, down from one GN and 2 books last year.

I brought my daughter with me to both stores, so she got some of the kiddie freebies and I got Walking Dead and Mouse Guard. Went back later with the wifey and grabbed a couple different ones. But i miss the days of being able to grab one of each.

The bigger store, Beyond Comics, was packed as always. Each year they bring in several artists and have 50% off all 'new back issues', which includes everything on the racks that's not the current month, and they keep up to a years worth of back issues on the racks. Last year I met Mark Wheatley and Marc Hempel, I didn't really look at the artists this year, it was such a madhouse. I bought a couple handfuls of DC stuff from the last year, characters I collect every appearance of like Swamp Thing and Phantom Stranger.

Might go back tonight and buy more of the recent 0 issues, or maybe some Vertigo titles. They also have a clearance room with 30 or so unsorted long boxes of 50 cent books. I spent a few minutes scanning them, picking out a few memories from my 80s collecting heyday that I may or may not own already, but they'll be fun reads tonight.

I'm feeling hooked on comics again. I've been mainly out for a decade or more now, just buying a few things a year mostly, but I think I'm ready to start reading seriously again, and filling in some 70s and 80s gaps in my collection. I wish I could find my want list, as they have 40% off all bagged back issues and some real nice items that I may need.

Time to clarify: there were four digital comics of four different characters on Comixology.com.

I went in there and they're just some of the free comics they offer and NOT part of the comic day batch. My friend got four and I was only able to get 3, so they obviously removed one now.

EDIT - just got that final Guardians issue.

Re: Free Comic Book Day - May 4, 2013

I went out of town to see some friends and see Iron Man 3 with them last night and there's a cool comic shop in town (my hometown sadly doesn't have one). I didn't bother with any of the free stuff but got a pretty nice haul of some sale stuff. Surprisingly the stuff I got while not hugely on sale compared to Amazon was actually a bit cheaper and I'd rather support a place like that whenever possible.

Picked up:
Batman: New 52 #18- $2
Batman and Robin: New 52 #18- $1.50
Batman: Knightfall Volume 2: Knightquest- $15
Batman: Knightfall Volume 3: KnightsEnd- $15
Gotham Central: Book 1: In the Line of Duty- $10
DC Direct: Superman Kingdom Come figure- $14.99

I went to House of Secrets this time, and grabbed the Dredd and Walking Dead comics. I then proceeded to spend $100 on the first volume of Milo Manara translations from Dark Horse, original issues of the Sandman arc Season of Mists, and the first trade of It Girl and the Atomics.
