Here’s a manga bundle at Fanatical. Looks weak, but the lowest tier is free.

I'd be so much more interested if the interface wasn't still complete crap.

Truth. I haven’t purchased anything yet because it seemed so laborious to click on everything to see what I already had.

Not sure how foolproof my method is, but I’ve taken to opening the Comixology app on a different device, and checking for what I own that way.

After ruining Comixology, AMZN cuts its staff.

That's tough to read. And it really sucks what amazon did to comixology.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

I dont understand the endgame for Amazon to do this ridiculous gutting at Comixology. Why did they buy it in the first place? Who’s going to run it? What are comic companies going to do in reaction to these moves at Amazon? I mean, around 7-10 years ago, almost all comic companies decided that Comixology and Amazon should be the main digital distributors for comics and that the companies themselves would only offer their unlimited subs to rent books for a month/year.

This is another perfect example as to why all these mergers suck for everyone

From the cheap seats, I'd wager that Amazon bought Comixology to merge into their regular Kindle service.

Even though comics are small potatoes, it eliminates a competitor and expands their user base and reach. Being digital, there's no warehousing or distribution involved, so they fold it into their regular operation easily enough then let most of the staff go.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

Yup, get rid of a competitor and sell more digital collections, and pretty much screw the individual issues. Basically a bookstore mentality towards comics, which kinda sucks for comics lovers, and pretty much has made me go completely over to the digital subs (where available) or humble bundles.

Just hope that this is something that pushes a comeback to the LCS and readers seeking hardcopies of the books they want.

The owner of Robert's Anime Shop had this to say about the news...

Based on social media posts by former employees, mass layoffs at Amazon company ComiXology, which retails and publishes digital comics, began on Wednesday. The layoffs are part of a plan to lay off 18,000 employees that the online giant began in November. At least two posts from people identifiable as ComiXology employees indicated that the entire company was being laid off, although a skeleton crew is being retained to assist with the shutdown. Digital comic sales will presumably be integrated into Amazon’s overall retail operations, with the fate of Guided View, ComiXology Originals, and other uniquely ComiXology features up in the air.

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

This just makes me think that digital sales of individual issues must have been negligible for at least the big companies to not either complain or try to start their own service.

Marvel and Dark Horse tried running their own thing for a while but realized that Comixology had the best tech for weekly digital sales, so they folded their weekly digital divisions and paid Comixology whatever fee to run it. Both Marvel and DC still have their unlimited digital subs, so they are still in the digital game running this under their own companies but it seems that all the weekly digital releases will be handle through Amazon, which has been mediocre at best in this business.

fujishig 01-23-23 11:05 AM

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

Doesn't Dark Horse still have their own digital storefront, or do they only keep it up for legacy reasons? I know I have a bunch of stuff on there that's not in my comixology account.

I don't think the technology was an issue, it was the visibility that comixology brought, which is now (and has been) pretty much dead.

Trevor 01-23-23 11:35 AM

Re: Digital Comic Book Discussion and Deals (Comixology, etc)

Yeah, Dark Horse started selling their stuff on Comixology a few years ago, but as an addition to their own store, which still carries everything and has weekly sales.

A couple of folks from Square/Reddit/etc decided now is a good time to more forward more firmly with their Comixology competitor called Omnibus.
Interview:
https://sktchd.com/interview/omnibus...ser-interview/
Site:
https://omnibus.app/

I know nothing about it other than the website and the interview. But I would love for a non-Amazon entity to come in and do what Comixology used to do, maybe even a little better.

The biggest hurdles, to me (besides having a competent app) is how many publishers are going to sell on their storefront and what happens to your purchases if they go under? If they realize their goal of having DRM free backups available then that mitigates the second part significantly.

I also wonder whether Comixology/Amazon has any kind of exclusive contracts with these companies similar to the whole Diamond/distribution stuff with physical comics. Yeah there are other distributors but not for the big guns.

A few pretty good bundles at Humble:

Elfquest
https://www.humblebundle.com/books/e...llection-books

2000 A.D.
https://www.humblebundle.com/books/2...ebellion-books

Saga
https://www.humblebundle.com/games/t...-relief-bundle

The last one is mostly games, but has Saga volumes 1-10, and supports the earthquake relief efforts.

Humble also has a bundle that collects Attack on Titan all the way to the end. Unfortunately there's no cheaper option for all of us who have bought the previous bundles and just want the delta.
