What does it say about the state of things at DC Comics that I'd entirely forgotten about Andy Diggle...despite that all going down right before I chatted him up a little at C2E2 in April?

Yes. DC has no idea WTF they're doing or saying.

I think what George Perez says is the main problem at DC:

"I became very frustrated," Perez said at a convention appearance following his exit from Superman in early 2012. He explained that there were basic questions about the character's new status quo that DC editorial couldn't answer for him. When he asked the higher-ups simple questions about the new universe, he'd get silence; "Are the Kents alive? What's his relationship with all of these characters? Who exists? And DC couldn't give me answers. I said, Oh, my gosh. You're deciding all these things and you mean even you don't know what's going on in your own books?" Two years later, and DC pretty much still doesn't know what's going on, George. At least you got off that sinking ship early.

I'm ashamed to admit that I'm buying more and more of these 3D gimmick covers each week.

I know, I know, I'm awful.

But I think it's because I've made a huge (and hopefully final) major shift in my overall collecting/hoarding/entertainment persona. For my entire life, my main hobby focus has been comics, but with frequent 'flirtations' into several other hobbies, mainly films. And DC comics were always my main focus. But after ten+ years of comics being on the periphery of my collecting; I'm back, and all-in for good. I won't totally abandon film and DVD collecting, but it's definitely way down on the totem pole.

And while the new 52 isn't nearly as good as the great stuff I loved at DC in the past, it's not nearly as bad as it would have to be for me to abandon comics (which will always mean at least mostly DC for me).

Same here. Comics are by far my primary hobby. Movies/TV would be a very distant second hobby. Those are basically the only two hobbies I have. Well, I read actual novels too, but I guess I just lump reading altogether as my primary hobby. I used to play video games, but I have lost interest in that hobby over the last five or six years. I am basically done with gaming completely as I have zero desire to buy one of the upcoming next-gen consoles.

Just wait until next year when they find a brand new/old way to bend you over for even more money! I'm thinking polybagged cards, randomly packed. Each decimal issue will feature an entirely different character from the regular title, the artists will write the story and the writers will draw, and the pages will be out of order so that you can have the fun of piecing the story together yourself!

Someone mentioned in the TPB thread that in the last issue of Legion, it's revealed
Spoiler:

that this Legion is on Earth 2.

How does that make any sense when the Legion title continued from pre-New 52? Now I'm glad I dropped it early.

Yeah. It threw some people in a tizzy. And it was done in such a nonchalant manner too. Briefly mentioned in the dialogue before moving on. It was almost an FU to Legion fans.

Same here. I use to collect EVERYTHING. Action Figures, Doctor Who stuff, Books, Disney CDs, Comic Books, Movies, Everything! Books were the first to go. During the early 2000s, I gave up on Disney CDs and Action Figures. I still collect an occasional figure but not like I use to. Since the new Who show started, I've stopped picking up everything because there's so much now. Over the past 3 years, I've stopped buying as many movies as I use to. Now, the focus is solely on Comics.

It's honestly not really the 3D covers I'm getting hooked on. It's just the Forever Evil storyline and the whole process of collecting comics again. I would buy most of them anyway, and figured an extra 90 cents per book made the 3D covers worthwhile.

Similar here on the gaming too. I used to PC and last generation game all the time, but once I got my iPhone and iPad I totally gave other gaming up. The brief moments of free time I get to game are very happily satisfied with apps.

I'm knocking on wood, but I don't think I'll ever be into the gimmicks. It's really only the storylines and collecting the basic issues that matter to me. I don't even care about condition. A Fair copy is as good as Mint in my collection.

But the problem is that most of the storylines suck, too. Oh well, to each their own. I love comics as well, but I get all of mine digitally now. Just don't have the space for singles anymore.

I'm excited for the Forever Evil mini-series. It started off pretty strong and I've always loved the Crime Syndicate. But unless you read Trinity War first, I don't know how people can jump right in.

Yeah, I'll admit that I'm biased. Or that my particular form of OCD/hoarding is so focused on my DC-centric childhood that I enjoy the collecting aspect of it as much as the stories. Whenever I read a bad modern comic I just re-read some of my older stuff and the magic returns.

I am close to running out of space; but am also moving all of my DVDs into binders, which will free a TON of space.

I did miss a couple issues of Trinity War, and but think my lifetime of comic reading and brief reads of most of the new 52 titles has enabled me to follow the story so far. But I'm looking for all of the TW back issues at a different store soon.

I used to be like that as well (only with Marvel). But I just went cold turkey from buying floppies a few years ago, and now I just buy the occasional hard-cover GN or collection, and besides saving a shit-ton of money, I'm enjoying comics a lot more now than I did when I quit the floppies.

Same here. I collect comics, but I collect them to read, not to invest in future financial gains. I am buying the standard Villains Months covers instead of the 3D covers simply because the standard covers are cheaper and they don't affect the story one bit.

I also don't care about condition. Like you said, Fair is the same as Mint as far as I care. My most valuable comic is likely Batman #251 Joker's Five Way Revenge, but its probably a 6.0 condition at best, and I re-read it every so often so the condition will only keep getting worse.

To me, as long as there are no missing pages and the staples are still holding the comic together, then that condition is good enough for me.

Story quality is really not that much different from times past. The bad comics have always outnumbered the good. (Its like that with anything really... there are more bad movies than good... more bad video games than good... and so on.) The thing is though that with nostalgia you tend to remember the good things and forget the bad things, so that makes the past look better than it actually was.

Yeah, since comics are my primary hobby, I am reading and re-reading comics all the time. So reading a bad comic is easily negated by reading a good one right after it. I read anywhere from 20-50 comics a week. Seriously. Probably about 70-80% of this time is re-reading older comics.

One thing I have found to save on space is not using modern bags and boards. That actually helps more than you might realize. I use larger Silver Age bags, and they can hold 6-8 comics per bag. Also with that many comics in one bag, it provides enough self-support so boards aren't needed.

Individually bagging and boarding each and every comic adds a lot of wasted space. Also with 6-8 comics per bag, I can just grab that one bag and sit down and read them all in on sitting without having to get up and deal with multiple bags. Its kind of like having the trade without actually having the trade.

I don't think I'm forgetting the bad comics of the past. The bad comics of the past are why I stopped reading superhero comics in the first place, and I don't see too much difference now. I still prefer independent and European comics, but then again I am a total hipster. ;)

You're way too cool for the rest of us.

In comics, as in most everything else, 90% of everything is crap. Fortunately, there are hundreds of comics published every month, so even if only 1 in 10 of them are good, that's still dozens of good comics to choose from.

Some monthly comics I like: Daredevil, Avengers, Saga, Superior Spider-Man, Lazarus, Uber, Archer & Armstrong, Sixth Gun, Astro City, Hawkeye

Supermallet 09-20-13 02:12 PM

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

The monthly comics I still read are:

Swamp Thing, Animal Man, Walking Dead, Thief of Thieves, Mind The Gap, Saga, Buffy, Angel and Faith, and Rachel Rising.

This guy puts the 3D hologram edition of Batman #23.4 (Joker's Daughter) in the microwave, and then in the oven. At the end of the video he says he is going to put it on ebay. It sold for $17.50 on ebay.

From the dismal reviews that sucker has been getting (and it was the most anticipated Villains book too!), reselling and/or microwaving sound like better options than actually reading it. :)

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

As expected, DC obliterated Marvel last month with 40.39% of the Dollar Share vs. Marvel's 28.49%. In the Unit Share department, DC has 45.17% vs. Marvel's 29.83%. DC ended up shipping 129 titles vs. Marvel's 67. And Marvel double-ships most of their best selling books.

Bleeding Cool

Things should go back to normal this month.
