Wait, I thought Justice League of America #1 came out a long time ago? Jim Lee and Geoff Johns?

The Johns/Lee title is called Justice League.

Justice League of America is a new ongoing that is replacing the canceled Justice League International.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

Krypton found!

Look! Up in the sky! It’s — oh, forget it.

Superman is, of course, a fictional character, the stuff of comics and movies. But that didn’t stop DC Comics, which owns the Superman franchise, from enlisting the astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson to “find” the location of his lost home planet, Krypton.

It’s in the constellation Corvus the raven, in the southern sky not far from Virgo and Hydra. The planet Krypton — not that it ever existed — would have orbited a red dwarf star called LHS 2520, Tyson concluded. The star is 27.1 light-years from Earth.

You’ll recall that according to the story, the baby Kal-El was sent in a spaceship to Earth by his parents, who knew that Krypton would soon be destroyed. As an adult in the city of Metropolis, he disguises himself as Clark Kent, a reporter fighting a never-ending battle for truth, justice and the American way. But he also has feelings. In the newest comic, out this week, Tyson is seen helping the homesick Superman trace his roots.

It’s all a good bit of publicity — both for DC Comics and for Tyson, who directs New York’s Hayden Planetarium and has become a popular science communicator — but you can also tell he has tongue firmly planted in cheek.

“As a native of Metropolis,” said Tyson in a statement, “I was delighted to help Superman, who has done so much for my city over all these years.”

DC Entertainment, which says it approached Tyson, had its own take. Co-publisher Dan DiDio said, “Having Neil deGrasse Tyson in the book was one thing, but by applying real world science to this story he has forever changed Superman’s place in history. Now fans will be able to look up at the night’s sky and say, ‘That’s where Superman was born.’”

And people thought the 90s variant craze was ridiculous.

Basically each of the 50 states, plus D.C. and Puerto Rico, gets its own variant.

What's the over/under for what a set of all 52 covers will be selling for on eBay a few days after they are released?

That's insane. Unless DC is offering a deal of getting one of every issue, how would someone even get them all? Order from each state. With comics costing $3-$4 each, you're looking at $156 minimum just for the comics themseves, not adding in shipping. I'd rather jump into the painted dog exibit before collecting 52 copies of a single comic.

This is when it is time to wait for the TPB & hope it has all the issue covers in it.

Don't forget Puerto Rico. Is shipping from there considered international? It so, it will cost an arm and a leg to obtain that variant.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

It must be really bad when DC has to count on it's remaining fan base to buy 52 copies of the same issue.

I hate variants. I remember being excited about All-Star Batman & Robin coming out and Jim Lee did a cover advertisement showing Batman and Robin swinging over Gotham. When the comic hit stands though it was in 1A and 1B versions. 1A had Batman only, and 1B had Robin only. Because showing Batman and Robin together on the cover of a comic titled BATMAN & ROBIN would make too much sense.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

This isn't a new idea. IDW and Marvel has been doing it for awhile now. Marvel had Spider-Man #666 with multiple comic store covers. IDW had their 100 variant covers for Godzilla #1 and the 59 covers for Mars Attacks #1. The Mars Attack covers even came in a package deal to get all the covers.

http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/...psed2936e0.jpg

There are countless other comics that have had more than 5 variant covers. DC is behind with this idea.

Here's a Brian Hibbs article from a retailers perspective on why he hates variant covers. He mainly talks about the "buy x number of copies get a variant" variety, which is different from this, but still a decent read:

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?p...ticle&id=41000

And to echo what someone said above, this is just another reason to trade-wait, though I can't imagine them putting an extra 52 pages in a tpb for covers...

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

I do think these variants aren't so bad. I think it's more of a nifty thing for DC to do for each state. I don't think you're supposed to actually try and collect them all. If you do, that's on you.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

Maybe they can scale down the covers in the TPB to 4 per page.

An issue with varient covers is one is cooler then the other. Now put 52 versions out. Some state is going to get the most awesome cover ever & some state will just get a cover of Aquaman's ingrown toenail or something crappy.

Also two of the new members, Vibe and Katana, each get their new ongoing series. Yeah, I predict those will be canceled by the end of 2013 due to low sales. Who the hell actually asked for a Vibe or Katana ongoing.

Vibe and Katana are clear diversity pushes mandated from above by Warner Bros.

As for the variant covers, 50 variants on one issue is a marketing gimmick to get people talking about the issue.

No, USPS to/from Puerto Rico is like any other state.

This. No one is making anyone buy all 52 covers. If you are dumb enough to try... don't bitch about the cost or difficulty.

Good thing Liefeld's gone from DC... otherwise imagine the complaining when your state's cover was done by him... :)

I'm not prone to the collector's instinct to own every cover so, on the surface this sort of offering by DC doesn't bother me. But we've already seen the kind of damage that stimulating the speculator market through gimmick covers can do. This just screams of more of the same.

The standard cover and the California and New York variants have been revealed.

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?p...ticle&id=42116

It looks like the variants are apparently going to all be the same except for the state flag replacing the USA flag.

Standard cover:

California cover:

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

That's crap, IMO. The press release said they'd be "honoring America", and having the same cover with the flag on each cover is weak sauce. I wanted one for my home state, but our flag is terribly ugly. And Alabama's state flag is patterned from a confederate battle flag. I don't think DC wants the press of the JLA raising a confederate battle flag in an image that's supposed to convey the bravery of the battle of Iwo Jima.

Or, these could just be two of the covers and the others could be very different. I guess we'll see.

The Valeyard 11-09-12 04:47 PM

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

No. I'm pretty much sure they're all going to be the same image with a different flag. All these uber-multi-variants are the same.

Godzilla #1:

Anyone who thought they were actually having 52 significantly different covers has something wrong with their brain. A monkey could've called this.

If its not the stars and bars, there's probably not going to be much of an uproar considering its a legitimate state flag.

If anything the idea of "paying homage" to the Iwo Jima flag raising is a little insulting in the comic book world. But say it's not - okay, so you raise the US flag with the superheroes. That's fine. But then having covers depicting them raising each state's flag? That's just an odd statement and idea given the context of the "homage." But of course its just a $$$ grabbing statement.

The February 2013 solicitations came out today, and DC is selling a pack of all the variants for $149.99.
