Really, despite all the talk that this was planned way in advance, it seems like they just shoehorned Flashpoint into this. Though this came out a while ago, they did say that anyone that did not have three issues completed by Aug. 31 would basically be replaced, so how far in advance was this planned? http://www.comicsbeat.com/2011/06/07...-by-august-31/ |

OK so here are my Week 1 standings for the New 52... in case anyone cares. In order of preference.
(The way I see it, anything http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/images/4.gif and up is worth buying straight out. http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/images/3.5.gifs are very good but missing something, which makes them recommendations with reservations. The http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/images/3.gifs are average/meh/OK -- pick up ONLY if you're fans of the characters, http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/images/2.5.gifs are deeply flawed and not worth purchasing, but perhaps maybe salvageable, and http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/images/2.gif and below can just go pound sand.) http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/images/5.gif Animal Man http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/images/4.5.gif Stormwatch Static Shock http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/images/4.gif Men Of War Action http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/images/3.5.gif Batgirl Detective http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/images/3.gif Justice League OMAC Batwing Swamp Thing http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/images/2.5.gif Hawk and Dove (would have been 3 if not for the art) http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/images/2.gif Justice League International http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/images/1.gif Green Arrow |

http://www.comicsbeat.com/2011/06/07...-by-august-31/ I doubt Flashpoint was originally intended to be the final goodbye of the Post-Crisis DC universe, because as is it did not really work that way. Instead lots of storylines just limped to the finish for major characters. |

Is that trident on a keychain attached to his belt? So he won't lose it?
I wonder if they get around to fighting bad guys by issue 6. That'll be something. |

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?p...ticle&id=34344 I kinda wish they went with a bunch of kids for their opinions. I don't see this promotion pulling in working professionals who already have a disposition that superhero comics are for kids. And I think kids can kinda roll with the issues without having to have everything explained to them in detail (I mean, I have no idea how popular Batman: Brave and the Bold is but they just jam cool characters in there and explain stuff later). |

It still amazes me that people have hope that this same editorial team and creators that caused the old DCU to implode on itself are going to somehow build something magical.
I think the best evidence of what's wrong with DiDio and Johns at the helm of the company can be found in their interviews for the various DCU animated movies. Watch the interview with DiDio and Johns on Green Lantern: Emerald Knights as they talk about what they've been doing in comics and it becomes obvious that they're creating these large scale stories that include as many characters as possible for the sake of doing so. Listening to them carry on about their massive stories that include and affect the entire DCU it becomes obvious that they've gone down the rabbit hole and are now viewing stories in terms of telling stories about the DCU instead of telling stories with the DCU. It's not about whether a story needs to be told that includes Batman or Green Arrow any more than their decision is based on whether or not they need 22 issues to tell a story. It's about DiDio is stuck in the mindset that massive = important and Johns, God help him, is the guy charged with making that happen. It's the same mentality that has alienated me from Star Trek and Star Wars novels and comics for much of the last 20 years. For me, the test of whether something is actually worth exploring is the synopsis test. If I ask, "What's this about?" and you have to give me an entire back story so I can even be introduced to something, then you don't have an actual story. What you have is part of self-important, self-referential "universe." |

That's story decompression at the worst. |

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?p...ticle&id=34344 "I have a ten-year-old nephew, and this new hipster Superman and homeless-hipster Clark Kent seems like a good start for him," Erial added. This is about what I expected, honestly. All complaints can be traced to the same underlying cause that has led to other complaints of readers like myself and others in this thread who soured on comics in the last decade: They take readers for granted too much. After years of creating stories about the DCU instead of telling stories that use the DCU, I fear too many editors and writers have lost their perspective on what those instances of taking us for granted even are. I'm sure some read this piece and thought, "Well, these people were never going to become comics readers anyway." That may be true, but it's a horrible reaction to have. The industry can't afford to only preach to the choir; its congregation is dwindling and they need more butts in pews. And, frankly, keeping in mind readers like this sample group would be healthy anyway, as it might help guard against editors and writers taking too much for granted. |

Now bringing back old readers, that's something they can do. Also, extending it out to kids to get new readers (and this is where the pricepoint thing is addressed. Do you really think adults who have never picked up a comic would start reading them if we brought them down to 99c? No, but kids might). Now whether this DCnU is doing either is something we'll see. I do see people who read comics, but not DC comics, have new interest in these titles, but how long lasting is this? |

Creative talent were probably not given much advance notice, except for a few of the bigger names. Rumors indicate DiDio was given an ultimatum by the corporate overlords and that his job was on the line, so reboot time. It was probably something that had been previously contemplated at the highest levels of DC, but sagging sales finally forced their hand.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
I loved Animal Man ('90s) and collected it's whole run. I don't collect anymore but if you guys are saying the new one is really good I might just have to check it out.
If anything good comes out of this, I'm hoping that the older stories in TBP will start getting more of a discount now. I'm on a real TPB kick these days- GoHastings is an especially good source for used ones. |
Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
I didn't read Animal Man beyond the Morrison run, but this is a very promising first issue.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide
The Peter Milligan 6-issue arc that came after Morrison's Animal Man run was quite good indeed. Excellent material.
The Tom Veitch shit, on the other hand... totally sank the book. And it went on and on and on... |

Another really strong week for the DC books IMO. Deathstroke was ridiculous and over the top awesome. Batwoman looks amazing. Demon Knights was fun, and funny. Suicide Squad was a fantastic introduction. Superboy, GL, and Grifter were all good story setups. Lots of good options for folks this week for sure.

All I picked up this week was Green Lantern. Interesting start. Curious to see where they take it from here.
