What is the state of Digital Comics?

What is the state of the digital comics these days?

I don't mean motion comics. But the backlog of comics that you read your on a computer or Ipad.

Are the major stories on them or is that still years away?

I really don't know; I have been casually following this, and it seems like it's big scattered mess with all kinds of different platforms and little content available.

I refuse to have anything to do with it until they start offering open, non-DRMed formats like mp3.

I've only dipped into the free stuff on Comixology etc. Price point of 2.99ish is too high for me for singles and I rarely buy singles anyway.
