Appreciate that opportunities exist for fans that want to get signatures. But I can't personally fathom paying the type of money that is now being asked for autographs. Maybe it's because when I was young (~30 years ago) most comic writers and artists were easy to talk to and interact with at conventions and any non-major actors/celebrities there would generally talk with you for a bit and had fairly nominal prices for autographs. I don't know how any kid these days could afford even going to the shows, let alone getting a few autographs to take home. A bit of a shame that Conventions have become relatively inaccessible to the people who (at least in the past) had enjoyed them most.

I got Charles Shultz's autograph for free back in the day (late 1970s-ish) at San Diego. I recall a later SDCC trip - late '80s maybe? - where Lou Ferrigno was signing photos for five bucks. That was the first time I saw someone hawking his signature and - even though I liked the Hulk TV show - thought he was a bum for wanting money. I guess he was ahead of his time and I was wrong.
My first SDCC autograph was Adam West for $5. I can't remember if I still have it in storage. |

Late 80s or early 90s I was walking around the exhibit floor at SDCC. Saw a nice friendly-looking older woman with a stack of Peanuts books. It was the first volume of the Peanuts collection. Then I realized it was his widow Jean. There was no one there so we chatted a bit about "Sparky." I got a book and she signed it. She told me more were planned.

Re: Comic Conventions
Not much of a Scream reunion without her, is it?

Re: Comic Conventions
They added Melissa Barrera, so they've got the replacement.

This Creation Con convention in Burbank, CA next month is quite expensive for guests. Jensen Ackles: $199 for a photo and $169 for an autograph. Ridiculous and there is a $20+ service fee each. JDM's fees are the same too. At least JDM has a much wider resume and he plays a really popular character in TWD. Ackles is probably B list at best and that's being generous. I can understand why the casual fans in this forum think these conventions can be ridiculously expensive. |
Re: Comic Conventions
That...doesn't seem like a good deal at all.

Re: Comic Conventions
There's a horror convention in Kingsport, TN in June that Alexandra Breckenridge and Ashley Green are attending. I would love a signed photo or picture with them, but I'm debating driving 5 hours from Nashville and paying $25 admission plus $80 each for a photo ($75 plus $4.91 fee). Jeremy Davies and Henry Ian Cusick from LOST are going to be there too. I'm really thinking about going. I didn't realize Michael Rosenbaum and Tom Welling were in Nashville in December at a con and I missed them.

Got a ticket to visit the Hollywood Show next Saturday in Burbank, CA
It only cost $25, Mainly there to get a few autographs and photos. One is of Kelly Hu. I even pre-purchased a professional photo with her for $50. Been of fan of hers since Martial Law on CBS many years ago. I recently saw F13 Part 8 that had her in it. I don't think I have anything great for her to sign, so I'll likely go with whatever 8X10's they have. Also, hoping to get Sheree J. Wilson from Walker, Texas Ranger. She's going to be there as well. I don't think I will have her sign a Walker season set. As Chuck Norris is heavily featured on all the seasons. Here is the list of guests showing up https://www.hollywoodshow.com/default/celebrities/ Joan Collins is also going to be there promoting her book. I was a big fan of Dynasty back in the day. I am thinking about it. |

Re: Comic Conventions
Just got back from The Hollywood Show. Lots of celebrities, but I stuck to the ones I drove there for.
Sheree Wilson, from Walker, Texas Ranger. She was absolutely a joy to talk to. So friendly and more than willing to talk about the show. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...b6a8bf957.jpeg and lastly Kelly Hu. Love her silver locks. She was pretty cool, but we didn’t chat much. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...0f5c871e9.jpeg |
Re: Comic Conventions
I can't remember the last time I saw her, but Kelly Hu is somehow even hotter as a 50 something with gray hair.

Re: Comic Conventions
Des Moines Con, which replaced Wizard World in our area, announced today that Charlie Cox will be at the con, which seems like a big get for them.

Re: Comic Conventions
Just wanted to give a heads up to anyone thinking of doing a pro photo op with Geena Davis or Susan Sarandon at a future convention. Here's a pic from this weekend's 90's Con. It's not my photo. Someone posted it on Facebook and blocked out the people for privacy. They said this photo op cost $190. Personally, I'd be pissed. The plexiglass partition during covid was bad enough, but this is ridiculous.

Re: Comic Conventions
For $190, that’s absolutely bullshit.
Jensen Ackles was at the Supernatural Con this weekend in Burbank and his handlers charge $200. But at least it’s a more personal experience like for this girl. |
Re: Comic Conventions
 OMG I looked up 90s Con on Facebook and there is a total uproar over Davis and Sarandon demanding a barrier, especially for that price. I’m seeing photos of 96 year old William Daniels posing with fans with no barrier.

I thought it was a poorly done Minecraft cosplay at first.

Re: Comic Conventions
Looks like the folks at 90's Con got an earful from the upset fans. They removed the boxes for Sunday's photo ops. It was still "distanced" so you had to stand a foot or two away from them. But the Sunday photos looked much better.
And they allowed everyone to retake their photos. Even if you didn't have a Sunday ticket, they would let you inside to retake the photo. It never should have happened, but it's pretty cool they tried to fix it. |
Re: Comic Conventions
That photo with the boxes is hilarious. Why even bother with the photos if you're going to demand something like that.
I can understand actresses not wanting random guys pawing on them, or using plexi barriers when COVID-19 was still an issue, but those stacked boxes just ooze passive-aggressiveness. A while back I remember reading a post by author on his private message board, where he did a convention with an unnamed actress who, after the show, commented that she wanted to go back to her room and shower for an hour to "get them off of me." Which actually makes me not want to go these things to get autographs. |
