The reason Betty is tearing up is because of the odor from the beaker of sulfuric acid in her big purse. As soon as Veronica steps out of the jewelry store, Jughead has been paid to throw it in her face.

You'd think that for their biggest marketing event in years, Archie Comics would have assigned a better artist to the cover.

Wow...I actually had this comic when I was a kid. Haven't seen it in over 25 years. Thanks for the flashback.

I agree on the artwork comment and was going to say something myself. Looks like a non-professional 15 year old drew it. Why?

On the entirely opposite end of the spectrum, it was drawn by a 77 year old (!).

Exactly. Here's a guy who's apparently been associated with Archie comics since the 70's who's been given a plum assignment like drawing the cover to what might be the biggest story in the publisher's history. I think it's great that Archie Comics respects their past and their artists. Marvel shit on Jack Kirby for years but at least Archie knows how to treat their talent. And while it isn't the best comic art I've ever seen, it is consistent with the traditional Archie style. Good for them.

Maybe it's the inker's fault on the above cover.
