Re: Reading X-Men! Tips and Advice?

I'll have to check out Regenesis, that sounds interesting to me since it was random to see who picked Wolverine and who stayed with Cyclops, and even then it wasn't entirely clear who went with who at the end of Schism.

I know Claremont worked on X-Men Forever a couple years ago so I'm not sure what you last read, but honestly I'll repeat it, I thought Messiah Complex/Messiah War/Second Coming was just about as good as any of the older arcs that i've read.

Spoiler:

this was the order they were shown in the book. Some of the people are people I don't know much about, but they were named so I included them.

Wolverine

Iceman - Logan goes to him first and tells him he needs him there as a teacher or something, because he is "everything that (Utopia) isn't." Then he offers him a beer treating him as an equal and bobby caves.

Kitty - doesn’t really give a reason, it is just apparent in the conversation with Colossus that she is going to the school.

Beast - calls Logan when the Avengers message comes up that Logan is reopening Westchester and says he is in...then he declines Scott's invitation. He then tells a green haired girl in his bed that he going help Logan run a school, which translates into that he is going to run a school.

Rogue - she and Magneto have a conversation about LOgan is doing what he believes...Magneto says that he hopes Logan allows him to come visit (joking).

Havok and Lorna - Logan pitches them X-Factor investigations, "a long way from family members who want to give them orders" referring to Scott and Magneto.

Idie - to be honest, i have no idea who this is, Hope didn’t want her to leave and was throwing a hissy fit and then presented her to Logan and said he better take better care of her than she did...means nothing to me.

Cannonball and Husk - Sam explains to Dani that he and Paige need a change because his head is messed up (?) and her powers are out of control.

Ink, Rockslide, Anole, Blindfold, Dust, Hepzibah – are arguing with some of the others (Prodigy, Armor, Pixie, Karma and a few others) and Ink explains that Pixie is an X-man, she is involved and been through a lot, but some of them just want to live, so that is why they are joining Logan.

Rachel – is going back to the school, she said she had been in space so long she didn’t even know they had left the school.

Quentin Quire – says he is staying at Utopia, then asks why wolverine has chains.

X-23 – said there is no choice but to be with Wolverine.

Frenzy – wants to be as far away from Cyclops and Emma Frost as possible.

Gambit – Said he wants to head east because he has found all the trouble he could in San Francisco.

Toad – begs to come and offers to be Logan’s janitor.

Cyclops

Psylocke - tells Logan she is still in for X-force because some things need done, but she thinks that the school is a step backward instead of forward. Scott tells her he needs her to lead a "Spy team" that will defend Utopia.

Colossus - doesn't think he is safe to be around children because he has the Juggernaut crystal in him now.

Magneto - refers to Utopia as his life's work (?) and tells Rogue that that doesn't mean it is all he cares about.

Hope and Mystique - Mystique never really gives a reason, but Hope whines for a little while about if she isn’t the Messiah that everyone thinks she is, then Cable died for nothing...so she is staying to prove herself i guess.

Dani – explains to Cannonball that she couldn’t go to the school, because she would miss kicking asses and wouldn’t be able to rest knowing that there were asses that needed kicked. Then they make out a little bit.

Dazzler – Scott tells her he wants her leading a street team or the new recruits in San Francisco “Dazzler and the X-kids.”

Prodigy, Armor, Pixie, Karma and a few others (?) – Prodigy, while arguing with Ink, says more kids have died at Westchester than Utopia and if he is going to be a target, he wants to be a target that shoots back.

Namor – “admires those who fight for their people.”

Danger – won’t go back to her “place of captivity”

Magik – says she is a prisoner

Celeste – wants to be at the opposite side of the country from Quire

Avalanche – has a bar in San Francisco so he wants to stay

Dr. Nemesis – initially asks what the lab facilities are like at the school and then declines because he ahs an experiment that is at a critical stage.

Storm - plans to leave to go to the school, but Cyclops explains that he needs her because he has Magneto, Namor, Emma with him, and he needs someone to make sure what they’re doing is right. Logan has Beast, Kitty and Iceman, they don’t need storm too (HORSE SHIT!).

Emma Frost – She tells Cyke that she is a teacher at heart and she loves children. She wants to go, but realizes that Utopia needs funding because Warren isn’t anymore.

Re: Reading X-Men! Tips and Advice?

Yikes, so many of those names that I don't even recognize.

I can't remember what I last actually read. I remember being turned off by Morrison and never really getting into CC's third run so I think early "New X-Men" was my end point.

Maybe I'll check out Messiah if those 3 mentioned are nice somewhat contained reads.

Re: Reading X-Men! Tips and Advice?

I posted this in the omnibus thread, but i don't know how much of a crossover there is between the 2, i know a few of us have commented in both, but i thought this might be healpful for someone reading X-men. This is a list of the issues reprinted in Omnibus size collections, I mean they will stand next to an omnibus and be the same height (and the issues that are missing), , but many are much thinner. I plan to do this for the older x-factor, x-froce, x-men (new x-men/x-men legacy), and New Mutants at some point, but I don't know when i ll get to it.

Uncanny X-Men Omnibus vol. 01 – 1-31
Uncanny X-Men Omnibus vol. 02 – 32-66

67-93 - were reprints of earlier issue

The Uncanny X-Men Omnibus vol. 1 – 94-131 + GS X-men 1 and Annual #3 (Annual 1&2 were just reprints)
X-Men: Dark Phoenix Saga – 129-138

139-171 - Missing

Wolverine Omnibus – 172-173

174 -195 - Missing

Secret Wars II Omnibus – 196

Secret Wars II Omnibus – 202-203

204-209 – Missing

X-Men: Mutant Massacre – 210-214

215-219 - Missing

X-Men: Fall of the Mutants Omnibus – 220-227

228-234 - Missing

X-Men: X-Tinction Agenda – 235-238
X-Men Inferno – 239-243

316-474 - Missing

Uncanny X-Men Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire – 475-486

487-491 - Missing (because only the B-stories in 488-491 were collected)

X-Men: Endangered Species – 488-491 (B stories)
X-Men: Messiah Complex – 492-494

495-499 - Missing

Re: Reading X-Men! Tips and Advice?

Thanks ivelostr2, that checklist helps a lot!

I guess the inclusion of the earlier Genosha stories in the Xtinction Agenda HC, plus the fact that it bridges the gap between the Lee/Silvestri/Claremont Omnis, makes it tempting enough for me to buy it. Unfortunately, it seems like Inferno HC is at full price at Amazon or I'd grab that too.

You know, of the pre-Image era, I had been collecting Lee's Uncanny and I read through all of Liefeld's New Mutants, but the one title I never really was able to read (because the back issue prices were insane and I don't think they ever really collected them) were Simonson/Portacio's X-Factor, featuring a lot of Apocalypse backstory. Am I incorrect, and are there collections out for them? In that era, this was basically the second X-men book with the original members.

Yeah, no formal collections in HC's they might be collected in a visionary trade or something. I'm in my car and can't check...

Some of the issues are collected in other trades...I ended up making a list on friday night of all the X-books and what was collected in this format. Ill post tonight when I get home.

Very short run but I absolutely loved the moon Apocalypse story. Calling it part of Simonson's run though is being generous because I think it was plotted by by Lee and Portacio and scripted by Claremont and had a ton of Cable back story.

I think I'm leaving out an Iceman story as well but I think that was only scripted by Simonson.

Funny that I think Portacio's really early work here was the best his art ever looked.

I couldn't remember who scripted that, so my apologies. But I looked and it seems like pretty much that entire run is going to be in the Lee/Claremont omnibus 2, which makes sense now that you mention the creative team.

I liked Portacio's work in Uncanny and even early Wetworks (before his sister's illness and then his coma). I don't know if my artistic tastes changed or his art changed, but his post coma stuff seems marred by really huge necks and odd faces.

No need to apologize, I just remember that run pretty well because I loved that arc and it was pretty much the end of the original X-Factor run which I had collected from the start.

I know that Marvel has published the original X-Factor run in their Essentials line... just checked Amazon.... and it looks like there are four volumes that cover #1-59. Wouldn't be surpised to see more volumes covering #60+ (the Portacio Apocalypse storyline).

And, yes, X-Factor was, in its original run (#1-70) was a reunion of the original five X-Men, and the third ongoing X-Family book. Hard to believe there was a time when it just Uncanny X-Men and New Mutants!

Re: Reading X-Men! Tips and Advice?

I knew X-Factor was always the original X-men (thanks to Busiek's Jean Grey idea) but while I enjoyed the book, I felt like they were always sidetracked by something... the original Mutant Hunter gimmick, then the proliferation of side characters (Rusty and Skids and Rictor and Leech and Artie), but I felt like the Portacio run made it more action oriented and more like the X-men title... probably because of Claremont's involvement.

Still, I wouldn't mind an X-factor omnibus... I'm a little surprised they haven't been collected in anything but Essentials (and crossover hardcovers), since New Mutants and Excalibur both have color (non HC) collections.

ok, so this is what has been collected in the oversized, Omnibus height HCs for the other X-books.

It looks like they could do a 28 issue X-factor omni, skipping the Mutant Massacre, Fall of the Mutants, Inferno, and Acts of Vengence issues and include 1-8, 12-17, 27-32, and 41-48. then we would have all the way to 50 one way or another...or, if they included 51-62, it would be a 40 issue omnibus, on par with Simonson's Thor, and it would collect the entire run before Havok takes over as leader...I'd buy it for sure.

Don't remember Fatal Attractions. Peter's sister dies during this correct? Damn, I'm really drawing a blank, I remember X-Force #25 and X-Men #25 but for the life of me can't remember the over arching story.

I think Illyana's death was right before this. All I remember from this one was that it involved the Acolytes, Colossus for whatever reason joins them (I think due to Illyana's death, the bump on his head from the X-cutioner in that annual, and poor writing), and
Spoiler:
Magneto rips the adamantium out of Wolverine, then gets mindwiped.
Oh yeah, and holograms... are they reprinting those in a HC?

I'm still going through the Claremont/Lee/Silvestri (with "bonus" issue by Liefeld) first omnibus... I know people here liked that Reavers/Australia era, but man I'm having trouble getting through it. Just made it past the issue where the temporary X-men defended Muir Island (Sunder, Banshee, She-Hulked Polaris, Amanda Sefton, who then need to get bailed out by Freedom Force and Forge). The X-men pretty much disappeared from this book (I still don't understand what happened to Longshot), it became a Woliverine one-shot with Rick Leonardi art, and then this? Ugh. I had thought Claremont had regressed in his Sovereign Seven days, but I think I forgot how bad this was. Perhaps what I remember most about this run are the covers, mainly because I had these issues and they were, at the time, worth money due to early Lee art and the first appearance of asian Psylocke, Gambit, and Jubilee (this is probably why I never re-read them until now).

Also, I like Silvestri but the every-two-weeks thing must have killed his quality or something. He went on to Wolverine after this, right, with Lee full time on X-men?

Loved the Outback days, but it falls apart when you get to the Muir Island/Shadow King(never could stand him as a villain), issues. Still one of my favorite covers all time is the crucified Wolverine cover of 248(?) Maybe it was the fact that the X-Men cheated death but one by one they all had to pay it back.

Fatal Attractions was the pinnacle of my comic book youth, since the thought of Wolverine getting his adamantium pulled out was pretty devastating and amazing to me at the time. And yeah, Illyana dies in the issue before of Uncanny (#303, with #304 being the Fatal Attractions issue).

I hate those large hard covers these days though. I'd rather just have a paperback reprint of it.

What? Bite your tongue! Though I tend to agree, not everything needs a hardcover.

So just how bad was X-necrosha? Comixology is having a 99c sale on it, and I've been in a digital buying mood (but I think most of the X-force issues are included in the hardcover I ordered).

I'm enjoying Wolverine and the X-Men. I loved the little chart of the teachers and students at the school, and Iceman got to do some cool stuff in issue #2.

Re: Reading X-Men! Tips and Advice?

My X-Men reading continues! Thanks to the last nick and dent sale from TFAW, I picked up Marvel Masterworks TPB's of The X-Men volume 1 and 2, and Uncanny X-Men volume 1. I just finished reading The X-Men, and finally(!) read Giant Sized X-men #1.

It was really interesting finally reading the first 20 issues of the X-Men. I've seen that famous cover so many times, but i've never read those old stories before. A lot of stuff is somewhat dated, especially the devices, clothing, and dialog, but its even more interesting to see everything that is still relevant. I never realized how many characters and villains are there from the get go as someone who's really only read some 80's to present day stories. Watching Magneto, Blob, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Juggernaut, and the Sentinels look largely the same as they do 50 years later is pretty cool, despite the simplicity of the stories and the somewhat silly exposition and banter of those days. I never realized Vanisher in one of the early stories is the same character I would read later on as a part of X-Force too.

Overall, they were an entertaining read but not something I imagine I would revisit regularly given the pretty basic stories and relatively tame action and use of powers. I'll probably buy the other Masterworks volumes in paperback eventually, as i'm interested in seeing the debut of Havoc and Polaris.

Giant Sized X-Men... now there we go! I still have the rest of the Uncanny volume to read, but the tone, artwork, and action is close to the X-Men I know and love and grew up with. Love the artwork, good introduction to the new characters that I still enjoy today, and i'm finally going to get to read all the stuff Claremont put together. I've read stories like Dark Phoenix and Days of Future Past individually, but i'm excited to read them in order. I went and ordered volumes 2 and 3 from Amazon and plan to plow through them in the next week while i'm stuck at home since i'll be getting surgery for a hernia tomorrow.

This is fun, my thread has lasted me a good while

Most of the fun of Claremont is reading his stuff in order and seeing the ground work he laid for things that wouldn't come up until years later.

Or would never get resolved at all..

Finally read X-men Schism. Like a lot of the major crossovers, I think it's pretty obvious that they had a status quo they wanted to get to and filled in issues to try to get there, and I wasn't buying the whole reason behind the split between Cyclops and Wolverine from the very beginning. Plus, the choice for "big bad" is cringe-worthy, IMHO.
