Ha, Byrne was inking himself IIRC.

D'oh! Maybe he has lost a step.

I know he is ornery when it comes to interviews or discussing any comic book history nowadays.

I’d say Byrne inking himself is not great. He needs someone like Terry Austin to make him pop.

Byrne was always a good draftsman, but he also had a few awkward facial expressions and hand gestures that he seemed to use over and over again that always kind of bugged me.

I love Byrne but I guess everyone has their own favorites.

My only issue with Byrne was that he could never draw a kid correctly. All of his children have toddler bodies with 40-year-old faces. This even bugged me when reading as a kid.

The funniest comment I've ever heard about Byrne drawing kids is that he makes them look like Gore Vidal.

Also, how in the hell is JRJR given the Amazing Spider-Man book? His art is atrocious. Just plain ugly. People can say what they want, but I would hire Rob Liefeld for ASM before giving work to JRJR.

Re: Rob Liefeld - Worst comic book artist ever?

Whoa!

I loved John Romita Jr. in the 80s, Mohawk Storm era X-Men. Ann Nocenti Daredevil. I even loved Star Brand. I liked his return to X-Men around issue 300, but it took some getting used to. At some point almost all his characters looked like they were made of over inflated balloons.

The art posted above is horrendous. The first Avengers pic looks like a Daniel Johnston album cover. The bottom pic looks like a free hand doodle done with a Marks-A-Lot magic marker by a high schooler. The Mary Jane...didn't there used to be an ad where you had to draw a turtle & mail it in to see if you had artistic talent? Yeah, it reminds me of that.

Do artists still work on paper or is it all on computers now?

I love that Gore Vidal line.

Agreed, I always thought that Byrne and Austin made a great team, same with Miller and Klaus Janson.

The pic of JRJR's Mary Jane isn't showing up for me.

The weirder thing about those panels... why not just reuse the panel, why redraw it but slightly worse?

Hmmmmm....I wonder what he means about his hand eye coordination?

I don't read them, I can't say I even flip through them if he did a Cable/Stryfe story I'd check it out.

Re: Rob Liefeld - Worst comic book artist ever?

I think he just means he's getting older, not that anything is necessarily happening to him right now (otherwise he'd make some kind of announcement about retiring from comics, it's not like drawing deadpool takes more coordination than other artwork). I still think many others (like Joe Kelly) contributed to making Deadpool more than just a Deathstroke/Spiderman clone, but I'm not going to lie I still love his New Mutants/X-Force run and he deserves credit for keeping some level of ownership over the characters.

Salty as fuck this guy. I bet he cried when he saw Todd reveal his latest Spawn and Todd figures.
