How pretty does Darkseid get?
(Should that have been in a spoiler?
)
It does seem more dynamic than the original TPB

Okay, I just looked again. I guess I didn't get a good look. All the gray, initially, made it look to me like it was just Darkseid around debris. I didn't realize that Legionnaires were standing around. Not as bad as I initially thought, but I still like the first one.

Both kinda ruin the big reveal of the storyline, but I guess like Empire Strikes Back, everyone know the "secret" by now. Any thoughts on the current LoS series? Or anyone know why they have both LoS and Adventure Comics running Legion stories side by side? I'm still really confused on continuity... I realize they wrote off the stuff like jetpacks as revisionist history, and this obviously takes place before v.4, but how do they reconcile stuff like Sensor Girl, Karate Kid, and Tyroc?

The LOSH is one of the greatest concepts in mainstream comics IMO. It sucks that there's been such long stretches of runs where even die-hard fans give up.
I really dig the original silver age stories with Superboy. I like the old fashioned sci-fi of that era.
I also really liked Shooter's last run on LOSH. It was a really fun book, even without Superboy. It felt like Star Trek: The Next Generation but with more action.
I've heard lots of bad things about LOSH, but it's hard to believe that with all the possibilities of that concept, that there'd be such bad storylines.
I remember trying Legionnaries awhile back but it wasn't too good.

Re: The One and Only Legion of Super-Heroes thread
I was a big fan in the late '70s and early '80s. Some lean years for the main series, sure, but I read a lot of the '60s stuff, and the Levitz-Giffen era was fun. I agree that watching the Great Darkness story unfold was better than getting it spoiled by the cover. When I got back into comics a few years ago, I was very surprised to see how the Legion had been continually rebooted, like they'd lost their way. I've picked up a few of the newer trades and enjoyed some of them, and just got two of the new Shooters and m looking forward to those.

Currently Adventure Comics is running flashback stories with Clark as Superboy. LOSH takes place after the Action Comics story and Legion of 3 Worlds, with the classic, older legion. Soon Adventure will be written and drawn by Phil Jimenez and he will focus on Legion Rookies.

Thanks for the clarification, stingermck, I've been picking up LOSH and Adventure (when it started up the Legion main stories) but I'm still way behind.
I hate to say it, but I dislike the new costumes, and the art on the last issue I read (issue 3) was uneven at best.

They collected the previous feature in Adventure, Superboy, so I'm sure they'll collect this one, and maybe even include the Legion backup that was in the Superboy issues (in which case I should've skipped collecting it monthly)

Re: The One and Only Legion of Super-Heroes thread
So I read the first installment of the early Legion in Adventure... ugh. A retelling of the origin story, but instead of just showing us, it's Brande narrating. Since when did R.J. Brande talk like English (or Interlac) was his second language? It was like the whole point of the story was to retcon or reestablish stuff (the reason why Brande left Durla, how he became infatuated with superheroes, why he could no longer shapeshift, the original story of how he made his fortune reigniting stars instead of the later stargate stories, why Durlans took that two-antenna form, the whole Durlan from L.E.G.I.O.N. stuff is thrown out, etc.). I really didn't see the point, as new fans would have no idea what was going on, and it's not exactly inspiring for new fans.
Then that Atom backstory pretty much negates a multi-issue arc in Batgirl the same month that that arc concluded. Thanks DC editorial!
Anyone enjoying the new LOSH (their own book or Adventure)? I liked Geoff John's take on the Legion ok, but I didn't realize they'd be dragged into War of the Supermen (which I didn't read) so maybe I need to go back and read that stuff so that it all ties together. I appreciate them trying to bring back the "real" Legion and reconciling all the other stuff, but I have vague recollections of the JLA/JSA lightning arc and the Countdown arc with Karate Kid that still make no sense to me.

Re: The One and Only Legion of Super-Heroes thread
I got this for Christmas

I flipped through it a bit and was surprised to find it unfamiliar to me. Because I have most of the DC Archives, I figured I'd read most of the era Showcase is covering, but maybe I skipped some Archives or these weren't covered.

Unrelated to the post immediately above this one, I got the hardcover Great Darkness Saga. My first issue of the LSH, I believe (long ago now) was #297 (I think). So I didn't read the Great Darkness Saga until the TPB and I didn't read the issues by Levitz that preceded it.
My bro bought me the hardcover for Christmas. I'm glad to finally read the issues I was so curious about, but man, I don't think it's just me looking back on it, but Levitz's writing immediately preceding Great Darkness was nowhere near as good as it eventually got. In context, the Great Darkness was a big step forward.

I've also been reading that era (the era right after Great Darkness) and I don't think that era is all that great. Of course, in my in my mind I always considered the new additions of Polar Boy, Quislet, Tellus, Magnetic Kid, Sensor Girl etc. as the b-team. I'm not sure why, since the rest of the Legion was still pretty much intact... maybe it was because I got really tired of the whole "who is Sensor Girl" mystery. I was also very confused at the time with the whole Laurel Kent thing and the "Darkseid kidnaps one of the twins and creates Validus... or something" plot from Legionnaires 3. Oh, and Super Powers Tyr... ugh.

Re: The One and Only Legion of Super-Heroes thread
I think it's true that one reason Great Darkness stood out so much was that it was a relatively humdrum period for the Legion. I was a steady reader at the time but really hadn't been wowed by anything since the Khund-Dominator war untill Great Darkness hit. If the new HC has some of the peripheral issues, I might pick it up even despite the relative mediocrity.

I just read the 2008 Shooter trades and thought they were fun. I'm not exactly sure what comes next TPB-wise or if everything gets rebooted anyway. I believe I have some of the TPBs that precede these (Supergirl, Dominator war) so I'll have to dig those up.

The Shooter/Manapul era ended abruptly so that Johns could unite everything with Legion of 3 Worlds and bring back the original Legion (well, the original Legion from a certain point in time). So read John's Superman and the Legion of Superheroes trade, then Legion of 3 Worlds. Other stories also tie into the Legion, including the JLA/JSA Lightning Saga crossover, parts of the terrible, terrible Countdown to Infinite Crisis, and parts of the World of Krypton series, mostly the Mon-el issues. This leads into the stories in Adventure Comics and the current LoSH series.

I was going to buy both Superman/LSH and Legion of 3 Worlds since they're both around 10 bucks, but I just bought Superman in the hopes that 3 Worlds might show up in my Gold Box quick picks afterward. No dice on that one yet, but I just got The Curse there at an extra 5% off!

Yeah, I resisted buying the new Invincible and Walking Dead TPBs as soon as they came up for pre-order, figuring I had enough purchase history there to hit my Quick Picks eventually. It took a little waiting, but they did make it.
I haven't tried your trick, but I like it.
EDIT: And they just got me again with the New Teen Titans Omnibus

Re: The One and Only Legion of Super-Heroes thread
So the new, post Flashpoint, not-a-reboot-kinda DC universe will have two Legion titles:
Legion Lost:
Seven heroes from the 31st century have traveled back to the present day. Their mission: Save their future from total annihilation. When the future tech they brought with them fails, they find themselves trapped in a nightmarish world and an ultimate struggle to survive. LEGION LOST #1 will be written by Fabian Nicieza and illustrated by Pete Woods, fresh off an acclaimed run of Action Comics.
LoSH:
In the 31st century, the Legion of Superheroes is reeling from the loss of seven of their finest — and trying desperately to keep their youngest recruits alive against a series of terrible new threats. LEGION OF SUPERHEROES #1 will be written by fan-favorite Legion writer Paul Levitz and illustrated by Francis Portela.

It seems to me that these are perhaps the least impacted titles out of the new DCU (besides Johns' GL and Morrison's Batman) and as I'm not a huge fan of the chagnes in general, and the Legion has been rebooted three or four times already, this makes me happy enough to consider supporting these two titles monthly. Legion Lost seems like a recycled story (the post Zero Hour Legion had a team lost in the current day during Final Night, and recently a group of Legionnaires were undercover in the Superman titles), but Nicieza and Woods is a solid combo. The LoSH title continues Levitz's run, and Portela was the artist on the excellent Legion of Super Villains one-shot. Costumes are changed, but I didn't really like the recent costumes anyway. I'm happy to get two Legion titles after I feared the worst for Adventure, and I'm also happy that Legion Lost wasn't the only Legion title offered. Not a huge fan of Chameleon Boy being able to turn his arm into a weapon, but we'll see. Also, one of the new recruits from Adventure look to be in the book.
Thoughts?
