Re: Spiderman Omnibus

I have been collecting these as they come out and was figuring they were going to chronicle every major Spider-Man appearance or at least every major SM title all encompassed in each volume. I was hoping for chronological releases of issues such as Marvel Team-up and eventually Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man, Web Of Spider-Man, etc.

We are now on a Volume 5 release. Appears these are just mainly including only The Amazing SM series. Anyone read anything about this or was also hoping for the same thing I was hoping for?

That's exactly what I was hoping for but I don't believe that is in Marvel's plans. They are collecting all of Amazing. They have put out Spectacular and Web in various Epic trades, I believe.

Omnibus at both Marvel and DC have been very inconsistent in regards to chronology. Both companies have focused themselves in getting out major storylines or doing artist/writer themed ones. The recent Spider-Man Omnibus re-releases have focused on the either going chronologically by Amazing Spider-Man (vol 1-5 omnibus) and including some stories here and there from other sources like Marvel Treasury Edition, issues of Nova and Marvel Special Edition. Then there's the McFarlane/Michelinie Omnibus re-release that focuses on the Venom storyline. The popularity of Omnibuses (at least the Marvel ones) leads me to believe that they will tackle some of the Web of Spider-Man and Spectacular Spider-Man stuff at some point, but there are so many forgettable stories on both of those runs that I wonder if Marvel believes that's worth the effort in collecting those issues.

Re: Spiderman Omnibus

Marvel is usually pretty good about labeling things properly, so since the omnibus line was The Amazing Spider-Man it wasn't expected to collect any other Spidey titles. There's certainly enough of Marvel Team-Up and The Spectacular Spider-Man in the Marvel Masterworks line that they could start issuing them in omnis as well (if you aren't aware, the Masterworks releases are generally when Marvel does their restoration work), but I would still expect the series to be collected separately.
The main exceptions are when the omnibus collects work by a creator, like how the Spider-Man by Roger Stern omni included his Amazing and Spectacular issues, or by storyline, like the Clone Saga and Ben Reilly omnis.

Re: Spiderman Omnibus

I know there were some solid stories in Spectacular over the years, but is anyone really clamoring for a Web of Spider-Man omnibus?

Generally speaking, I think the Epic Collection is the line that really prioritizes completeness. While there have been any number of random omnibuses due to movie tie-ins and what have you, the main priority of that line is collecting the flagship titles, runs by major creators and events.
I can see an argument for the omnibuses being more complete, but at a certain point you start to water down the product with subpar material.

Somewhat related, I happen to collect x-men omnibuses and the early volumes only collect the main x-men title because that's all there was. Later volumes (which are more event focused) include long runs of X-Factor and New Mutants. I'm reading through my books right now and am at Fall Of The Mutants and all I want to do is read X-Men, but I'm hung up on Louise Simonson New Mutants. Ugh. I mean I could skip those issues because they're irrelevant to the x-men strand of the story, but they're in the book, so I feel compelled. It's basically brought my reading to a complete halt.

Re: Spiderman Omnibus

I've got the first 4 Amazing Spider-Man Omnibi, and I love them! I won't be buying the 5th, however. I've got all of those issues collected in the Masterworks editions, so I'm pretty much set from there.

Re: Spiderman Omnibus

So, The Amazing Spider-Man Volume 6 omnibus just came out and they did the most bizarre thing.

It covers the following issues: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (1963) #181-205 & ANNUAL (1964) #13, THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL (1979) #1 and WHAT IF? (1977) #1, #7, #19 and material from WHAT IF (1977) #8

They just put out a Spectacular Spider-Man Volume 1 Omnibus not long ago which include the Annual for that series. They have already shown they are not going to collect every Spider-Man appearance or issue in order (which is what I had originally hoped for) so why in the world would they waste space and put in an annual that has nothing to do with this omnibus and was already in a related recently released omnibus???

Annoying.

And by the way, Web Of Spider-Man Volume 1 Omnibus is coming this August.

That seems weird if there wasn’t a story tie-in.

They've been tossing in semi-related issues haphazardly in many of their recent omnibuses. I think it's about padding the page counts so they can squeeze out a few more volumes from the hardcore collectors who buy everything. They've been even worse with the X-Men omnibuses.

Marvel screwed up the Black Costume Saga omnibus by omitting a critical page. Instead of fixing it they sent people who purchased it a PDF of the missing page.

Re: Spiderman Omnibus

Per Comics.org SSM Annual 1 does indeed continue the story from ASM Annual 13. The SSM omnibus also included ASM Annual 13.
What bugs me about ASM omnibus 6 is how small it is. The first four omnis included about 3.5 MMWs, the fifth contained 3, and this one isn't even three full MMWs.If they kept up with 3.5 per omni, omni 6 would have included up to MMW 21 and ASM 223, which would have dovetailed right into the Stern omnibus.

The Omnibus that covers 1974-75 is missing the Giant-Size Spiderman issues.

My god that would have pissed me off.

Yep, you are correct. Actually I looked back and that PPSSM omnibus actually included the ASM Annual in it as well.

I wish they had just gone with printing every Spider-Man appears in order. Then no duplication and you could just sit down and read all the stories back-to-back without having to have multiple issues scattered across various volumes.

Marvel has become quite greedy in the past couple years with their hardcover publishing practices. Basically eliminating new deluxe hardcovers in favor of very small omnibuses, all of which still have $100 list prices despite low page counts. Not to mention publishing errors they basically ignore or refuse to correct, while also lowering the print quality of their omnibuses.

That's because Giant-Size Spider-Man complemented Marvel Team-Up, not Amazing Spider-Man. They were included in the MTU MMWs, so if they are going to appear in an omni, it will be an MTU omni.

I'm not an expert on Spider-Man, but could you even successfully map such a book? What does "in order" even mean? Published order? That wouldn't lend itself to a very good reading experience. And I don't think you could really collect by story order because the titles weren't really coordinated that meticulously. There was a loose continuity between books, but I didn't think you could ever truly make sense of them as one big story. And it just gets more complicated once more titles get added.

Got to disagree with you on it not being a very good reading experience. "In order" would be published order. I did it as a kid and it wasn't complicated.

Why would published order by an issue? Anyway, doesn't really matter as they ain't gonna do it unless they get all the omnibuses out and then want to find a new way to milk the cow.

DC did it for a minute with their (since abandoned) Chronicles series for various super-heroes. It was great until they quit.

I'd like to see an Omnibus of Robert Kirkman's run on MTU, with the story he wrote for Spider-Man Unlimited included.

Re: Spider-Man Omnibus

Glad to hear this. But we already know the Saturday Night Live issue is going to be a problem. Any other rights issues for Marvel Team-up? I can't remember if Conan, Master Of Kung Fu or any others that seem to drift in and out on rights, were in various issues.

And I was wrong with my old post about the Web Of Spider-Man Omnibus being released in August. It was actually released this week.

Three different covers:

I love me some Zeck, but the Vess cover speaks to me more for Web. Middle cover is Laroque.

I plan to probably collect all of the three main titles until they go up to McFarlane. I have his omnibus and will finish with him. They rest of the stuff I can just read online if I want to. I like having the stuff I grew up with to read physically.

Still wish they had gone through every appearance chronologically though, dammit.

Re: Spider-Man Omnibus

It looks like that omnibus doesn't include Giant-Size Spider-Man #3, with Doc Savage (it includes the first 3 MMWs, and that was in MMW 3). I remember when the MMW was released, it was mentioned that it might be the only time it was reprinted.
Other than that, the only issue skipped in the MMWs is the one with Red Sonja (even the SNL issue was released, even though it didn't seem like it was going to be)

Re: Spider-Man Omnibus

A few more coming up, Web of Spider-Man 2, Brand New Day 3 and Amazing Spider-Man 7

ASM 7 is even smaller than 6 was, but I guess they did it that way so that they wouldn't overlap with the Stern omnibus.
