Planet Hulk....damn it is good.

I just finished reading all of the released Planet Hulk books and I am completely blown away. It was such a fantastic read. The story is genius. The Hulk is the man. I am looking forward to World War Hulk, but to be honest I would be happy if Hulk would stay longer on Sakaar. If you haven't read this arc...do so immediately.

I'm actually saving the issues to read in soon. Everyone keeps going on about how great the story is, so I look forward to reading it.

Hulk is a character I really enjoy, but he hasn't really been in too many great stories recently. For good Hulk I've turned to the Ultimates. Glad, to see Big Green is getting some shine again.

I have loved it too. Especially after the long dry spell while Bruce Jones was writing it. It's just an all-out BIG adventure, with Hulk in full kickass mode. I seriously cannot wait for him to SMASH the rest of the Marvel Universe when he comes back to earth. Especially Tony Stark and Reed Richards. They deserve it. The jerks...

I asked this in the other thread, but didn't get an answer. Has there been any trades for this storyline?

I stopped reading Hulk when Peter David left the book. I started picking up the trades of the newest volume and they were OK. I decided to pick up the Hulk on a monthly basis after Planet Hulk was announced and was very, very happy I did. The story has been great and this is one book that I can't wait for. I'm looking forward to World War Hulk too.

The only TPB I have seen so far, is the Planet Hulk Prelude, which I think is just the first few issues leading up to him actually landing on the planet.

Yup, I remember when Jones first took over Hulk it was the hottest the comic was in years, & his first story was pretty good, but then holy shit, did it go no where, with nothing ever happening.

IMO this is one of the greatest runs on a superhero comic in maybe decades. There are moments & panels during Planet Hulk where I'm just like "damn, that is bad-ass". Just the fact that Civil War has consumed Marvel & this comic has no part in it, & a writer that is truly attempting something unique with a very mainstream character (how often do you see that anymore). Pak has flat out put his stamp on the mythos of this comic book. Plus, usually when you get a classic story like this, you think the follow up can't be as good, they are just milking everything now, but how sweet does World War Hulk sound.

So how many issues of Planet Hulk have been published so far? (or how far behind am I?)

Yeah, I collected the entire run of Hulk while Jones was on it. The first story was great, and granted, there was a lot of misleading and misdirection, but I still found a lot of the stories to be really enjoyable. The covers were always great and the art was fantastic issue-to-issue. What really irritated me is how the story just totally petered out at the end with no resolution whatsoever. Jones really dropped the ball with Hulk. David's brief 5-issue stint did nothing for me.

Plus, usually when you get a classic story like this, you think the follow up can't be as good, they are just milking everything now...
That pretty much sums up my general feelings of the big two for the last few decades.

Man, I just read the most recent issue (forgot what # it is) & in a epic story that has been amazing from the start, this was IMO the single best issue so far. About the most emotional Hulk comic I think I ever read & what an awesome last couple of pages. Also the art was phenomenal, the story is much better when Pagulyan (Sp?) is doing the art.

Oh damn, I'm really far behind, perhaps I'll go see if the first arc is available in TPB yet.

The trade will be coming out on June 20, according to Amazon.

EDITED TO ADD: but the PRELUDE TO PLANET HULK (collecting #88-91) is coming out soon, if it's not already out.

Just noticed the oversized HC solicited in Previews. Can someone give me a spoiler free reason for why this storyline is so cool?

How good/important is the Prelude stuff? I'm planning to pick up the Planet Hulk HC -- should I pick up the Prelude HC too, or is it skippable?

If the prelude stuff is what happens before he sets foot on the Planet, I think it's pretty skippable. It just tells you the reason why he was sent off into space I believe, and you would be just as fine asking someone what happens (or learning through the Planet Hulk story).

Simply put, it's one of the most innovative, foward-thinking stories Marvel has done on a superhero comic in literally decades. Take it from someone who reads just about every superhero comic being published. This is the type of story that is rarely done. With every seemingly every single Marvel comic being bogged down with Civil War crap &/or mainstream comics where superheroes fight the same villains over & over & over (how many times is DD going to fight Kingpin or Bullseye etc etc, how many freakin' Hulk comics can play out the same old boring Jekyl/Hyde story), this is the total opposite.

For me the single hardest thing to do with a mainstream comic book character, especially the truly iconic ones like Hulk, is for the creators to do something different. That is the MAIN reason to be reading this story. Planet Hulk has literally created an entire new Universe for this character, with completely new villains, a complete new supporting cast (which has been maybe the best surprise of this story). On top of all that Hulk is put in a position he has never been in before, truly making every issue a unique experience never before seen in this comic. AND surprisingly, the follow up story in World War Hulk looks just as good, seeing the ramifications of Planet Hulk brought down upon the Marvel Universe.

The bottom line is, if you are comic book fan that actually wants to see new ideas brought to an established characters, then this should be a must read story.

Yeah, what Sessa said is one way to look at it. For me though, it's great because it's what the Hulk should be. Big set piece, in your face, take no prisoners, action.

It's like the most satisfying blockbuster you can imagine. I read the whole run in one sitting and it was like Gladiator, Jurassic Park, and Some Good SciFi Movie all wrapped in one.

I agree completely...

as a matter of fact, it would be a GREAT idea IMO to make another Hulk film with this as the basis. Simply change the marvel heroes who sent him into space into the US government, and it's ready to go.
