A couple of the Cerebus pages probably look a little fuzzy -- this isn't because of the scanner. They're framed and the scanner couldn't focus properly. http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryD...asp?GCat=19868 |
BTW, anyone not amazed at how much original art costs for the popular artists these days? I simply had to cut back because I was blowing wads of money on a few pages at a time, and was getting nutty, especially with the auctions, and sometimes I did feel like the bids were getting pumped up by phantom bidders.

Yeah, that is what is keeping me out of the game.
However, I will be dropping a few duckets to get a piece or two from a few of my favorite artists. I would be elated to have a nice sketch or three from Bruce Timm, Darwyn Cooke, and Terry Moore. I figure I'll save up and splurge on a few pieces from those guys. |
Well, I got the Mustek A3 scanner from Amazon today, got it hooked up, even though the install CD was a bit FUBAR'd when it came to loading up extraneous programs that didn't even ship with the scanner (i.e. Photoshop), so I ended up canceling out of the installation of the remainder of programs, but thankfully, it did install the scanner drivers, and the scanning program. Once I hooked up the scanner to the PC, things worked okay.
Had to do some fixing of the brightness and contrast in post, but came up with a decent compromise (scanned in using the fine mode, which resulted in large file size and resolution 2195x3337, but then I resized it to 1024x1557. Tried scanning in normal mode, but there was too much stepping in the curves, so I went with the fine mode, and then resized for a more smoother curves. Hope to do about 10/day until I'm done. Stay tuned... |
Finally got almost all of the pages scanned (over 50 pieces).
Here's a ComicArtFan Link to my collection, currently only Ed Benes and Gary Frank pieces have been uploaded. I'll try to get the rest of them uploaded by the end of the weekend or early next week. |
I love original art. I prefer to buy commissions of Dejah Thoris, but every now and then I'll pick up a page. Here's a link to my art images.
Also, here's a forum you might all enjoy. Bunch of great comic art fans with links to some amazing pieces. Tell 'em Powajemes sent you. |
I have quite a few commissions and original pages. My pride and joy though is a page from issue 3 of Faust.

Here are some of my better/favorite pieces. I don't have a scanner big enough, so I had to just take regular pics of them.

Glad to see that the scanner worked out for you. I knew it'd be a bit odd to get installed, but all in all it seems to work pretty well.
|
Yeah, it's like the scanner's installation CDs were cobbled together from a pile of other scanner CD packages.
|
Finally posted the rest of my art collection (link above in post #34).

Almost picked up a page of two from Civil War as Dexter Vines (inker) was at a 1-day comic convention, but I just couldn't pull the trigger (one page was $200 and the other one was $300), and went home with just a bunch of comics from the dollar bins.

I have a pretty substansial collection from a few years back. Lots of pages from the Marvel Transformers series, a few from Transformers: Generation 2 (including two covers) and a few Preacher pages. Most of them can be seen here:
http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=2075 Prices seemed to really skyrocket a few years ago, which is why I haven't picked anything up in at least two years. |
The wife's bought me a lot of commissions over the years, but this are the only pages I've gotten:
A page from Alias #20 by Micheal Gaydos: http://www.geocities.com/atxbomber/Gaydos-Alias-Art.jpg A page from Dark Days #1 by Ben Templesmith: http://www.geocities.com/atxbomber/t...th-art-big.jpg |
That Templesmith page is beautiful.
You know what i cant seem to find... What the Hells Travis Charest is doing lately! I heard he was doing a graphic novel in Britain, but i never heard anything else about it. I was going to purchase a couple things from Wildcats/Xmen a couple years ago, but they were wanting close to 1.3k for pages... I almost bought... I'm kicking myself now. lol |
Charest is supposedly working on some Metabaron project. Maybe we'll see it published in the 2010's...
|
I'm bumping this thread since it was mentioned in a newer thread...
The top piece is from an unknown artist, the middle is by Alex Robinson of Box Office Poison and Tricked fame, and the bottom piece is by Mike Wieringo and was purchased about two weeks before he passed away. Sigh. http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j3...a/IMG_0749.jpg This is a piece of original artwork by Gary Frank from Malibu Comics' Godwheel. http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j3...a/IMG_0750.jpg This is probably my favorite superhero piece of artwork. It's from Superman by Ed Mcguiness. I have a few other pages by Petter Pagge and Bob Fingerman but they aren't appropriate! http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j3...a/IMG_0747.jpg |
I decided to collect only Jean Grey art, to limit my spending...only one character. She's good to collect, because I get a loophole in my own rule with Marvel Girl, Classic X-Men Costume, Phoenix, Black Queen, Dark Phoenix, X-Factor Costume, Blue and Gold Jean, 1990s Jean, Godawful Striped Jean and even Here Comes Tomorrow Jean. I bend my rule to include Madelyne Pryor and the Goblin Queen. Genetically, they're the same.
I have a very limited number of pieces (roughly 20%) hosted on my website, but here are a few of my favorites of what I have showing: http://www.darkestphoenix.com/b796_3.JPG Dave Cockrum UXM 101 Cover Recreation http://www.darkestphoenix.com/images...Commission.JPG Frank Brunner Commission http://www.darkestphoenix.com/images...aelLinsner.jpghttp://www.darkestphoenix.com/images/LinsnerSketch.JPG Joseph Michael Linsner pieces I also have a few Randy Queen pieces I adore, a Hildebrandt brothers painting and a Jose Pimental/Roger Cruz watercolor that was reportedly part of their portfolio they applied to Marvel with. And, of course, a Greg Land Phoenix...those probably round out some of my 'favorites', I guess, but I've found I generally love all the work I buy...that's why I buy it. I'd love to get a Jim Lee and an Alex Ross someday, but they're both expensive and Ross hates painting Marvel, I've heard. |
I've got one piece of original comic art. It's a Dan Brereton piece from Legends of the Dark Knight #114:

Pardon my ignorance, but how do commissions work?

Cool! Are the prices all over the place? Do you get a lot of say in what the artist draws?
|
The prices are whatever the artist thinks their artwork/time is worth to them, plus their popularity factor.
You can always give as much input to how you want the drawing to look, whether they listen to your input is another thing... |
i have a few pages.
i have been lucky enough to get them for free. i have a friend who is an inker for dc and marvel. most recently he was on friendly spider-man. sometimes he asks me to put some pages up on ebay but they are usually pretty high. his concerns are more towards what he can get then what he will sell. |
