That list makes it a no-brainer.

But then, I've always had a DC bias. Can a Marvel fan provide a better Marvel list?

I still lean towards "other/independents".

Pretty much. DC was on a roll during the 80's for the most part. Even though I didn't like most of what Byrne did with Superman, the success of those stories put Superman back into the spotlight in the medium, for better or worse. Thankfully a couple of decades later, Mark Waid washed away all of Byrne's nonsense with Birthright.

I'd also add the following:

Batman: Year One
Superman: Exile
The Killing Joke
V for Vendetta
Arkham Asylum
