Comics Thread for September....

Since no one started one.

-----

Giantrobo muttering to himself....

So, I just got done reading the "last" Manhunter issue which was ok but a bit weird too. The final page was cool because that means even though this is the last issue of the current series, clearly Kate/Manhunter is about to play some important role in the DCU. Frankly, I had been hoping she would be snapped up by either the JL or the girls in BoP. I mean hell, they took in Shiva... She's a cool character and although DC has gone back to, "heroes don't kill"....Manhunter has yet to head in that direction. So perhaps that will add some balance, or at the very least high drama to the DCU. Plus, there’s still some more to her finding out about her super hero heritage.

The "Next" window on the last page said that something is coming in December so we'll see....

Why is Giantrobo in the corner talking to himself about comics?

Because all the Marvel zombies are having to wait until Sept. 20th for Civil War to come out so all the other 7 big Marvel books come out as well since they are tethered to the events in the upcoming issue of Civil War.

I didn't get my DCBS order today nor did I get a shipping notice last week when it was shipped on Thursday. And they haven't answered my emails about a return and replacement.

Lobo

I was always a huge fan of this Psycho. His appearances in Superman TAS and JL were all classic.

Here's some important news on an under-rated comics creator, cut-and-pasted from Newsarama:
Early this morning, the Texas home of award-winning writer/artist Lea Hernandez, my friend and co-creator of the graphic novel Killer Princesses, caught fire and burned. Half her house is now gone, and the rest is smoke-damaged. In addition, she lost at least six of her family’s beloved pets, two dogs and four cats. If you knew Lea, you’d know how devastating that is.

She’s lost a great deal of her family’s possessions, including irreplaceable art. She doesn’t yet know the full accounting of what’s been lost at this time.

Most know Lea as the brilliant creator of such works as Rumble Girls and Cathedral Child. She drew the Marvel Mangaverse Punisher book, and has drawn for Transmetropolitan, among many other accomplishments. She is also the co-founder and original editor for Girl-A-Matic, one of the most important venues for female-friendly comics created to date.

She’s also my friend, and it’s entirely possible I wouldn’t have a career in comics if she hadn’t asked me to write Killer Princesses for her to draw.

And finally, Lea is one of the last great firebrand hellraisers in comics.

Lea has two (wonderful, amazing) special needs children and right now they need a place to stay and some clothes to wear. More than that, they need
some help, and fast, in the form of donations to her paypal account. Lea’s a proud person so I’m going to ask FOR her. This is important, and a great chance to do a wonderful thing for a creator who has consistently enriched this industry we all love so much. Please, take a moment and send WHATEVER YOU CAN to Lea’s paypal account and help make this time a little bit less painful for someone who would do the same for you if the positions were reversed.

If you’re a retailer, I ask that you set up a donations jar. If you’re a creator, I ask you to think of how devastating this would be to your career and donate what you can. If you’re a reader, I’m asking you to take a moment and hit the paypal link. You’ll be doing something heroic and you’ll feel great about it, I promise.

Read what Lea had to post on a neighbor’s computer while wearing her pajamas at: Livejournal.com/users/divalea

Donate (PLEASE) to her paypal account at: [email protected]

Finally, if I understand the story correctly (as told to me by Lea’s good friend and current Girl-a-matic editor), it was Lea’s daughter hearing the smoke alarm that allowed the family to get out in time, so for God’s sake, do everyone you love a favor and CHECK YOUR SMOKE ALARMS.

Thank you so much for helping. Really, any amount you can send will make a difference. That’s all I can say.

Sincerely and gratefully,

Gail Simone

I thought Manhunter got a 5 issue extension? Could be what the "next" blurb refers to.

I got my DCBS shipment today and my Absolute Kingdom Come had quite a few pages stuck together, seemingly from wet ink. Anyone else have that problem? Not sure if DCBS would be willing to replace or not, as its not a major issue (it left some white marks/streaks near the bottom of quite a few pages though).

Anyone picking up Lost Girls? My shipment arrived from Amazon today (so technically, it could count as September).

I picked it up. I'm about halfway through. It's really good, both as a work of literature and as a work of porn.

Got my DCBS today too. They still aren't doing well with answering my emails. My old apt. number was on the label but the new one was inside on the packing list. I've emailed them about that. And they still won't answer me about a damaged return I made.

Wild about that fire. She made a blog entry at 3:30 am and was blogging from the neighbors at 8:30 am. Shows how fast everthing can change.

Sitting in a corner mumbling out loud with no one in the room...

For the 2nd time in as little as a year I had to take shit from someone (marvel fan) for being a DC fan. Both times occurred at "my" comic store. The first time it was some fat young kid who upon hearing that I only read DC said, "I hate DC". Thanks kid....

So today, I went to the same place just to say hi to the guys working there since I was close to the store. Well one of the guys working there was talking with some patron and when he (employee) saw me he asked me, "what major event is happening this week?". Thinking it was Marvel related I said, "If it's Marvel I have no idea". I didn't say this piss on Marvel nor did I say it in any way that would reveal my attitude towards Marvel...mind you, the employees know I don't read any Marvel shi-...stuff.

So this smartass guy he was talking too says, "He doesn't read any Marvel? And you let him in the store? Not a Marvel fan? And they let him in Sherman Oaks?" So I turned and pointed and said in a half joking half oh brother kinda way, "Do you guys see the kinda shit I have to put up with?" I mean WTF!?

SIGH----

Robo, be strong. They apparently don't know any better....

What's worse than being a comic book geek growing up? Being a DC fan in a Marvel world.

You know what's worse? Trying to post comments in a thread dominated by super hero nuts when what you really want to talk about is romance and manga and general fiction and indie books.

This is going to be a bad month for the LCBS. Whether you like Marvel or not, these books are big sellers and delaying the Civil War titles is going to really hurt the finances of the local store.

This was a very light week. You usually don't see weeks this bad unless it's a month with 5 Wednesdays, making one of them an off-week.

This also marks my first week that I no longer have a Previews order at my local shop. It's become too expensive to put in advance orders for books when you're putting in an order for the 3rd issue before the 1st one is even in your hands. I'm still buying my core books, but (and I know this is a taboo topic) for the rest I'm downloading first to check them out. If I like the book, I'll go buy the actual copy at the shop and I'll start picking it up every month. If I don't like it, I can just delete it from my HD with no money wasted.

I was just eyeing Love as a Foreign Language a few weeks ago. That book is going in my next major TPB order and I read True Story Swear to God and Strangers in Paradise (which I consider to be a love story) - so you aren't alone. Can you suggest some other titles like these (more interested in american/european books, but not totally against manga)?

I just read Antony Johnston's THREE DAYS IN EUROPE. It was really fun. I could see that being a movie, actually. More fun than serious, that's for sure.

There's another one I've read, but for the life of me it's eluding my memory...I'll post again later when I can see it on my shelf and remember the name.

LaaFL has an omnibus out now that collects the first three stories. That might be a good option for you. I love Kim's manga look for his characters. I wish it were a little slower read, but it's fun.

I picked up a bunch of 100 Bullets trades at the Chicago Con last month and just started V3 last night. It's a great read, but I have to wonder if the format will get a bit tired after a while?

Anybody up to date on the series and care to comment on that (without spoilers please)?

Chew, I've read all but the latest volume. I love the series, but it's sooooooo long. And with so many characters, I sometimes forget who is doing what to whom. Part of me actually envisions myself buying all the volumes and not reading until the series is complete. Then taking a weekend or two to blast through 'em all.

It's a great series. Worth picking up. But I'm not sure how to read it in a way I can enjoy it as much as I should.
