Comic Talk for MAY

I didn't see any discussion for may in comics from the search.

Well, the worse news possible. Johns will be off of titans for two issues getting ready for Crisis and while he is off it Gail Simone is taking over writing... but Rob Fuck'n Leifeld is doing the art. My god... WHY?!

So what are you reading in the world of comics in may?

Mhepburn20 05-04-05 01:44 AM

Yeah, Jack's back. Well I'll post more stuff later, but first and foremost the Alan Moore/Alan Davis trade paperback of Captain Briatin is coming out this Wed. It is one of the best marvel stories and I recommend it highly.

Jackskeleton 05-04-05 06:03 AM

Villians united comes out this week also. Crsis tie in that is actually looking to be like one of the better of the four mini's leading into it.

Giantrobo 05-04-05 06:52 AM

Jack!

Anyway, I'm reading all the "Crisis" stuff I can get my hands on. Somehow I missed OMAC now i'm on a list at a shop for the 2nd print and other "Crisis" stuff. I've decided to start reading JSA in addition to my regular stuff which includes Manhunter, Firestorm, JLE, JL:Classified :up:, and I guess the final Green Lantern:Rebirth issue is this month too right?

Chew 05-04-05 12:23 PM

If anybody has read OMAC, care to share a short review?

And how about Villains United. I have to wait 2 more weeks for that one. :(

Cartload 05-04-05 03:22 PM

I enjoyed Batman: Dark Detective #1. It's nice to read a modern comic where Batman isn't a complete sociopath. Villians was okay, but Day of Vengeance is the only Crisis title that I can really say I've liked a lot so far.

To othe best of my knowledg, this is spoiler-free (a quick review of OMAC 1):

Firstly, let me say I am a Marvel whore, so with the exception of Batman and Wonder Woman I recognized no one else from the OMAC introductory issue. That said, it did a great job of setting up the checkmate organization as well as the (presumably) leading lady, the Black Knight. There was a nice build explaining the differing opinions going on at Checkmate, and then the end of the issue had some incredibly vague references to OMAC and it's status.

The biggest problem I had as a newbie to the DC universe (I read Flash and Detective Comics, but otherwise...) was that I have no idea what OMAC is/was/will be and I got the the distinct impression it was some ominous threat I was meant to immediately recognize and go, "oooh." Sadly, this did not happen.

kevin75 05-04-05 10:05 PM

i just got my latest batch of trades in so i am starting to get through them. i just finished supreme power last night and i thought it was pretty good. very slow, but what else can you expect from marvel nowadays. however, this made me feel much better seeing as how i started the week out rereading dark knight strikes again. god that was worse the second time than it was the first.

Give it some slack. I was only the 1st issue....

I'm a DC Whore so I'm just a bit biased. :p

Mhepburn20 05-04-05 10:25 PM

Actually I did enjoy the issue and look forward to reading all the crisis minis. Sorry if my review comes off a bit harsh.

Did you read the $1 Countdown comic? OMAC was in that. From what I know, it seems like there's been a couple of incarnations of OMAC in the past, but I believe they weren't in continuity. Although I'm not a DC guy so I could be completely wrong about that.

Rogue588 05-05-05 12:08 AM

Was there ever a hardcover reprinting of Marvel's Star Wars run?

Chew 05-05-05 06:22 AM

Thanks for all the OMAC feedback. I guess I'll have to get that after all. :)

On the other hand, maybe I won't.

The only place I can find a copy is eBay and I'm not paying those kind of prices. But, it already looks like a 2nd printing will be done. Anybody know when that comes out?

Not a hardcover, but Dark Horse recently reprinted the whole run in a series of seven TPBs:

One of the first comics I ever owned was the Seven Samurai rip-off from Star Wars #8 (though I didn't know it was a Seven Samurai rip-off until years later).

The scoop on OMAC:

In 1974, Jack Kirby created OMAC. Set just before the Great Disaster in the futuristic 1980s, it's protaganist was Buddy Blank. The mysterious Global Peace Agency knew that the Great Disaster was coming and wanted to prevent it. So they built a satelite called Brother Eye. From space, Brother Eye beamed energy down which transformed Buddy Blank into the super strong, super tough One Many Army Corps -- OMAC. Brother Eye also communicated with Buddy, telling him who to fight, giving him information about them, etc. OMAC lasted for 8 issues; it was unsuccessfully revamped in the early 90s by John Byrne.

OMAC was later revealed to be the grandfather of Kamandi, the Last Boy on Earth, and the Great Disaster of OMAC's book was revealed to be the same Great Disaster fo Kamandi's book, the Atomic Knights, and Hercules Unbound. But that's all comic book nerdiness that probably won't play into the current revamp of OMAC.

Here's a picutre of OMAC in all his mohawked glory:

bishop2knight 05-05-05 03:53 PM

I didn't like the art in OMAC while I was flipping through it, so I chose not to buy it. I did, however, pick up VILLAINS.

If you haven't read the original graphic novel, FILLER, you should. If you like SIN CITY (I hate to make the comparison, but here I am doing it anyway) you'll like this book.

Dmacsg1 05-05-05 04:45 PM

So far we have got OMAC, Day of Vengeance and Villians United with the Rann/Thanagar war coming next week. I have enjoyed the first three greatly. I thought it interesting that the one series that I thought I would enjoy the least ( Day of Vengeance) turns out to be the best of the lot so far although the Rann/ Thanagar war my change my mind! It is good to be a DC fan right now!!!

Take care all!!

I had the first advance review of it anywhere over at Brokern Frontier.

You can read my spoiler free review here.

I've been diggin' the hell out of all the Countdown stuff, DC is just kicking all kinds of ass right now. I can't believe you didn't like the art on OMAC JP? I think Saiz has been doing some awesome stuff on Manhunter.

I'm WAY behind in reading a lot of books, I get around 80 different monthlies not counting mini-series.

But here is what I'll be picking up this coming Wed.

ACTION COMICS #827 - I think this is the first Byrne issue. Byrne should not be allowed to draw comics anymore.

ADAM STRANGE #8 - WARNING!! Read this issue BEFORE reading Rann/Thanagar War #1 for thos that are getting all the Countdown stuff.

AQUAMAN #30 - Yes I read Aquaman, so what. . you wanna fight about it?

ASTONISHING X-MEN #10 - The only X-book worth reading.

BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL #101

BREACH #5 - BUY THIS BOOK PEOPLE. DC should be praised for putting out unique books like this.

CAPTAIN AMERICA & THE FALCON #14 - Yet another last issue for a Priest monthly

CONAN & THE JEWELS OF GWAHLUR #2

DESOLATION JONES #1 - Ellis plus JH Williams, how can anyone not buy this.

EXCALIBUR #13 - I really have no clue why I'm getting this. But those interested in House of M, this is the prequel issue.

FABLES #37 - As good as anything being published.

FANTASTIC FOUR #526 - Despite the trainwreck that the movie will be, the comic has been amazing the past few years.

FRIDAY THE 13TH #1 - Worth giving a shot since it is an Avatar book.

GOTHAM CENTRAL #31 - Best Batman comic ever.

GREEN ARROW #50 - I would have dropped this as soon as Winnick took over if it wasn't one of my favorite characters.

GREEN LANTERN REBIRTH #6 - I'll believe it when I see it.

JSA #73 - The most consistantly great team-book of the past 10 years.

LIVING WITH ZOMBIES #2 - First issue was pretty good.

MAJESTIC #5 - Worth buying just for the brilliant Googe art.

MAN WITH THE SCREAMING BRAIN #1 - How can you pass up a comic written & created by Bruce Campbell.

MARVEL TEAM-UP #8 - This has been such a fantasticly fun series from the always brilliant Kirkman. This issue has Punisher teaming up w/ Blade.

OUTSIDERS #23

RANN THANAGAR WAR #1 - This is by far the weakest of all the Countdown books. If you aren't a DC fan, haven't been reading the amazing Adam Strange series, or don't know anything about Hawkman, you may be really lost in this comic. It is heavy dialogue & talks a LOT about the events in other comics.

USAGI YOJIMBO #83 - Maybe the greatest comic ever created.

WONDER WOMAN #216 - Rucka's run has been the best WW has been in years.

bishop2knight 05-06-05 02:55 PM

There he is. Sessa, the man with way too many books on his reading list, but also the man with some seriously good taste.

JasonF 05-06-05 03:06 PM

Does anyone know if the Englehart/Rogers Batman book is out yet, and if so whether it's any good? Dare I hope it's as good as their original run from the 1970s?

Josh-da-man 05-06-05 03:43 PM

Speaking of OMAC, did anyone read the OMAC story in Paul Pope's issue of "Solo?"

I don't think it ties in with the current "Crisis" DC is cooking up, but it's kind of a nice little Kirby tribute.

fujishig 05-06-05 04:01 PM

Man, I'm so out of the comics loop now, because:
1. I buy everything online, so I haven't been to a comic shop lately, I have to order everything in advance, and I get everything a month late. Great prices, though
2. I've almost entirely stopped buying monthly issues, going the TPB route that is either the future of the industry, or the end of the industry, depending on who you talk to...

The only non TPBs I buy regularly now are:
Fantastic Four: stopped recently after the end of the Waid/Ringo run. Love Ringo, love Waid. Is it any good now?
JSA: I loved Young All Stars and Infinity Inc., so having this series come back was such a blessing. This is one series I think would read better in collections, but I can't wait for those
Legion of Superheroes: I'm a die-hard Legion fan (even liked the Giffen reboot), and this really isn't "my" Legion. I know Waid is not only a good writer, but a Legion fan too, so I'm sticking it out. And he and Kitson did L.E.G.I.O.N., after all.
Savage Dragon: just because. I've never been a huge fan of Larsen's art or anything, but he continues to pump his baby out, and I love his letter pages and extras.
Teen Titans: Lifelong titans fan too, but if that news in the first post is true, ugh.
Transformers: now defunct, more nostalgia than anything else.

I'm tempted to pick up Invincible monthy instead of getting the TPBs, just to support it, as it seems to need it.

As the co-owner of my own store, it breaks my heart to hear people say this.

There have been 2 fill in issues since they left, they were decent, but #527 starts the what should be awesome run of J. Michael Strazynski (sp?) & the brilliant art of Mike (Teen Titans) McKone.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to support quality comics in their monthly format & NOT buy the trades. Especially a completely original totally innovative comic in a stale genre like Invicible is. And if you like letter columns, Invincible has one of the best being published, as lengthy as the Savage Dragon ones.

Jason, the book is out. Batman: Dark Detective #1. I posted a quick thought about it earlier in this thread. Too soon to say if it's as good as that 70s run.

It could be just that I haven't found a nearby store that I can call my own. But the low online prices are great... it's just that I don't have the chance to make impulse buys like I used to. Not to mention that I live in a major metropolitan area, and a lot of the local stores turn me off because they also scalp toys that they buy from local toystores.

I like McKone and JMS, but the FF as a group are not all that interesting to me. I was interested in the family dynamics Waid was going for, the old Challengers of the Unknown kind of thing, but he was getting pretty far out there even for me, and I was beginning to think the characters were behaving out of it. Plus I've loved Ringo since his early Flash issues. Not sure I'm interested enough in the title now, though.

Hmm... okay, I'm going to start buying Invincible, because it really is that good. I think the problem with a lot of comics these days, especially Marvel comics, is that they collect them really quickly (and hardcovers are dirt cheap), and most of the time, the stories seem written for collections. So why should I buy the comic monthly, when it's not as fun to read month-to-month as it is collected, and I'll end up saving all of them to read when the last one comes out? Plus I'm getting spoiled by manga.

I've also been turned off a lot by reboots, which invalidate years worth of stories at a time. For instance, when Claremont took over the X-books again a few years ago, I collected all of them. Now, his writing wasn't up to par with his old stuff (should've seen the writing on the wall with his Sovereign Seven), but a short time later, they reboot the whole X-franchise. I can't even keep up with all the crap the X-men are going through. This recent Avengers stuff had me stopping my Avengers pull, because I know they're going to collect this stuff, and if they don't, it probably wasn't worth reading anyway. This, along with the glacial pace that some of these titles move at, makes it hard for me to follow a monthly comic.

BTW, I may be a month late on this, but that first Age of Apocalypse collection was perhaps one of the most poorly conceived collections to date. Hey, lets put all the non-core, crap AoA related titles in the first collection! Ugh.

And while you're there, pick up the final issues of "Fallen Angel" and "Human Target".

It's a damn shame that two of the best new series in recent years just couldn't find enough reader despite critical acclaim and good word of mouth.

"Human Target", at least, ended with one of its best storylines. A very fitting conclusion that makes perfect sense for the book. Here's hoping that we get another miniseries somewhere down the line.

The "final" issue of "Fallen Angel" was a bit of a letdown since I don't care for the characters of Sachs and Violens. There are still a lot of unanswered questions. The good news is that another publisher seems to be very interested in continuing the series. Let's hope it works out.

Rogue588 05-07-05 09:54 PM

Isn't IDW or something like that picking up "Fallen Angel"?

lol - for some reason, none of the books mentioned on the FCBD sparked my interest so I didn't waste the gas...my comic shop guy prob held some of them for me anyway though (which would be nice).

It hasn't been made official, but they are interested. Peter David states that #20 was the last issue "for now". So things sound promising.
The biggest problem with this, other than that the book will reach an even smaller audience, is that we probably won't see another trade collecting those hard to find issues.

My city's store sucks. Little to no discount and selection is "first come, first serve". I missed issues like crazy, even when I had them on my pull list.

I never miss an issue from ordering online and the discounts are at least 35%, sometimes 50%.

I agree. I used to mail order comics from Westfield and I'm now seriously thinking of starting up again with them online. Keeping up with just the few comics I read is a pain. I go down to get this issue or that issue and it's gone already. With Westfield I would order 3 months in advance and it's all taken care of. Another beef I have with some comic shops is when they automatically up the price on anything older than a week. Suddenly a week old issue goes from $2.50 to $2.95. Not all shops do it so I call bullshit.

In what condition do you receive your books? I'm a stickler for mint comics, and I've always been a bit worried about letting some unknown punk kid handle my books and stuff them into a box.

Chew 05-09-05 10:45 AM

I'm in the process of switching between Midtowncomics and dcbservice because the discounts are sooo much better (My July order with Midtown would be $115 with biweekly shipping. While, $75 at dcbservice with weekly shipping). So, I can only say for Midtown:

Each comic is bagged, boarded and is flat with no marks or dents. I'm hardly a grader, but would call them NM. They are then put in a bag with additional cardboard surrounding, then put in a heavy cardboard box for shipping. I've never received a comic in a condition I could complain about.
