Since it's nearly convention season, is anyone planning to attend any this year.
The Motor City Comic Con is as lackluster as usual this year, so I doubt that I'll attend. I do have some friends who will be there to promote their self-published book, so I may go just for them. If I do attend, I'll probably have Peter David sign some Babylon 5 stuff. (Same with Richard Biggs, if he's not charging much.) I'll have Ron Perlman sign some Hellboy stuff. No one else of interest will be there this year.
Anyone care to share some experiences from past conventions? Which creators are nice? Which ones are jerks?
The Good Guys:
The biggest convention thrill for me was meeting Will Eisner. He was there with the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. He talked to me for about 10 minutes even though there was a line. He asked me all sorts of questions about my opinions on his work. When he saw my girlfriend snapping a picture of us, he invited me behind his table so we could get a better shot and let me stay there a chat with him for a few more minutes.
Terry Moore (Strangers in Paradise) seems like a great guy. He is genuinely appreciative of the fams that support him and wants your honest opinion of his work. He was quite surprised that I liked the "high school issues" so much because he'd recieved a lot of complaints about them. (Good thing I didn't meet him in the past year since I gave up on SiP a while ago.) He thanked me for wearing a SiP shirt to the convention and posed for pictures.
At the last convention I attended, I got to meet Geoff Johns. The line was short, but moved very slowly because he spent a while talking to everyone. When I got to him, he spent about 20 minutes talking to me, asking about my favorite characters and giving very vague hints about what to expect in JSA and The Flash. (On the subject of Black Adam:
) As I left, he called me back and pulled out a Flash poster from somewhere. He signed it and gave it to me.
I met Peter Gross (now artist for Lucifer, but wrote and did art for Books Of Magic at the time) almost by accident. I didn't know he was at the con, but I had a few issues of BoM on me that I wanted cover artist William Kaluta to sign. There was no one in his line, and he looked pretty bored. I had him sign my books (even though I was no longer too crazy about the book, I was still collecting it out of habit.), but then I had trouble getting away. He wouldn't stop talking to me! Luckily, my friends were ready to leave and were able to drag me away.
Other Good Guys: James Robinson, Jill Thompson, Greg Hyland
The Jerks:
James O'Barr - You weren't even allowed to approach him. You had to stand about a yard away from the table. Someone would take your book from you, have O'Barr sign it, and then bring it back. He would not talk to anyone. He didn't even seem to want to make eye contact with his fans! (Of course, this was a while back. Everytime I've seem him since, he's been the loneliest guy at the convention, stuck at a small table with no one in line to see him.
Tony Harris - I've heard other stories about him being a nice guy, so maybe I just caught him on a bad day. He signed my books, but wouldn't reall speak...just nodded his head a few times....even ignored me and talked to the guy sitting with him. (They were making fun of people walking by.) When I asked how much he was charging for his Starman art. he told me, "You probably can't afford it", and went back to chatting with his friend.

I went to the Pittsburgh con this weekend. Pretty cool con lot's of artists and celebs but not a huge turnout. Oh well I stocked up on art and had a good time so that's all that matters. Looking foraward to Wizard World Philly in a few weeks.

I was wondering if anyone was going to San Diego Comic Con (July 22-25) or Wizard World Chicago (August 13-15), and would be willing to pick me up one of those exclusive Crazy 88 Quentin Tarantino figures? I will gladly pay cost + a nominal fee + shipping.

I told him that the book really meant a lot to me as a teen, and didn't really pour my heart out, but I rambled a bit maybe.
His response: "Uh huh."
