This Week's Comics -- 02.18.2004

Fantastic Four 510

Haven't read this issue yet, but when we left 'em last issue they were on their way to "Heaven" to recover Ben's "soul".

I'm just glad that Waid/Wieringo are back.

New X-Men 153

It's funny. I would consider myself a fan of Grant's, but as I mentioned in another comics thread, his run on the X-men has been very underwhelming.

I could say the same for Silvestri's artwork.

Uncanny X-Men 440

Initially, I didn't like what Austen was doing on this book. The whole "Nightcrawler" storyline was flat. The same could be said for THIS story which is yet ANOTHER variation on the "Romeo & Juliet" theme. Throw in some racial prejudice as well as the typical mutant prejudice and voila! You too can write an X book!

Salva's art, however, elevates this book. It's simply gorgeous.

Gotham Knights 50

Haven't read this yet, but Hush is back and there's a new team taking over...

Outsiders 9

I like this book. I like the characters. I like Raney's art. The only problem I have with it, is that I seem to breeze through it quickly and it leaves me wanting more.

Kinda like chinese food.

Superman/Batman 6

A weak ending to what's been a great story. I'm going to miss McGuinness' artwork.

Robin 123

So...Bill Willingham is the darling of the Vertigo Universe with "Fables"?

Well, apparently, he's left his creativity over there since none of it is apparent here. I've been following Bill since his "art ******" days on Elementals. Perhaps he needs to start drawing again? Perhaps he's just getting a feel for the character?

...i'm willing to give him time.

Grrl Scouts: Work Sucks

Like Mahfood.

Don't like trade paperbacks.

However, due to a problem with Diamond [surprise, surprise], my comic book store owner was unable to get me the original mini.

Ya'll should check out his "Stupid Comics" and "40oz.
Comic" trade too..

Aspen Sketchbook 1

I realize Mike's recently conquered cancer.

I also realize he's just resolved a court case with Top Cow.

I'm hoping he gets this company in order and it doesn't turn out to be another Image

What I bought...

Daredevil 57, easily the best book of the week. I can't get enough of the Bendis/Maleev combo and I'm digging the idea as Daredevil running Hell's Kitchen.

Pulse 1, yay more Bendis. Decent start but lacks the edge of Alias

New X Men 153, I don't see how the next issue is going to tie all of this up.

Uncanny X Men 440, love the art, hate the story.

Exiles 43, I can't help but like this book. Some storylines are hit and miss. This one looks good.

Electra 33, If I knew how to drop titles that I read, this would be the first.

Here is what I got out of the books you posted Rogue. The current Uncanny arc has been one of the biggest pieces of poop I've ever read in a comic in my life. And New X-men has ended on the worste story-arc of Morrison's run IMO 7 Silvestri's art has been horrendous. Haven't read Supes/Bats yet but I've been diggin' the hell out of that book, so I'm sure the conclusion to the first story-arc will be good. I dig get the Aspen Sketchbook as I worship Turner. I dig him WAYYYYY more than Lee. You'll be happy to know that the first actually issue Soulfire #0 is finally solicated in next weeks Previews.

The stuff worth checking out from this week IMO is . . .

Abadazad #1 - Wow did this comic take me by surprise. I hate Crossgen, mostly b/c all of their comics look exactly the same. Not this title. Amazing art by Plook, & a very creative & well written story by the always intelligent J. M. DeMatteis. Look for this to be a huge sleeper hit & be sold out very fast. The critical buzz on the book has been astounding, this book literally has the making to become modern classic.

The Goon #5 - The single most creative, original, & innovative comic being published today. You are missing out on something truly amazing in comic if you are not reading this comic.

The New Frontier #2 - Already the best mini-series of early 2004 by my favorite creator in comics Darwyn Cook. Truly brilliant sequential story telling, something you really don't see in most comics as well as a book with tremendous heart.

Adventures of Superman #625 - The story that's getting me back into Superman, as I'm sure many others, after years of not reading any Supers comics.

Don't worry, Marvel will do it for you. Elektra is cancelled, issue #36 is the last issue. Glad to see someone new post about comics, hope you stick around.

This was a big week for me:

Adventures of Superman #625
Coup Detat #3
Daredevil #57
DC The New Frontier #2
DEMO #4
Fantastic Four #510
The Goon #5
Human Target #7
Lucifer #47
New X-Men #153
The Pulse #1
Runaways #12

The only thing that wasn't very good was New X-Men #153. Morrison's final arc has been surprisingly lame.

I haven't EVER read Superman, but I decided to give it a go starting with the Majestic arc last month and I enjoyed it as well as Godfall so far.

Anyone read the previous Goon minis? How do they compare to the current series?

Waid is doing excellent work on Fantastic Four.

ETA: I went to my LCS and picked up a copy of Abadazad.

well I went crazy this week on buying comics becuase one of the LCS's (Million Comix) is having a huge sale on back issues 40-60% off with the more you buy the more you save. I bought close to 30 comics from there in the past 2 days.

Yesterday

Supreme power 1, 3-6

Hulk Vol 3 44, 46-48 55-60

Superman Batman 3, 5, 6 (6 was new and not on sale)

Amazing Spiderman 64 ( I would say Fine, the main thing is that the cover looks undamaged)

Fables 9, 10

Y the last man 2 (NM)

Batman 312 (VG/F range)

I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting a couple of other books. But I ended up paying a little over 40$ for it all instead of $95 it would have been.

Today I went back up there and bought

Amazing Spiderman 55, ( it is missing a chunk of the lower right corner on the cover, but it was 1.50)

AMS 67 (VG/F range)

Fantastic Four (75, and 86) (VG/F I love the cover on 86)

This batch was under 20$.

I by my new books at a different store, because after so many you get one free.

Abadazaad 1 (Great read, well worth getting)

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang 2 (got it free)

4 #1 (even though the preview in wizard was the whole comic)

back issues found on rack

Teen Titans 3

Superman Batman 4

Rose and Thorn 1

Alright, Sessa, I'm taking another of your recommends and trying out "The Goon".

Midtown Comics has issues 2-5 for $2.54 each. (I got an email from Mile High saying they were having a 40% off back-issues sale on Independents. Midtown is still cheaper!)

If anybody has a not-too-expensive and available option for #1, let me know.

I already have Abadazad heading my way.

GOON #5: Bad ass even for someone who's never read the book (like me).

BIRDS OF PREY #63: Is it just me, or is the Simone/Benes combo pretty much perfect?

THE PULSE #1: I hope there's some sort of action in #2.

NEW X-MEN #153: Huh?

Haven't read: New Frontier #2, Rose and Thorn #3, Abadazad #1, or Daredevil #57.

Thanks for the welcome! I just stumbled onto this part of dvdtalk today.

I guess I am glad that this is being canceled, but isn't there supposed to be an Elektra movie in the works? So I'm sure there will be a future relaunch.

Haven't gotten Pulse yet. But, I have to admit, I think Bendis is severly overrated. I have no problem saying that he does do some good stuff, but I don't think he walks on water like some forums/publications will try to lead you to believe. I dropped DD a while back, picked up the most recent Mack run, and will probably check out what Quesada has planned for him.

As for Elektra...I cut her off a few issues ago. Perhaps I should've stuck with it since, as Sessa17 pointed out, they're cancelling it. But, like pezsoup said, i'm sure they'll relaunch it with an all new FIRST issue around the time the flick comes out.

Oh, and that Gotham Knights 50? Lame. I think they're trying to build Hush up as a "Bane"-like adversary and it fails miserably. And the art isn't even that good.

That's nothing. A couple weekends ago my comic store had a great back-issue sale. All issues (except for this week's releases and wall comics) were $1. I already had most of what I wanted, but I did end up getting JLA/Avengers 1, 2, and 3 for $1 each.
