Comics of 2/11/04 Secret War!!

Marvel put out several interesting comics this week, but I started this thread mainly to promote Secret War. I can't believe this miniseries isn't getting more attention. Marvel's biggest writer coupled with an amazing new artist covering years of Marvel continuity. Don't let the continuity scare you away though. Anybody can enjoy this. Here's a look at some of the art:

Marvel also released 2 new #1's, but I didn't pick up either of them. One of them, Epic Anthology, might not have another issue. Apparently Marvel's second attempt at an Epic line didn't turn out so well. But you better pick this up if you want to see more like it.

The other is another Fantastic Four series. I don't know too much about it, but I think it might be trying to take more of a sitcom approach to the series.

This week also marks the end of a Marvel series, Sentinel. But in April, the first tpb is solicited and if enough people buy it, the series might continue in tpb only format. It'll be a great deal at only $7.95 for the first 6 issues.

Last, but not least, Ultimate Dazzler makes her debut in Ultimate X-men. You'd hate to miss that, wouldn't you?

Personally, I thought SECRET WAR was weak. I loved the art. But the story left me wanting more. I have a feeling issue 2 will be better, but after #1, who knows.

Good post nny.

I am probably alone but the only new Marvel book that came out yesterday that had me excited was the new Thor. IMO the only quality title Marvel published right now except for Runaways. And the BEST thing Marvel put out yesterday was the new Thor: Vikings TPB.

The first issue of 4 had to be one of the worste things I've read in a long time along with this being the single most uncalled for series in recent years. The story was so dumb I actually felt brain cells die as I read it.

What little interest I had in Secret Wars was killed with the first issue. I can't stand Marvel's lack of originality & new ideas, just going back to the well yet again of a classic story in hopes of gaining sales on people only buying the book b/c it's called "Secret Wars". The book was very boring and well, typical IMO.

There were some great comics that did come out yesterday.

Ant #1 - A very surprising new indy book, for a bit of a different take on the hero genre. Look for this to be a hit as it's already sold out by the distributor.

Aquaman #15 - An excellent jumping on point & new direction for anyone that is even slightly interested in getting into Aquaman. Look for my review of it over at http://brokenfrontier.com

And there were 2 MUST OWN trades that should be in every comic book fans reading pile. . ..

The Losers: Ante Up - A kick ass new Vertigo title that is not getting nearly the credit it deserves. Any fans of Tarantino like dialogue & the espionage genre should really be reading this.

Thor: Vikings - Marvel Max

This many series was just AWESOME. Thor taking on an army of endead Norse zombies. What more do you need than that. With perfect realistic pencils by Glen Fabry. This is a VERY gory book written by a master of gore, Garth Ennis.

I'm with Sessa. The stuff coming out of Marvel these days is so unoriginal. I'll admit, I buy certain titles, but mostly because I love the characters, not necessarily the writing or the stories.

I can't fault Marvel for putting out more FF titles, or adding yet another Spider-Man title (in April). It sales, and they are in business to make money. But I recently noticed that my purchases are roughly 80% DC. Which is a huge turn around from when I was a kid and read closer to 90% Marvel.

I wouldn't say Marvel is putting out garbage. It just seems that DC and the Indies are the only ones putting out fresh, well written, original tales.

By the way, I'm glad to see the comic talk back on the forum.

What I have bought in the past 2 days:

Ant 1: Only found 1 copy in 2 different shops. Great read.

Fables 22: Haven't read yet

Chosen 1: Great read.

back issues

Fables 1: Paid a lot for.

Alias 3: Found it burried on the rack and got it for cover price

Supreme Power 2: Same as alias.

I just picked up this one today:

How is the Sentinels series? I've always been kinda interested in those characters. Are the original sentinels in any TPBs (aside from Essential Xmen)?

BTW -- if you don't pick this up next week....well, there's just no hope for you I'm sad to say:

Even better, 32 pages of story and art -- ad-free for the normal price.

and #7 this summer features Hellboy as a guest star with art and story by Mignola as well!

This isn't directly related to this weeks new batch of comics, but does anyone know when the final issue of Bone comes out?

Thanks.

I know the HC of vol 9 has already been solicited. TPB to be solicited soon.

from the official site -- www.boneville.com -- you can preorder the last 2 issues. #54 is Feb., #55 is April. Both are 48 pages for the normal $2.95 price.

Tough decision on a lot of books now. I used to buy all single issues as well as TPBs. Now I pretty much just buy the TPBs. Hard to justify buying stuff twice (other than for the sake of completion -- ie. my goon collection, or Planetary or a few other items). If I did it for everything it'd just be a bit much. Maybe eventually with a bit more income.

Ant sounds cool, I'll have to hit a few shops tomorrow to see if I can find one...tho I kinda doubt it, as I went to two shops today (the only ones around here) and couldn't find any Dead@17 issues...<sigh>.

Thanks for the info! I'm torn between buying all the issues after the 8th tpb or just waiting for the 9th one.

For those looking for Dead@17 issues, you will not find them at any comic book stores. They were sold out by Diamond since the first issue. Go to vipercomics.com & you can directly the first 3 issues of the mini-series there. Give them an email & tell them Glen from Adventure Planet recommended you & you may even get them quicker with some goodies thrown in Trust me, the book will not dissapoint you & is well worth ordering.

Sessa, I was actually there the other day and noticed shipping is $8 for 3 issues. That seems....high.

But even with the shipping, is the purchase worth it?

I was just talking to Jessie, the guy that runs Viper comics & he said it's a mistake & will be fixed soon. If you send him an email, he will probably personally send out your books for you. Like I said, just say that "Glen from Adventure Planet comic book store" recommended the book/website to you.

Thanks for the tip on Dead@17 Sessa!

I actually bought a lot off eBay for roughly the same price before I checked back here, tho had I read your post first, I would've thrown by business direct from the company.

I found a copy of Ant as well, can't wait to dig into it soon. I finished up Thor: Vikings and thought it was pretty good. I bought #1 when it came out, but figured I'd wait for the TPB as the cost was a bit steep ($3.50 an issue!).

To touch on earlier posts, I thought Secret War #1 was great...though if I hadn't had credit, I probably wouldn't have picked it up. 3 months between issues is a long time to wait.

As much as I love Sentinel and hate to see it go, I'm not to fond of the idea of continuing it in digest sized TPBs. I'm not a fan of the format.

As for 4 #1, I read the issue in Wizard and the plot seems quite similar to what's going on in the reg. Fantastic Four series, so I took a pass. I'm not the biggest fan of the characters, and between FF and Ult FF, I've got my fill.

And Dead @ 17 should be orderable from Diamond, right?

Good to see you posting again LD, someone who reads as many comics as I

The final issue, #4 I think is solicited in next months Previews, I don't remember.

And the next mini-series was just announced & should be solicited soon through Diamond.

You guys that are picking up Dead@17 soon, post somewhere here & let me know what you think. I'll feel a little bad if you guys don't like it, but the first issue impressed as much as any first issue of a comic I ever read, so I'm pretty confident you all will dig it.

How much did everyone get shipping for Dead @ 17? I went back and it's still $8 for four issues.

Sorry for the confusion on the shipping....but if your ordering multiple copies it's best to use the multiple copy button...shipping will be cheaper...
