Pretty sure they'll be glued in just as the hardcovers were. But being paperback, these should be much easier to thumb through and read on the can.

Yeah, I really like my hardcovers, but I think I would have preferred this version for actual use.

I like my hard cover collection as well however it is a bit easier reading the older hardcover editions which I still have for some reason.

I don't know that I've ever seen a sewn bound paperback book. These are probably straight cut and glued like just about every paperback ever. Glued binding is generally serviceable but not as good as sewn binding on a hardcover.
I've heard plenty of people say they've had pages fall out of the hardcover editions.

Are these all in black and white, or are the Sunday strips in colour ?

My kid is a big Peanuts fan so I suggested she read Calvin & Hobbes. She thought it was OK but didn't like how the strips were standalone rather than in arcs.

I definitely remember there being arcs in Calvin & Hobbes. Are you sure you're not talking about the Family Circus?

Re: Calvin & Hobbes Books [incl. Complete] merged

Early on Calvin and Hobbes had a lot of story arcs. Monsters under the bed, Spaceman spiff, Snowmonsters are some examples.

But I noticed later on there were less story arcs, or atleast good ones. The only one I can remember from the strips later years was when Calvin had to make a sign for school.

In the hardcover, I remember the strips being in color and the dailies being black and white. I would expect this would be the same.

I didn't buy it, though, because the open copy in the store was falling apart due to the bad binding and I didn't want to spend $100+ on it.

I am definitely considering this since I don't have the HC. Just waiting on the reviews.

Re: Calvin & Hobbes Books [incl. Complete] merged

Just received my paperback copy and I can say that I will definitely read it more than my hardcover version. This version does have a glue binding which has the potential to get worse over time especially if you leave the book open and put a lot of pressure on the pages. The good news though is that since it is divided into four volumes, instead of two in the hardcover, each volume is around 350 pages and easy to pick up and read. The Sunday strip is in color while the weeklies are black and white. The paper quality is average for a paperback and the slipcase is pretty nice as well. For those that don't have the hardcover I would recommend this for any fan of the series.

Stupid question maybe, but in the HC version, are all of them in color or just the Sunday ones as well?

The strips that appeared in color are in color and the daily black and whites are black and white.

Re: Calvin & Hobbes Books [incl. Complete] merged

Addendum... Comparing both versions back to back (the hardcover was still in storage in a box from the move) the paperback is literally only an inch shorter and 3/4 inch less wide than the hardcover. The background coloration is orange versus a deeper red orange, the paper quality is actually not that much inferiori to the hardcover, the ink lines and black colors have a glossy sheen to them exactly like the hardcover version. It may seem like the little brother to the hardcover, but it is not a cheap cash grab with the caveat of the glue binding.

Edit: Costco has this version for $59.99 right now.

I believe she read this volume because that's the one that was handy at the time. I do have the big set and various other PBs. Don't know offhand whether there are arcs in it but I would guess it's the first PB.

I watched the price of that hardcover for six months, and the price never dropped below $90. So I pulled the trigger a couple weeks ago. Then, this morning, it was $50. Grr.

Re: Calvin & Hobbes Books [incl. Complete] merged

Picked up the softcover version in store yesterday with the 30% off coupon. $37.10 including tax. The bindings and covers seem like they'll stand up to gentle reading.

Thanks for the heads up!
